REFLECTION: REFLECTION: SAINT VS. BLESSED MASS INTENTIONS (MAY 10-16) Question: What is the difference between a “Saint” and a “Blessed”? Mon 10 * * * No Mass Answer: Woodrow Brinegar (D) The process of proclaiming someone as a saint in the Tue 11 06:30 PM Catholic Church has evolved over the course of many by The Wood Family centuries. In the beginning, those honored as saints were almost exclusively biblical figures or martyrs. However, Wed 12 08:30 AM Elena Cendana (D) after the legalization of Christianity in the fourth century, new holy women and men came to be honored as saints, Thu 13 06:30 PM Andrew Breckenridge (L) and this was often done by popular acclaim or by the local bishop or abbot. It was Pope Gregory IX (who was pope Dot Brinegar (D) from 1227 to 1241) who officially proclaimed that only the Fri 14 08:30 AM pope had the authority to add someone to the official list by The Wood Family (the “canon”) of saints. This is the meaning of the word Fr. Leon Alexander (D) “canonization.” Today, the saint-making process includes Sat 15 05:00 PM several steps, including detailed studies of the person’s life by Cathy & Larry Taylor and a recognition that they died as a martyr or lived a life of “heroic virtue.” Once someone is recognized as a martyr or Tony Tallarico Sr. (D) 10:00 AM if a miracle is attributed to their intercession, they will be by The Tallarico Family beatified and honored as “Blessed.” This means that they Sun 16 can be celebrated by Catholics in a particular country or region or by the members of certain religious community. If 12:30 PM Hispanic Community another miracle occurs and is approved, then the “Blessed” is canonized and honored with the title “Saint,” meaning that they are now officially recognized as a universal model OFFER A MASS of holiness and an intercessor. ©LPi We invite you to offer a Mass for your loved ones, living or deceased. JOSEPH OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF JOHN PAUL II ON THE PERSON AND MISSION OF ST. JOSEPH IN THE LIFE OF CHRIST AND OF THE CHURCH The Gospel Portrait A little earlier the Gospel writer had stated that at the moment of the Annunciation, Mary was "betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David." The nature of this "marriage" is explained indirectly when Mary, after hearing what the messenger says about the birth of the child, asks, "How can this be, since I do not know man?" (Lk 1:34) The angel responds: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God" (Lk 1:35). Although Mary is already "wedded" to Joseph, she will remain a virgin, because the child conceived in her at the Annunciation was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. At this point Luke's text coincides with Matthew 1:18 and serves to explain what we read there. If, after her marriage to Joseph, Mary is Prayer to St. Joseph found to be with child of the Holy Spirit," this fact corresponds to all that the Annunciation means, in particular to Mary's final words: "Let it be to me according to your word" (Lk 1:38). In response to what is clearly the Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, plan of God, with the passing of days and weeks Mary's "pregnancy" is Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. visible to the people and to Joseph; she appears before them as one who To you God entrusted His only Son; must give birth and carry within herself the mystery of motherhood. in you Mary placed her trust; 3. ECHO ECHO OF MARY Queen of peace 156 March-April 2001 - Info Our Lady's message of 25 January 2001: Dear Children, Today I invite you to renew prayer and fasting with even more enthusiasm, until prayer becomes joy for you. My Children, the one who prays does not fear for the future, and the one who fasts does not fear evil. I say to you once again: it is only with prayer and fasts that even wars can be stopped - the wars of your unbelief and of your fear for the future. I am with you, and I teach you, my Children, that in God lies your peace and your hope. So come close to God and give Him first place in your lives. Thank you for responding to my call. In God is peace and hope Our faith is based on God's love for us. God loves each of us. Humanly speaking, His love is incredible. It flows through the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Believing in God's love is the indispensable premise to our response of love. We must believe that in God is our peace; we must place our hope in Him. We must come close to God and give Him first place in our lives. This is what Mary teaches; this is the essence of her every message. Living our faith is acknowledging the lordship of God's love and responding to this love with love that involves all our faculties, and which cancels the distance between us and the others (cf.

  • Discipline #3 – Strive to Be a Spiritual Father Like St. Joseph
Discipline #3 – Strive to be a Spiritual Father like St. Joseph Catholic Watchmen are Called to be Spiritual Fathers The perpetual Spiritual Combat – A Catholic Watchmen is a Catholic man who persistently commits to “step into the breach” (Ezek 22:30) to be a protector, provider and leader for his family, his parish and for the Church. Persistent viGilance is essential in the Spiritual Combat as Satan relentlessly attacks men, knowinG that if the man is corrupted, the family scatters and becomes easier to attack. Satan divides and conquers. Men must answer the call to Spiritual Fatherhood – Most men are “Good dads” who attempt to provide their children’s necessities (shelter, food, education, etc.). But beinG a “Good dad” is insufficient for eternal life; there are no “Good” souls in heaven, only “saints.” Christ’s call to “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt 28:19) requires Catholic men to be spiritual fathers who shepherd many souls (especially their own children) to become adopted children of God. It is every Catholic man’s duty to be a spiritual father. St. Joseph is the Model for Spiritual Fatherhood Joseph is exalted as a father by God – The Father selects Joseph to be the husband of the Blessed VirGin Mary and the foster father of the Son. Mary, the Immaculate of God, places her full trust in Joseph to be her Son’s father. Jesus eXalts Joseph by His love and willinG obedience to Joseph’s fatherhood (Luke 2:51). Joseph is a spiritual father to Jesus – Joseph protects Jesus from scandal by marryinG the preGnant Mary (Matt 1:24), leGally adoptinG (Luke 2:21) and presentinG Jesus at the Temple (Luke 2:22), leadinG the family to the safety of EGypt (Matt 2:13) and returning to Galilee and providing a safe home (Matt 2:22).

