20 17/18 ANNUAL REPORT ADVANCEMENT New School of Health Professions, p. 6 SCOPE, p. 10 Alumni Stories, p. 20 YOUR PARTICIPATION COUNTS

Your participation matters. As you volunteer, engage with BJU on our website or social media, attend an event or give a financial gift, your participation is having an influence. And that influence means a great deal.

Annual giving is important. With the financial participation of our alumni and friends, student scholarships are funded, educational programs grow, and special initiatives are strengthened as we build momentum for the future. Your participation enables BJU to continue to provide a first-class education and directly influences the work graduates will accomplish throughout their lifetimes.

I am pleased to announce that our alumni’s financial participation during last fiscal year (2017-2018) surpassed the participation goal and set an historic high for BJU! Ten percent was an achievable goal—but you blew us away by joining in support of BJU at a new level of 12.8%!

Regular alumni participation plays a valuable role in college rankings—and your increased giving participation contributed to BJU’s increase in rankings with U.S. News & World Report. This year our rankings improved substantially to #4 Best Value Regional University in the South (up from #7) and #34 overall (up from #61)!

We are excited to continue this forward momentum and push for a 15% alumni giving participation goal this year. It takes us all working together—and we know we couldn’t effectively accomplish our mission without you. Participation truly matters, and we have seen it change lives this year.

In the following pages you will see how God has been working at BJU. You’ll read about new programs, be inspired by student successes and moved by alumni testimonies. There is much to celebrate—to God be the glory!

ANNUAL REPORT | 9 SCOPESCOPESCOPE

BJU relocated its staff for the School of Continuing, Online and Professional Education to the University Center Greenville in September 2018.

10 | BOB JONES UNIVERSITY NEW ONLINE OPTIONS FOR ADULTS

BJU’s School of Continuing, Online and Professional Education (SCOPE) primarily serves the non-traditional student 25 or older who wants to complete a degree or participate in certificate programs that better prepare them for employment. In fiscal year 2018, SCOPE programs showed a 20 percent growth in revenue, and we anticipate another 20 percent this coming year—both in revenue and enrollment!

A key offering is our RN to BSN program which launched fall 2018. Many health care facilities are requiring the BSN degree, increasing interest around the country.

MA in Sport Administration and Coaching is also SCOPESCOPE a new program with SCOPE. SCOPE We have plans to develop both credit and non-credit certificate programs in areas such as healthcare, technology, project management and education as well as degree completion programs for students who have some college credit but not a college degree. These are all in addition to our online masters degrees already in place which are experiencing substantial growth.

In fall 2018 we announced our membership in University Center Greenville, which focuses on providing degrees from accredited universities in fields aligned with upstate South Carolina’s job market. We will join Anderson University, Clemson University, Converse College, Furman University, Greenville Technical College, University of South Carolina and USC Upstate in meeting adult education needs. There are over 64,000 residents 25 or older in Greenville County with some college but no degree.

The potential for BJU is substantial!

bruins foundation welcomes tim tebow

On March 15, 2018, a crowd of 3,800 people made their way to Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium to hear Tim Tebow. Community members brought their unsaved friends; and BJU faculty, staff, students, alumni, booster club members and guests eagerly arrived to hear Tim Tebow share his testimony and describe how God is enabling him to use sports as a platform for Gospel ministry.

Steve Pettit and Athletic Director Neal Ring also presented the role of sports in BJU’s mission and our philosophy of sports as a vehicle to enable athletes to proclaim Christ.

After Tim’s moving personal BJU ATHLETICS EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD BY: testimony and emphasis on his Gospel witness on the mission field and in professional football and baseball, he gave an invitation— PURSUING PROVIDING and several dozen raised their COMPETITIVE MINISTRY hands to receive Christ! The culmination of this week was a new tradition of giving by the 2018 senior class. This year seniors fundraised for the BJU Together Fund. Their goal was to beat 67% participation, set by the University of South Carolina’s senior class in their first year of revitalized class fundraising (2008).

