SECULARISM AS A FALSIFICATION OF HOPE The interventions of the Pontifical magisterium at the beginning of the third millennium are characterized, among other things, by an insistent and ever more explicit appeal to Christian hope. In the Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa the very structure of the document is built on the consideration of the present and the future of Europe from the perspective of that theological virtue. One of the passages that the Post-Synodal Exhortation dedicates to the diagnosis of the cultural and sociological situation of the old continent—which is indeed perfectly transferable to other geographic and human areas—describes with intense flourishes some of the symptoms of a marked “dimming of hope”: “by a kind of practical agnosticism and religious indifference whereby many Europeans give the impression of living without spiritual roots—somewhat like heirs who have squandered a patrimony entrusted to them by history. Many people are no longer able to integrate the Gospel message into their daily experience; living one's faith in Jesus becomes increasingly difficult in a social and cultural setting in which that faith is constantly challenged and threatened. In many social settings it is easier to identify oneself as an agnostic than as a believer. -

The Foundation supports initiatives of an educational, cultural, religious and charitable character, inspired by St. John Paul II, whose liturgical memory is celebrated tomorrow, and is active in various countries especially in Eastern Europe, where it has enabled many students to complete their studies. The celebration of the anniversary allows the Foundation to evaluate the work that has been carried out so far, and at the same time to look to the future with new aims and objectives. The Pope therefore encouraged its members to continue their efforts in the promotion and support of younger generations, so that they may face life’s challenges, always inspired by an evangelical sensibility and the spirit of faith. “The formation of the young is an investment for the future: may the young never be robbed of their hope for a better tomorrow!”. “The Jubilee Year that is coming to an end encourages us to reflect and meditate on the greatness of God’s mercy in a time in which humanity, due to advances in various fields of technology and science, tends to consider itself to be self-sufficient, as if it were emancipated from any higher authority, believing that everything depends on itself alone. As Christians, however, we are aware that everything is a gift from God and that the true wealth is not money, which on the contrary can enslave, but rather God’s love, which sets us free”. -

The Holy See MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER ON THE OCCASION OF THE 14TH WORLD YOUTH DAY “The Father loves you” (cf. Jn 16:27) Dear young friends! 1. In the perspective of the Jubilee which is now drawing near, 1999 is aimed at “broadening the horizons of believers so that they will see things in the perspective of Christ: in the perspective of the 'Father who is in heaven' from whom the Lord was sent and to whom he has returned” (Tertio Millennio Adveniente, 49). It is, indeed, not possible to celebrate Christ and his jubilee without turning, with him, towards God, his Father and our Father (cf. Jn 20:17). The Holy Spirit also takes us back to the Father and to Jesus. If the Spirit teaches us to say: “Jesus is Lord” (cf. 1Cor 12:3), it is to make us capable of speaking with God, calling him “Abba! Father!” (cf. Gal 4:6). I invite you also, together with the whole Church, to turn towards God the Father and to listen with gratitude and wonder to the amazing revelation of Jesus: “The Father loves you!” (cf. Jn 16:27). These are the words I entrust to you as theme for the XIV World Youth Day. Dear young people, receive the love that God first gives you (cf. 1Jn 4:19). Hold fast to this certainty, the only one that can give meaning, strength and joy to life: his love will never leave you, his covenant of peace will never be removed from you (cf. Is 54:10). -

