AN ARGENTINE woman who grew up as the neighbour of the future Pope Francis claims she was very briefly the object of his affections when they were both 12. Amalia Damonte, now 76 like the Pope, still lives four doors down from where Jorge Mario Bergoglio grew up in Buenos Aires. Ms Damonte said it was clear early on that he was thinking about dedicating his life to God. She says in a hand-written letter he left for her, the future Pontiff drew a picture of a little white house with a red roof and wrote: “This is what I’ll buy when we marry.” He added: “If I don’t marry you, I’m going to be a priest.” Clearly even at a young age the future Pontiff had a remarkably clear view of his future.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 20:1-9. On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them: “They have taken the Lord from the tomb and we don’t know where they put Him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered His head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that He had to rise from the dead. Friday March 22 2013 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER THE SCO SUPPORTS THE YEAR OF FAITH A 23 Reformation within and outwith Church DR HARRY SCHNITKER gives an insight into the Papacy during the time of widespread Reformation in Europe and the Church’s own Council of Trent A HISTORY OF THE PAPACY

E ENDED last week’s instalment with a very un-histor- ical ‘what if.’ In real- ity, there was no longer space for a ‘what if,’ certainly not after Luther’s excommunication on WJanuary 3,1521. This series is not the place for a wide-ranging survey of the Reformation. A brief survey will, how- ever, be needed to provide the back- ground to the Papal response. The first great waves were felt in Germany and . By the mid-1520s, large swathes of both countries had broken with Rome. In Germany, it was predominantly, but not exclusively, the north and east that followed the Reformers. Princes wishing to reduce the influence of the Emperor on their affairs protected the Protestants. This increased after the Diet of Worms of 1521, where Imperial authorities sup- ported the Pope and ordered a crack- down on Luther’s followers. Even the Teutonic Knights, ruling East Prussia and the Baltic States, founded by Cru- saders, went over to Luther. In Scandinavia, it was the monar- chies that proved decisive. Sweden, which also ruled Finland, became Lutheran in 1527, and Denmark, which also ruled Norway and Iceland, in 1536. In both cases a state church was erected, in which the monarch replaced the Pope as the ultimate head. New movements sprang up, such as the Anabaptists, pre- cursors of the modern Baptists, who gained significant support on the ground, but were always persecuted by local, usually Protestant, rulers. In England, Henry VIII followed the Scandinavian pattern, and established a state church. The story is too well- known to require repetition, although Eamon Duffy’s conclusion that the Ref- ormation in England was imposed from above is still contentious in some cir- cles. Faith in time of doubt

I don’t even know what to say, Blessed Lord, I am so confused. I am caught in the midst of a violent crisis of faith, so uncertain and doubtful. I am going through a difficult time in what touches the depth of my belief. I am almost tempted to give in to impatience and despair. Something within me cries out for you, yet you seem not to be there .I have broken away from many childhood beliefs. I decided to let me Faith pass through the fil- ter of my personal experience. Suddenly, I found myself too far from you, from security and certainty. If I still turn to you, Blessed Lord, it is because I have not yet lost the hope of finding an exit door for my spiritual anguish. I begin to realise that by myself I will not be able to overcome life’s ambiguities and contradic- tions.I know the mystery of you continues, and that my Faith—existence is a challenge, to be embraced. The light of your occasional shadowy presence makes me see that my crisis comes from the depth of my maturity, from the depth of my Faith. The irony, Lord; there is a crisis of doubt only because there is Faith. Perhaps I have become too demanding and too positive. Open my heart, Lord, to the right attitude when confronted with questions of my Faith. A Novena for peace of mind
