SECULARISM AS A FALSIFICATION OF HOPE The interventions of the Pontifical magisterium at the beginning of the third millennium are characterized, among other things, by an insistent and ever more explicit appeal to Christian hope. In the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa the very structure of the document is built on the consideration of the present and the future of Europe from the perspective of that theological virtue. One of the passages that the Post-Synodal Exhortation dedicates to the diagnosis of the cultural and sociological situation of the old continent—which is indeed perfectly transferable to other geographic and human areas—describes with intense flourishes some of the symptoms of a marked “dimming of hope”: “by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots—somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history. Many people are no longer able to integrate the Gospel message into their daily experience; living one's faith in Jesus becomes increasingly difficult in a social and cultural setting in which that faith is constantly challenged and threatened. In many social settings it is easier to identify oneself as an agnostic than as a believer. -

Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. ABSTRACT The encyclicals and speeches of Pope John Paul II placed solidarity at the very center of the Catholic social tradition and contemporary Christian ethics. This disserta- tion analyzes the historical development of solidarity in the Church’s encyclical tradition, and then offers an examination and comparison of the unique contributions of John Paul II and the Jesuit theologian Jon Sobrino to contemporary understandings of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that understanding solidarity as spiritual exercise integrates the wis- dom of John Paul II’s conception of solidarity as the virtue for an interdependent world with Sobrino’s insights on the ethical implications of Christian spirituality, orthopraxis, and a commitment to communal liberation. -

Is Believing in Christ Enough? Q & A about Salvation & Works WHAT IS THE PROPER RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL? Question from June 24, 2012 message: We base most everything on John 3:16 and call people to believe. But today's message seems to take that all away. How are any of us to know if we “hate” our families enough, or “love” Jesus just enough? Are we forgiven and accepted by Christ dying or not? We lead new believers to think that is enough when there is clearly so much more. How is anyone to know for sure they are going to heaven? Your sermon was great, and people need to know this, but it creates a hole in one's heart. It creates doubt. How can anyone ever measure up? How do we ever have peace? When I read what Jesus says I find it hard to believe that anyone can ever reach this heavenly goal. Thanks for putting it out there. ANSWER FROM PASTOR TONY These are very good questions, and I appreciate your heart and struggle. You need to remember that all sermons that I preach have a context. This Sunday's sermon had the context of confronting easy believism and casual, cultural Christianity. So my emphasis was more on a person's commitment rather than Christ’s work on the cross. There are other messages that I have preached that emphasize the grace of God and not falling into legalism. I did a message the Sunday following Easter, April 15, 2012, where I emphasized the grace of Christ in a person's relationship. -

ECHO ECHO OF MARY Queen of peace 156 March-April 2001 - Info Our Lady's message of 25 January 2001: Dear Children, Today I invite you to renew prayer and fasting with even more enthusiasm, until prayer becomes joy for you. My Children, the one who prays does not fear for the future, and the one who fasts does not fear evil. I say to you once again: it is only with prayer and fasts that even wars can be stopped - the wars of your unbelief and of your fear for the future. I am with you, and I teach you, my Children, that in God lies your peace and your hope. So come close to God and give Him first place in your lives. Thank you for responding to my call. In God is peace and hope Our faith is based on God's love for us. God loves each of us. Humanly speaking, His love is incredible. It flows through the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Believing in God's love is the indispensable premise to our response of love. We must believe that in God is our peace; we must place our hope in Him. We must come close to God and give Him first place in our lives. This is what Mary teaches; this is the essence of her every message. Living our faith is acknowledging the lordship of God's love and responding to this love with love that involves all our faculties, and which cancels the distance between us and the others (cf. -

Mystics belong to this cate gory. They can cross over any religious and confessional divisions. A my stic is far from being a bitter recluse, devoid of the sense ofhuman solidarity. Quite the opposite, his spi1i tual expe1i ence allows him to find the deepest bonds between people. He is able to discover that beauty, which is a herald of their ultimate rescue and transformation. Those who read the mystics' witness thoroughly will find in it a rejection of all fundamental isms or nar rowness of spirit. II EVANGELIUM VITAE To the Bishops Priests and Deacons Men and Women religious lay Faithful and all People of Good Will on the Value and Inviolability of Human Life INTRODUCTION 1. The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture. At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: "I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this "great joy" is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21). When he presents the heart of his redemptive mission, Jesus says: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (Jn 10:10). In truth, he is referring to that "new" and "eternal" life 2 which consists in communion with the Father, to which every person is freely called in the Son by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit. It is precisely in this "life" that all the aspects and stages of human life achieve their full significance.