  • St Joseph's Devotion to the Church
Revised English translation 2ndApril 2021 Original text by father Fernando Mano Bixquert ST JOSEPH'S DEVOTION TO THE CHURCH First of all, it should be said that during the first centuries of the Church's existence, in principle, it was only the martyrs who enjoyed veneration. The earliest traces of public recognition of the holiness of St. Joseph are found in the East. His feast was held in high esteem by the Copts as early as the early fourth century. Nicéphorus Calixto says that in the great basilica erected in Bethlehem by St. Helena, there was a magnificent oratory dedicated to St. Joseph. The truth is, however, that the feast of "Joseph the Carpenter" is recorded, on July 20, in one of the ancient Coptic Calendars that has come down to us, as well as in a Synaxarium (martyrology) of the eighth and ninth centuries. Greek menologia (catalogues of Saints and martyrs organized by months) of a later date at least mention St. Joseph on December 25 or 26, and another commemoration of him jointly with other saints was made on the two Sundays immediately before and after Christmas. In the West, the name of the adoptive father of Our Lord appears in some martyrrologies of the ninth and tenth centuries, and in 1129, for the first time, we find a church dedicated to him in Bologna. His devotion, at that time only private, as it appeared to be, gained great impetus due to the influence and zeal of saints such as St. Bernard, St. Thomas Aquinas, Saint Gertrude (died 1310), and St.

  • 31St Sunday Ordinary Time Year A
4th Sunday Advent Year "B" Guardian of the Redeemer December 23-24, 2017 Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16; Romans 16: 25-27; Luke 1:26-38 On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, it is most appropriate to reflect on the person of St. Joseph as we put the final pieces in place for the birth of the Savior. In the litany of St. Joseph, we say, “St. Joseph, Head of the Holy Family, pray for us.” There is more hidden behind this invocation than meets the eye. From all eternity, Joseph was destined to be the spouse of the Blessed Virgin. Joseph was Mary’s husband, and she was his wife. While it is important for the Church to profess the virginal conception of Jesus, it is no less vital to uphold Mary's marriage to Joseph as real, because juridically Joseph's fatherhood depends on it. In the Jewish matrimonial procedure, the formal exchange of consent before witnesses (Malachi 2:4) preceded in time the taking of the bride into the groom’s family home. The consent or betrothal would constitute a legally ratified marriage, since it carried with it certain rights. Only later did the bride move into the husband’s family home. In today’s Gospel, we are dealing with a situation that takes place between these two stages. It should not scandalize us that Joseph might have considered infidelity as a possible explanation for Mary’s being with child. It seems realistic that he might reach a false conclusion. He was confused, puzzled and troubled by the demands of this faith Joseph’s calling by God was not what he had originally thought.

ThS 572 / Ford / Page 1 of 10 ThS 572 The Church in Consummation: Eschatology and Mariology / Fall 2003 / Dr. Ford Syllabus and Schedule Hee that lives in hope danceth without musick. —George Herbert, 1593–1633 Anglican Priest and Poet DESCRIPTION ThS 598 The Church in Consummation: Eschatology and Mariology analyses Chapters Seven and Eight of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, for what its says about the eschatological nature of the Church, of which the Blessed Virgin Mary is the icon. Eschatology has been described by Jon Sobrino as “Spes quaerens intellectum” (“Hope seeking understanding”). The first half of the course treats the traditional four last things (death, judgment, heaven, and hell) within the larger context of the Kingdom of God as the consummation of God’s eternal plan. The second half of the course discusses the place of Mary in the mystery of Christ and of the Church by surveying the scriptures and Christian tradition, Catholic doctrine, theological approaches, and the devotional practices of Catholics in the many cultures of the southwestern United States. OBJECTIVES Upon the successful completion of this course the student will have accomplished the following tasks at a graduate level: • the student will explore biblical revelation, Christian creeds, the fathers of the Church, magisterial statements, and the liturgy for what they say regarding the Catholic belief about the last things and about Mary (especially the soteriological and ecclesiological foci of Marian doctrine and devotion) and develop the ability to dialogue with non-Catholic Christians and others who differ with us about eschatology and about Marian doctrine and devotion.
