[email protected] EDITORIALE Europa, francescanesimo, islam Il presente fascicolo di ITALIA FRANCESCANA esce come “numero dop- pio” (nn. 2-3), portando a conclusione l’annata 2015. Uno slittamento im- previsto delle tematiche programmate per i tre numeri quadrimestrali ci ha portato a questa scelta che, tuttavia, non va a detrimento dei lettori del- la rivista, mantenendo il numero complessivo delle pagine sui parametri consueti. La sezione APPROFONDIMENTI ruota attorno a tre parole: Europa, Fran- cescanesimo e Islam, partendo dalla rilevazione di un incontro-confronto sempre più stringente e decisivo tra Europa e Islam, che provoca gli euro- pei (soprattutto quelli della zona “occidentale”) a porsi domande sulle radici cristiane dell’Europa e su cosa signifchi e comporti la presenza di persone che portano con sé un bagaglio religioso, culturale e sociale per molti aspetti diverso da quello che si è attestato nell’Europa “cristiana”. In una prospettiva reale di “incontro” la tradizione francescana ha molto da dire e testimoniare, a partire dal suo fondatore. Ad aprire la sezione è il contributo di NICOLA NERI, docente presso l’Università di Bari, nel quale l’Autore delinea l’apporto dato dal cristia- nesimo al sorgere e allo sviluppo dell’Europa, cooperando a innervarne profondamente le radici, innestate soprattutto nella considerazione della centralità della “persona” e della sua libertà. In particolare, viene eviden- ziato il punto di passaggio decisivo nello sviluppo dell’Europa (occiden- tale) a partire dal XVI secolo, quando l’ideale della “cristianità” comincia a tramontare a vantaggio della moderna idea di Europa, con l’affermazio- ne del nuovo valore di “laicità”, valore che, peraltro, proviene dalla stessa tradizione cristiana (e dalla Scrittura). Se il cammino congiunto di Chiesa, valori cristiani ed edifcazione dell’Europa moderna non è stato e non è né semplice né lineare, nondimeno l’Autore mette in luce come le dimensio- ni che la società europea attuale riconosce come essenziali per la sua iden- tità sono legate al rapporto fecondo con il cristianesimo, che costituisce a maggior ragione oggi un richiamo forte

SECULARISM AS A FALSIFICATION OF HOPE The interventions of the Pontifical magisterium at the beginning of the third millennium are characterized, among other things, by an insistent and ever more explicit appeal to Christian hope. In the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa the very structure of the document is built on the consideration of the present and the future of Europe from the perspective of that theological virtue. One of the passages that the Post-Synodal Exhortation dedicates to the diagnosis of the cultural and sociological situation of the old continent—which is indeed perfectly transferable to other geographic and human areas—describes with intense flourishes some of the symptoms of a marked “dimming of hope”: “by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots—somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history. Many people are no longer able to integrate the Gospel message into their daily experience; living one's faith in Jesus becomes increasingly difficult in a social and cultural setting in which that faith is constantly challenged and threatened. In many social settings it is easier to identify oneself as an agnostic than as a believer.

    SUMMARY Year 2003 marks the 25th anniversary of Card. Karol Wojtyła’s appointment to Peter’s See. The present volume of the Ethos, entitled T he Ethos of the Pilgrim, is thought as an attempt to point to the most genuine aspect of this outstandingly prolific pontificate. This special attribute of John Paul II*s pontificate can be perceived in the fact that the Pope has construed his mission as that of a Pilgrim. Indeed, peregrination appears to constitute a special dimension of John Paul II’s service to humanity. Pilgrimages have been a most significant instrument of the Holy Father’s apostolic mission already sińce the start of the pontificate, beginning with the trip to Santo Domingo and Mexico in January 1979. Actually, the agenda of John Paul II’s pontificate, which was to become a Pilgrim one, was clearly outlined in the homily delivered by the Pope in Victory Sąuare in Warsaw on 2 June 1979. The Holy Father said then: “Once the Church has realized anew that being the People of God she participates in the mission of Christ, that she is the People that conducts this mission in history, that the Church is a «pilgrim» people, the Pope can no longer remain a prisoner in the Vatican. He has had no other choice, but to become, once again, pilgrim-Peter, just like St. Peter himself, who became a pilgrim from Antioch to Rome in order to bear witness to Christ and to sign it with his blood.” From the perspective of the last 25 years one can observe a perfect coherence that marks the implementation of this agenda.

Rymarz 2 ABSTRACT This thesis, after appropriate analysis, proposes a number of principles, which guide both an understanding of the new evangelization as formulated by Pope John Paul II and how the new evangelization can be applied. The key insight of the new evangelization is that growing numbers of people, especially in Western countries such as Australia, whilst retaining what can be termed a “loose” form of Christian affiliation, can no longer be described as having a living sense of the Gospel. This makes these people distinct from the classical focus of missionary activity, namely, those who have never heard the Gospel proclaimed. I extend my greetings of peace to all of you – Cardinals, Venerable Brother Bishops, beloved priests, men and women religious, and lay faithful – who have gathered in Kyiv from different Countries, and not without sacrifice, in order to take part in the Congress of Catholic Laity of Eastern Europe. You have come to this meeting inspired by the same hope that sustains your Churches: Churches of heroes and martyrs, which amidst tribulations, and often to the point of shedding blood, have persevered in faithfulness to Christ the one Lord, in fidelity to the Catholic Church, in affirming the values of truth.A special word of greeting and thanks goes to Cardinals Lubomyr Husar and Marian Jaworski, without whose precious support this Congress could not have taken place. They come from two separate Christian traditions: Catholicism and Lutheranism. The concept of salva- tion is so crucial that it is the essence of understanding Christianity and, if recognized as the goal of every human life, the effort of understanding it becomes even more impor- tant. An insight into the notion of salvation, based on the indication of similarities and differences in its understanding, makes it more comprehensible and accessible to every Christian. The concept of salvation In Greek religion, hope and the concept of salvation were closely related to the philosophy of man, who was perceived with acute dualism: man consists of soul and body. In its essence and because of being intangible, the soul is divine, whereas the body, as a material medium, is a prison for the soul. In composing these papers we adopt the working assumption that our fellow Catholics act in good will, but that nevertheless a vigorous and well-informed debate is absolutely necessary if those who act in good will are to do so in light of a proper understanding of the issues. Evangelization and Western Culture: Abstract The Latin Liturgical Tradition grew up in the context of, and greatly influenced, the culture of the Latin West, but modern Western culture has turned against the values of the Gospel and presents a particularly difficult field for evangelization. Many aspects of the ancient liturgy are particularly unattractive to this culture, because the values underlying the liturgy have been rejected. These values, including hierarchy and the combination of reason, emotion, art, and ritual, are in fact the very ones most needed in the re-evangelization of the West, and their presentation by the Extraordinary Form is valuable.
