Lk 24:29). This was the insistent invitation that the two disciples journeying to Emmaus on the evening of the day of the resurrection addressed to the Wayfarer who had accompanied them on their journey. Weighed down with sadness, they never imagined that this stranger was none other than their Master, risen from the dead. Yet they felt their hearts burning within them (cf. v. 32) as he spoke to them and “explained” the Scriptures. The light of the Word unlocked the hardness of their hearts and “opened their eyes” (cf. v. 31). Amid the shadows of the passing day and the darkness that clouded their spirit, the Wayfarer brought a ray of light which rekindled their hope and led their hearts to yearn for the fullness of light. “Stay with us”, they pleaded. And he agreed. Soon afterwards, Jesus' face would disappear, yet the Master would “stay” with them, hidden in the “breaking of the bread” which had opened their eyes to recognize him. 2. The image of the disciples on the way to Emmaus can serve as a fitting guide for a Year when the Church will be particularly engaged in living out the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Amid our questions and difficulties, and even our bitter disappointments, the divine Wayfarer continues to walk at our side, opening to us the Scriptures and leading us to a deeper understanding of the 2 mysteries of God.

A work destined to become a classic of Marian spirituality was published 160 years ago. St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort wrote the Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin at the beginning of the 1700s, but the manuscript remained practically unknown for more than a century. When, almost by chance, it was at last discovered in 1842 and published in 1843, the work was an instant success, proving extraordinarily effective in spreading the "true devotion" to the Most Holy Virgin. I myself, in the years of my youth, found reading this book a great help. "There I found the answers to my questions", for at one point I had feared that if my devotion to Mary "became too great, it might end up compromising the supremacy of the worship owed to Christ" (Dono e Mistero, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1996; English edition: Gift and Mystery, Paulines Publications Africa, p. 42). Under the wise guidance of St Louis Marie, I realized that if one lives the mystery of Mary in Christ this risk does not exist. In fact, this Saint's Mariological thought "is rooted in the mystery of the Trinity and in the truth of the Incarnation of the Word of God" (ibid.). Since she came into being, and especially in her most difficult moments, the Church has contemplated with special intensity an event of the Passion of Jesus Christ that St John mentions: "Standing by the Cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

    (IV) EVANGELIZATION AND THE PARISH I. Why Look at Parish? In recent years the dignity of the person and the role of culture have been central to the Church’s mission of evangelization. However, between a theological anthropology of the person and the social analysis of culture there is another practical dimension of Christian life that has been somewhat ignored. I am referring to the idea and function of parish. Helping parishes to become missionary, that is, to become engines of evangelization is one challenge that the Bishops of North America face.1 Understanding the meaning of Parish and its mission to evangelize deserves focused attention and action for five reasons. First, we often take the idea of parish for granted. In urban areas, the territorial definition of parish has very little or no meaning. People seek the parish and the Sunday Mass time that maximizes their convenience and satisfaction thanks to the car and a dash of the consumerism. Parish allegiance is diminishing.2 What idea of parish is really operative today? What idea should be operative and what should we be doing about it? Second, the Church is a catalyst or at least an arena for the dynamic between culture and the faithful. But is this happening at the parish level? At least one Canadian theologian has argued it is not and that in the future parishes may not be necessary.3 Third, immigration and multiculturalism have radically altered the presuppositions and expectations of what a parish is and how it should function. In the Greater Toronto Area, the Eucharistic Assembly is a wonderful sight to behold because of the variety of multinational faces.

John Paul II brought a profound and universal resurgence in Marian spirituality. John Paul II developed Marian doctrine in new forms, always building upon the living tradition of the Church. He is not only a faithful interpreter of doctrine, but he expands new paths in his thought, theology, teachings and in his Marian spirituality. We could say that his Marian devotion was in many ways a particular charism of his pontificate. What is a charism? It is a gift of the Holy Spirit, given at a particular moment in history, for the good of the Church. This Marian charism was manifested very clearly in the life of John Paul II and in his Petrine mission, with his words, in his Magisterium, with his gestures and deeds. As the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum tells us, "Christ revealed Himself and to make known to us the hidden purpose of His will (see Eph. 1:9) which through Christ, the Word made flesh, is realized by deeds and words having an inner unity: the deeds wrought by God in the history of salvation manifest and confirm the teaching and realities signified by the words, while the words proclaim the deeds and clarify the mystery contained in them." Eschatology has been described by Jon Sobrino as “Spes quaerens intellectum” (“Hope seeking understanding”). The first half of the course treats the traditional four last things (death, judgment, heaven, and hell) within the larger context of the Kingdom of God as the consummation of God’s eternal plan. The second half of the course discusses the place of Mary in the mystery of Christ and of the Church by surveying the scriptures and Christian tradition, Catholic doctrine, theological approaches, and the devotional practices of Catholics in the many cultures of the southwestern United States. OBJECTIVES Upon the successful completion of this course the student will have accomplished the following tasks at a graduate level: • the student will explore biblical revelation, Christian creeds, the fathers of the Church, magisterial statements, and the liturgy for what they say regarding the Catholic belief about the last things and about Mary (especially the soteriological and ecclesiological foci of Marian doctrine and devotion) and develop the ability to dialogue with non-Catholic Christians and others who differ with us about eschatology and about Marian doctrine and devotion.
