In 1989, John Paul II delivered an (a special document or letter) named Redemptoris Cus- tos (Guardian of the Redeemer) on the occasion of the centenary of Pope Leo XIII's dedicated to St. Joseph. In Redemptoris Custos, Pope John Paul II discusses the importance of Saint Jo- seph in the , his role in the plan of redemption, and portrays the saint as a model of a loving father. At the end of the document, Pope John Paul II states that today we still have good reason to commend everyone to St. Joseph, and to ask for his intercession: "Most beloved father, dispel the evil of falsehood and sin...graciously assist us from heaven in our struggle with the powers of dark- ness...and just as once you saved the Child Jesus from mortal danger, so now de- fend God's holy Church from the snares of her enemies and from all adversity." IV WORK AS AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE 23. In the human growth of Jesus "in wisdom, age and grace," the virtue of industriousness 22. Work was the daily expression of love in played a notable role, since "work is a human the life of the Family of Nazareth. The Gospel good" which "transforms nature" and makes specifies the kind of work Joseph did in order man "in a sense, more human." to support his family: he was a carpenter. This simple word sums up Joseph's entire life. For The importance of work in human life demands Jesus, these were hidden years, the years to that its meaning be known and assimilated in which Luke refers after recounting the episode order to "help all people to come closer to God, that occurred in the Temple: "And he went the Creator and Redeemer, to participate in his down with them and came to Nazareth, and salvific plan for man and the world, and to was obedient to them" (Lk 2:51). This deepen...friendship with Christ in their lives, by "submission" or obedience of Jesus in the accepting, through faith, a living participation house of Nazareth should be understood as a in his threefold mission as Priest, Prophet and sharing in the work of Joseph. Having learned King." the work of his presumed father, he was known 24. What is crucially important here is the as "the carpenter's son." If the Family of sanctification of daily life, a sanctification Nazareth is an example and model for human which each person must acquire according to families, in the order of salvation and holiness, his or her own state, and one which can be so too, by analogy, is Jesus' work at the side of promoted according to a model accessible to all Joseph the carpenter. In our own day, the people: "St. Joseph is the model of those Church has emphasized this by instituting the humble ones that Christianity raises up to great liturgical memorial of St. Joseph the Worker on destinies;...he is the proof that in order to be a May 1. Human work, and especially manual good and genuine follower of Christ, there is labor, receive special prominence in the no need of great things-it is enough to have the Gospel. Along with the humanity of the Son of common, simple and human virtues, but they God, work too has been taken up in the need to be true and authentic." mystery of the Incarnation, and has also been redeemed in a special way. At the workbench [To be continued…] where he plied his trade together with Jesus, [May St. Joseph obtain for the Church and for the Joseph brought human work closer to the world, as well as for each of us, the blessing of the mystery of the Redemption. Not shown in any of the photos are Letty Dino and Maureen Finn.

Everyone received take home prizes from a table selection of household utensils, scented candles, and masks, prepared by the Executive Board. Everyone snacked on individually wrapped cookies, cheeses and grapes. Another surprise bonus for everyone was a Jar of Hope. Called that because Letty Dino said, “you hope something flowery and springy will sprout from this jar to brighten your day. Just put it on a sunny side of your house, water it occasionally and hopefully you will be rewarded with a spring bloom.” On that note, by 7:30 PM, everyone packed up and the meeting ended with happy feelings. There will be no CCW meeting on April 1, because it is Holy Thursday.

Lenten Regulations Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not consider themselves bound by these norms. Lenten Resources

You may have heard about the Corporal Works of Mercy, but do you know what they are? At their core, they are acts of love. This is God’s love in action, a love of recognizing and helping our neighbor in their physical needs. The Corporal Works of Mercy are: give alms to the poor, feed the hungry, offer drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. How can you incorporate at least one Corporal Work of Mercy into your life and into the life of someone in need?

Donate urgent food needs and items to DuPage Pads (Public Action to Deliver Shelter for the Homeless) https://dupagepads.org/ and https://dupagepads.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Donation-Needs-Covid-19-1-28-21.pdf

For 800 years, the Holy Land Franciscans have served in the land made holy by the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. With your support, the Holy Land Francis- cans will continue to nourish Christians in the Holy Land with presence, care and service

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write to you with deep gratitude for your support of last year’s Pontifical Good Friday Collection. Due to the pandemic, the Holy See postponed the Collection until September 2020. Your generosity allowed the Francis- can Friars in the Holy Land to continue their work of maintaining the sacred shrines and providing hope to Christians. Each year, the Holy Father asks each Catholic parish around the world to take up a Good Friday Collection to keep Christians in the Holy Land. The Collection supports the work of the Franciscans in the sacred shrines and allows them to receive pilgrims, minister to the parishes, provide formation and education in the commu- nities and schools, and care for the basic needs of the people in the Holy Land. During such a difficult season, your support is essential to their minis- try. Once again, we ask for your prayers, generosity, and encouragement for the Holy Father’s Good Friday Collection on Friday, April 2. We hope that, soon, travel to the Holy Land may resume safely and pilgrims once again will be able to experience walking in the footsteps of Christ and Our Blessed Mother. In the meantime, our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land are count- ing on you for help. With your help, the Franciscans can continue to be a light of hope to those living in darkness in the Holy Land. You may either donate on Good Friday, or giving online .