Once again it is a great joy for me to welcome a group of American Bishops. In you I greet all the priests, deacons, Religious and laity of the Provinces of Louisville, Mobile and New Orleans. Memories of New Orleans encourage me to send special greetings to those groups that I met there: the youth of America, the apostles of Catholic education, the beloved black community throughout your land, and all those striving to meet the challenge of greatness in higher Catholic education. At the same time I remember in my thoughts and cherish in my heart all the faithful of America, far whom we are striving to provide true pastoral service in the name of “the Chief Shepherd of the flock” (1 Petr. 5, 4), our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In all the pastoral events that I experience with you, the Bishops of the United States – each event in continuity with the preceding ones – it is my intention to reflect with you on an organic pastoral view of our Episcopal ministry. This organic view must take into account the perennial exigencies of the Gospel; it must also express the indisputable priorities of the life of the Church today, both in her universal needs and in the special requirements of the Church in the United States. DIVINE MERCY TIMELINE AUG. 25, 1905 Helena Kowalska, the future St. Faustina, is born on a small farm in Glo- gowiec, Poland, the third of 10 children. 1912 Seven-year-old Helena hears the voice of God during prayer and feels the stirrings of a religious vocation. 1924 Helena, 19, is at a dance in Lodz, Poland, when she has a vision of the cru- cified Christ. He asks how much longer she’ll put off her vocation, and she leaves immediately to prostrate herself before the Blessed Sacrament at the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus Kostka. In prayer, she hears a voice telling her to enter a convent in Warsaw. She obeys and leaves that night, asking her sister to say goodbye to their parents for her. AUG. 1, 1925 After a difficult period of being turned away by several convents, Faustina is accepted as a lay sister into the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. In order to pay for her religious habit, she works as a housemaid for nine months. APR. 30, 1926 Helena Kowalska receives her habit and takes the name Sister Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament. FEB. 22, 1931 Jesus appears to Sr. Faustina, dressed in white and raising his right hand in blessing as red and pale rays stream from his heart. She records His words to her in her diary: “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: ‘Jesus, I trust in You.” He asks that it be publicly venerated, promising that souls who venerate it “will not perish.” He also says that the first Sunday after Easter should be marked as the Feast of Mercy. -

SUMMARY Year 2003 marks the 25th anniversary of Card. Karol Wojtyła’s appointment to Peter’s See. The present volume of the Ethos, entitled T he Ethos of the Pilgrim, is thought as an attempt to point to the most genuine aspect of this outstandingly prolific pontificate. This special attribute of John Paul II*s pontificate can be perceived in the fact that the Pope has construed his mission as that of a Pilgrim. Indeed, peregrination appears to constitute a special dimension of John Paul II’s service to humanity. Pilgrimages have been a most significant instrument of the Holy Father’s apostolic mission already sińce the start of the pontificate, beginning with the trip to Santo Domingo and Mexico in January 1979. Actually, the agenda of John Paul II’s pontificate, which was to become a Pilgrim one, was clearly outlined in the homily delivered by the Pope in Victory Sąuare in Warsaw on 2 June 1979. The Holy Father said then: “Once the Church has realized anew that being the People of God she participates in the mission of Christ, that she is the People that conducts this mission in history, that the Church is a «pilgrim» people, the Pope can no longer remain a prisoner in the Vatican. He has had no other choice, but to become, once again, pilgrim-Peter, just like St. Peter himself, who became a pilgrim from Antioch to Rome in order to bear witness to Christ and to sign it with his blood.” From the perspective of the last 25 years one can observe a perfect coherence that marks the implementation of this agenda. -

Základní teze práce stanoví, že Jan Pavel II. popisuje křesťanskou svatost jako osobní dimenzi - spojení Ježíše Krista s křesťanem a ekleziální - uskutečnění tohoto spojení v církvi. Metodologie aplikuje přístup spirituální teologie. Byly vybrány významné charaktery svatosti včetně christologického, gratuitního a pneumatologického. Každý z nich je zkoumán v samostatné kapitole této práce a souvisí s encyklikami, jež tvoří „trinitární“ skupinu dokumentů, a jsou považovány za exemplární: Redemptor Hominis, Dives in Misericordia a Dominum et Vivificantem. Úvod studie nabízí biblickou perspektivu svatosti. Poté následuje zaměření na všeobecné povolání ke svatosti v konstituci Lumen gentium Druhého vatikánského koncilu s určením hlavních charakterů svatosti. Christologický charakter svatosti rozvíjený v Redemptor Hominis ukazuje interpretaci svatosti Janem Pavlem II. s důrazem na Krista jako Jediného Prostředníka a nejvyšší duchovní vzor. Kapitola o milosrdenství a gratuitním charakteru svatosti zkoumá, jak papež propojuje milosrdenství se svatostí a jaké jsou související aspekty spojení Krista s člověkem. -

CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. The volume’s appeal is not limited to Catholics, or even just to those who embrace, or who are seriously interested in, Christianity. Its appeal is to any scholar interested in the history or content of modern CST. Gerard V. Bradley is Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame.
