EUR Kastrup Airport The Middelgrunden Wind Farm is situated a few kilometres away from the centre of Copenhagen. The offshore turbines are connected by cable to the transformer at the Amager power plant 3.5 km away. Kongedybet Hollænderdybet Middelgrunden Saltholm Flak 2 From Idea to Reality The idea of the Middelgrunden wind project was born in a group of visionary people in Copenhagen already in 1993. However it took seven years and a lot of work before the first cooperatively owned offshore wind farm became a reality. Today the 40 MW wind farm with twenty modern 2 MW wind turbines developed by the Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative and Copenhagen Energy Wind is producing electricity for more than 40,000 households in Copenhagen. In 1996 the local association Copenhagen Environment and Energy Office took the initiative of forming a working group for placing turbines on the Middelgrunden shoal and a proposal with 27 turbines was presented to the public. At that time the Danish Energy Authority had mapped the Middelgrunden shoal as a potential site for wind development, but it was not given high priority by the civil servants and the power utility. -

Nu vågner befæstningsringen til live som en sammen- hængende oplevelse, der bringer kultur- og naturoplevelser sammen i historiske rammer. Fæstningsværket er blandt de bedst bevarede forsvarsanlæg i Europa. Det består af en lang række forter og forsvarsstillinger, et oversvømmelsesanlæg og den godt 14 km lange Vestvold. Hovedparten af Befæstningen blev opført mellem 1885 og 1894, som reaktion på Danmarks sviende nederlag til tyskerne i 1864. Under 1. Ver- denskrig var forsvarsværket bemandet med næsten 50.000 soldater, men da krigen var slut, havde den teknologiske udvikling overhalet de mange forter og batterier, hvorfor hele Befæstningen blev nedlagt som beskyttelse af København. Fra overlevelse til oplevelse Nu genopstår Københavns Befæstning som en sammenhængende helhed, der for ener et stykke danmarkshistorie med enestående kultur- og naturoplevelser. Bygningsværker og naturarealer er blevet revitaliseret, så du kan gå på opdagelse på en lang række forter og anlæg i hele befæstningsringen. VAN LAER Archivist, Archives and History Division ALBANY THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK I 935 PREFACE In the preface to the Correspondence of Jeremias van Rens selaer, which was piiblished in 1932, attention was called to the fact that after the death of Jeremias van Rensselaer his widow carried on a regular correspondence with her husband's youngest brother, Richard van Rensselaer, in regard to the administration of the colony of Rensselaerswyck, and the plan was announced to publish this correspondence in another volume. This plan has been carried into effect in the present volume, which contains translations of all that has been preserved of the correspondence of Maria van Rensselaer, including besides the correspondence with her brother-in-law many letters which passed between her and her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt and other members of the Van Cortlandt family. Maria van Rensselaer was born at New York on July 20, 1645, and was the third child of Oloff Stevensen van Cortlandt and his wife Anna Loockermans. She married on July 12, 1662, when not quite 17 years of age, Jeremias van Rensselaer, who in 1658 had succeeded his brother Jan Baptist van Rensse laer as director of the colony of Rensselaerswyck. By him she had four sons and two daughters, her youngest son, Jeremias, being born shortly after her husband's death, which occurred on October 12, 1674. As at the time there was no one available who could succeed Jeremias van Rensselaer as director of the colony, the burden of its administration fell temporarily upon his widow, who in this emergency sought the advice of her brother Stephanus van Cortlandt.
