The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER MANE NOBISCUM DOMINE OF THE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II TO THE BISHOPS, CLERGY AND FAITHFUL FOR THE YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST OCTOBER 2004–OCTOBER 2005 INTRODUCTION 1. “Stay with us, Lord, for it is almost evening” (cf. Lk 24:29). This was the insistent invitation that the two disciples journeying to Emmaus on the evening of the day of the resurrection addressed to the Wayfarer who had accompanied them on their journey. Weighed down with sadness, they never imagined that this stranger was none other than their Master, risen from the dead. Yet they felt their hearts burning within them (cf. v. 32) as he spoke to them and “explained” the Scriptures. The light of the Word unlocked the hardness of their hearts and “opened their eyes” (cf. v. 31). Amid the shadows of the passing day and the darkness that clouded their spirit, the Wayfarer brought a ray of light which rekindled their hope and led their hearts to yearn for the fullness of light. “Stay with us”, they pleaded. And he agreed. Soon afterwards, Jesus' face would disappear, yet the Master would “stay” with them, hidden in the “breaking of the bread” which had opened their eyes to recognize him. 2. The image of the disciples on the way to Emmaus can serve as a fitting guide for a Year when the Church will be particularly engaged in living out the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Amid our questions and difficulties, and even our bitter disappointments, the divine Wayfarer continues to walk at our side, opening to us the Scriptures and leading us to a deeper understanding of the 2 mysteries of God. -

MAY* ■ The purpose of this presentation is to articulate the philosophical anthropolo- gy underlying the teaching of Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Evangelium vitae and to contrast this understanding of the human person with the philosoph- ical anthropology underlying the “culture of death.” I will begin by considering the anthropology at the heart of the culture of death, continue by offering a critique of this utterly false and dualistic under- standing of the human person and setting forth the key elements central to the realistic and integral anthropology at the heart of the teaching found in Evangelium vitae. 1. The Anthropology Underlying the Culture of Death John Paul II explicitly and accurately identifies this anthropology in the first chapter of Evangelium vitae, a chapter entitled Present-Day Threats to Human Life. In identifying this anthropology he likewise sketches the authentic anthro- pology of his encyclical. The Pope goes to the root causes of these threats, declar- ing that the culture of death has its roots in «the mentality which carries the con- cept of subjectivity to an extreme and even distorts it, and recognizes as a subject of rights only the person who enjoys full or at least incipient autonomy and who emerges from a state of total dependence on others» (no. 19). It is a mentality «which tends to equate personal dignity with the capacity for verbal and explic- it, or at least perceptible, communication» (no. 19). The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which gradually took form in the second millennium under the guidance of the Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness. It blends easily into the spiritual journey of the Christian life, which, after two thousand years, has lost none of the freshness of its beginnings and feels drawn by the Spirit of God to “set out into the deep” (duc in altum!) in order once more to proclaim, and even cry out, before the world that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, “the way, and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6), “the goal of human history and the point on which the desires of history and civilization turn”.(1) The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a Christocentric prayer. In the sobriety of its elements, it has all the depth of the Gospel message in its entirety, of which it can be said to be a compendium.(2) It is an echo of the prayerof Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb. With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love. -

ABSTRACT The encyclicals and speeches of Pope John Paul II placed solidarity at the very center of the Catholic social tradition and contemporary Christian ethics. This disserta- tion analyzes the historical development of solidarity in the Church’s encyclical tradition, and then offers an examination and comparison of the unique contributions of John Paul II and the Jesuit theologian Jon Sobrino to contemporary understandings of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that understanding solidarity as spiritual exercise integrates the wis- dom of John Paul II’s conception of solidarity as the virtue for an interdependent world with Sobrino’s insights on the ethical implications of Christian spirituality, orthopraxis, and a commitment to communal liberation. -

My Children, the one who prays does not fear for the future, and the one who fasts does not fear evil. I say to you once again: it is only with prayer and fasts that even wars can be stopped - the wars of your unbelief and of your fear for the future. I am with you, and I teach you, my Children, that in God lies your peace and your hope. So come close to God and give Him first place in your lives. Thank you for responding to my call. In God is peace and hope Our faith is based on God's love for us. God loves each of us. Humanly speaking, His love is incredible. It flows through the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Believing in God's love is the indispensable premise to our response of love. We must believe that in God is our peace; we must place our hope in Him. We must come close to God and give Him first place in our lives. This is what Mary teaches; this is the essence of her every message. Living our faith is acknowledging the lordship of God's love and responding to this love with love that involves all our faculties, and which cancels the distance between us and the others (cf. -

The Holy See LETTER OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE MONTFORT RELIGIOUS FAMILY To the Men and Women Religious of the Montfort Families A classical text of Marian spirituality 1. A work destined to become a classic of Marian spirituality was published 160 years ago. St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort wrote the Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin at the beginning of the 1700s, but the manuscript remained practically unknown for more than a century. When, almost by chance, it was at last discovered in 1842 and published in 1843, the work was an instant success, proving extraordinarily effective in spreading the "true devotion" to the Most Holy Virgin. I myself, in the years of my youth, found reading this book a great help. "There I found the answers to my questions", for at one point I had feared that if my devotion to Mary "became too great, it might end up compromising the supremacy of the worship owed to Christ" (Dono e Mistero, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1996; English edition: Gift and Mystery, Paulines Publications Africa, p. 42). Under the wise guidance of St Louis Marie, I realized that if one lives the mystery of Mary in Christ this risk does not exist. In fact, this Saint's Mariological thought "is rooted in the mystery of the Trinity and in the truth of the Incarnation of the Word of God" (ibid.). Since she came into being, and especially in her most difficult moments, the Church has contemplated with special intensity an event of the Passion of Jesus Christ that St John mentions: "Standing by the Cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. -

The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER ISSUED MOTU PROPRIO BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF FRANCIS SUMMA FAMILIAE CURA instituting the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Matrimonial and Family Science Inspired by his great care for the family, Saint John Paul II, following up the Synod of Bishops of 1980 on the Family and the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris consortio, of 1981, with the Apostolic Constitution Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum, conferred stable legal form to the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, working at the Pontifical Lateran University. Since then, it has carried out fruitful work in theological study and pastoral formation both in its central campus in Rome and in its extra-urban Sections, now present on all the continents. More recently, the Church has taken a further Synodal journey, again placing at the centre of attention the situation of marriage and the family, firstly the Extraordinary Assembly in 2014 dedicated to “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelisation”, and then in the Ordinary Assembly of 2015 on “The Vocation and the Mission of the Family in the Church and in the World”. The climax of this intense journey was the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, published on 19 March 2016. This Synodal season has led the Church towards a renewed awareness of the Gospel of the Family and of the new pastoral challenges to which the Christian community is called upon to answer. The centrality of the family in the paths of “pastoral conversion”[1] of our communities and of “missionary transformation of the Church”[2] demands that — also at the level of academic 2 formation — in reflection on marriage and on the family the pastoral perspective and attention to the wounds of humanity must never be lacking. -