Our senior class representatives led the way and set their class goal at 68% participation—and President Steve Pettit challenged them to meet that goal with a $2,018 pledge to the BJU Together Fund in their honor if they accomplished it.

The class met their goal! 68.08% of the senior class gave to the BJU Together Fund. A tradition of “class bricks” to commemorate annual senior class giving was started in front of FMA. These bricks will mark the entrance to the commencement walk for years to come as each class leaves their mark and gives to the legacy of BJU.

18 | BOB JONES UNIVERSITY BRIDGE SCHOLARS UPDATE

Last year a brand new scholarship for American minorities was initiated at BJU.

Many talented, God-loving minority students across the United States desire a BJU education but face staggering odds. Without extra help, they have no way to afford college.

Through the Bridge Scholars Program, these students receive additional funding to bridge the gap between institutional/ federal/state scholarships and grants and their remaining need. In the fall and spring of the 2017-18 academic year, 30 “My mom spent a little time in college but she eventually students were able to benefit dropped out, and my dad didn’t (attend college). ANNUAL REPORT | 19 ALUMNI STORIES

Bob Jones University prepared me to lead a biblical life—and also a Spirit-led life. A Spirit-led life is a life that is led in any job that you take—whether it’s in law enforcement, or farming, or working with dogs. Whatever job you take should be used of God. I’ve had 25 years in law enforcement, and 10 of those were in the canine unit. When I first got into law enforcement, I thought I was going to be witnessing more to the drunks, prostitutes and down-and-outers. Then I realized my co-workers were watching me—and they were my ministry field.

Because we serve a King, there is dignity to any task that the King calls you to do. It’s about doing what God has called you to do to the best of your ability every day. I’m a collaborative piano fellow at the Yale School of Music. I’m a performer, so I perform in front of an audience. But really, I’m performing in front of an audience of One—and that’s God. And He is a God of beauty; and as someone created in His image, it’s my duty but also my privilege as a musician to show just a small portion of the beauty that God has created through my performing.

“Membership in the BJU Heritage Society is a source of joy. In my student years, Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. sometimes spoke in chapel. As a loving grandfather, he would say, “The measure of your opportunity is the measure of your responsibility.” Several decades later that saying became the catalyst I needed to begin regular donations to BJU. Since then I have given reg- ularly. When I drew up my will, I designated BJU as a beneficiary. My prayer is that my gifts enable young women and men to attend Bob Jones University and stay in school without concern for lack of finances.” –SM, 1964 grad

President’s Society members sustain the mission of BJU through annual gifts of $1,000 or more. Members are critical in helping to provide educational excellence and a quality experience for students. Our President’s Society membership has increased to 567—and members’ names are listed in the donor section of this publication. When you partner with BJU, your gifts will count for eternity!

“We have been giving to the ministries of BJU for several years, but recently we saw the importance of giving at a higher level. BJU’s recent tax exemption was a motivator, but seeing the difference a Christ-centered, liberal arts education makes in the lives of students and the direction of their lives is something we wanted to have a greater part in. We feel like we’re making a difference for eternity!” –TST, 1981 grad

“When I was working on my degrees, I saw the Lord work in many unexpected ways to put food on my table and gas in my car as well as pay my bills. My faith grew by leaps and bounds. I want the students at BJU not only to know that God cares for them but also to experience God’s provision for every need laid at His feet. I am honored to be a small part of that caring and provision.” –BJU faculty member

ANNUAL REPORT | 25 Our 2018 Bible Conference offering raised money to help Camp Impact in Germany. A former communist youth facility, Camp Impact is now a revival center providing biblical teaching and encouraging fellowship among European Christians, especially teens. The offering supported the renovation of a building to house campers year-round.

This student-based fundraising effort raised over $136,000 for this missions ministry, run by BJU graduate Kevin Matthia. Students sold doughnuts, burgers, cinnamon rolls and Oreo balls—and they played in volleyball, Frisbee, indoor soccer and BIBLE CONFERENCE 2018 dodge ball tournaments to help raise funds to give as an offering.

We’re thrilled that our students have a heart for ministry and rallied around a BJU graduate in this successful fundraiser!
