Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) With natural sadness but also with Paschal hope the Philadelphia Archeparchy bids farewell to Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk. As a priest and bishop,he was a dedicated minister of the Lord in the Archeparchy for 65 years since his priestly ordination in 1955. We thank God for his life and raise prayers of gratitude for his service. The coronavirus pandemic, to which evidently the Archbishop succumbed at the age of 95, does not allow us to come together for the funeral. Thus, we are called to unite in prayer and spirit from our homes. When the danger for our clergy and faithful passes we will celebrate a requiem in which all can participate. In the name of our deceased Metropolitan, I thank all the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful that worked with him over the many decades of his service in America. He is grateful to all of you, as he himself expressed during the joyful, warm celebration of his 95th birthday in October held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He appreciated the collegiality shown by Roman Catholic bishops, clergy and communities, as well as the fellowship shared with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. He valued the decades of cooperation with various community organizations. We are most grateful for the services and kindnesses rendered to the Metropolitan by Ukrainian and Roman Catholic chaplains, religious, and laypersons during the two decades of his retirement. Especially I would like to thank Carol and Michael Nunno for the genuine friendship and singular service that you offered to Archbishop Stephen.

The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops.

  • To Lead by Listening to the Lord and My Brothers and Sisters Interview with Bishop Borys Gudziak
To lead by listening to the Lord and my brothers and sisters Interview with Bishop Borys Gudziak On February 18, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis, accepting the recommendation of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), has appointed Bishop Borys Gudziak as Metropolitan and Archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. For the previous six years Bishop Borys was eparch of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr in Paris, serving the Ukrainian Greek Catholic faithful in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. We asked him to describe his reactions to the nomination, summarize the years of his service in the Paris Eparchy, and articulate his hopes and dreams for a new mission in the land of his birth. What was your reaction to the decision of the Synod and of the Holy Father nominating you to the Philadelphia Archeparchy? Allow me to be open with you. The nomination—and everything that it entails—provokes deep thoughts and sentiments. The first is gratitude and first to God. As I —hopefully—mature as a human being I am increasingly drawn by the mystery of our God in Three Persons. This may be daring—but Iwant to be in the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit… My central belief is that the Son came into this breathtaking yet often frail human race to be with me and you, even in death, to bring us home to the Father. The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus and our salvation in Christ for me are ever more awesome and inspiring… The guidance and comfort of the Holy Spirit give me more hope and joy.

  • Pope Will Visit Ukrainian Catholic Basilica
Pope will visit Ukrainian Catholic basilica Pope Francis will visit the main church of Italy’s Ukrainian Catholic community in late January, showing his continued concern over the war in Eastern Ukraine and his closeness to the tens of thousands of Ukrainian immigrants living and working in Italy, the head of the church said. Ukrainian Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, major archbishop Kiev-Halych and head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, said the pope’s Jan. 28 visit is “a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who are suffering the effects of the war” and “a manifestation of the pope’s closeness to Ukrainian migrants in Italy.” Ukraine’s battle against Kremlin-backed separatists has been ongoing for nearly four years since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014. The pope’s plan for an afternoon visit to the Ukrainian Basilica of St. Sophia in Rome was announced by the Vatican Jan. 12. The late Cardinal Josyf Slipyj began collecting funds for the construction of the church in 1963 after arriving in Rome following 18 years of imprisonment in a Siberian gulag. The cardinal died in 1984, and his remains were kept at the basilica until 1992, when Ukraine regained its independence and the church was able to take the cardinal’s body home. During his visit to the church, Pope Francis will go to the crypt to pray at the tomb of Bishop Stefan Chmil, according to information released by the major archbishop’s office in Rome. In 1948, then-Father Chmil became the first Ukrainian Salesian to minister in Argentina.
