Welcome to Italy! Our pilgrimage has be- gun! As we travel in our bus to Naples, we will see the picturesque landscape of Italy as we journey to the south of Italy. Upon arrival in Naples, we will visit the Church of Gesù Nuovo, built in 1470 for a noble family, but today it serves the Jesuit Community and their pasto- ral presence. Under the altar, we will see and be able to pray at the tomb of St. Joseph Moscati, a medical doctor who was can- onized by Pope John Paul II in 1987. Dr. Moscati's philosophy for medical practice was to save souls by caring for the body. He be- lieved that the health of the body depended upon the soul remaining in the state of grace. Next we will visit the site of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Then we visit the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary and learn more of the life of Blessed Bartolo Longo, whom Pope John Paul II called, " An Apostle of the Rosary" and mentioned him specifically in his apostolic letter "Rosarium Virginis Mari- ae" (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary). Dinner and overnight in Pompeii (D) DAY 3 – SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 POMPEII / PIETRELCINA / PIANA ROMANA / SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO After breakfast we depart for Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Padre Pio, in the Campania region of southern Italy. We will visit the home where Francesco Forgione (later named Padre Pio) was born in 1887, the Church of San- ta Ana, where he was baptized, and Santa Maria Degli Angeli, where he celebrated his first Mass. Next we will visit Piana Romano, the site where Padre Pio received the sacred stigmata (wounds of Christ) on September 20, 1918, while hearing confessions. After this, we will continue towards San Giovanni Rotondo, the place where St. Padre Pio spent 52 years of his life as a Franciscan Friar. Dinner and overnight in San Giovanni Rotondo (B,D) DAY 4 - MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO / MONTE SANT’ANGELO / LANCIANO We begin our day with Mass, and followed by time for personal devotions and tour of the church and museum. Con- sider praying before the same crucifix from which Padre Pio received the Stigmata; also visit the confessional room where Padre Pio heard confessions over a five-year period for fifteen to nineteen hours a day. Next we will travel to the Gargano Peninsula to the Grotto of St. Michael. This is the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to St. Michael. St. Francis of Assisi visited the Sanctuary, but feeling unworthy to enter the grotto, stopped in prayer and meditation at the entrance, kissed a stone, and carved on it the sign of the cross in the form “T” (tau). Following free time for lunch (on own) we will continue on to Lanciano, the site of the 8th Century Eucharistic Miracle. A priest, who was himself doubtful the true presence of the Eucharist, said the words of consecration, at which point, the host was transformed into a living piece of flesh and the wine transformed into real blood. Today is your opportunity to follow the millions of believers who, since the 8th century, have come to pray before this Eucharistic Miracle. Dinner and overnight in Lanciano (B,D) DAY 5- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 LANCIANO / MANOPPELLO / NORCIA After breakfast we depart for Manoppello where we will see the Face of Jesus, or more commonly known as Ve- ronica’s Veil. The most recent evidence suggests this is the face cloth Jesus left behind in the tomb. An expert guide from the shrine will unfold the mystery behind this piece of cloth, which illustrates the relationship between the Holy Face and the Shroud of Turin. Mass will the offered here, followed by time to pray before this image and learn more about its history. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI visited this site and composed a beautiful prayer in memory of his Apostolic Visit. The prayer cards with that prayer on it are available to purchase in the bookstore. This afternoon we continue on to Norcia, a small town in the province of Perugia and the birthplace of St. Benedict and his sister, St. Scholastica. We will partake in evening prayer with the Benedictine Community, where our hearts will be lifted up by the beauty of their Gregorian Chant. Dinner and overnight in Norcia (B,D) DAY 6 - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 NORCIA / ROME Following morning Mass, we will visit the Monastery of St. Benedict, built over the birthplace of Benedict and his sister Scholastica in the 5th century. Approximately 50,000 pilgrims visit this site each year and enjoy the hospitality in the famous Benedictine tradition. If you have a thirst, consider trying one of the famous beers, Birra Nursia, made here by the Monks. Following this visit, we journey to Rome, the Eternal City. Upon arrival in Rome, we will have an orienta- tion tour of Rome including: the Tiber River, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. Rome is a particularly beautiful city by night, so be sure to get some gelato, and enjoy this Eternal City. Dinner and Overnight in Rome (B,D) DAY 7 – THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 ROME: THE MAJOR PAPAL BASILICAS This morning we will visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major, called Major because it is the largest Church devoted to Mary in Rome. Pope Francis began his first full day as pontiff with a visit to the basilica on March 14, 2013. The Holy Father regularly comes here to pray before the image of Salus Populi Romani, which depicts Mary as the “health and protectress of the Roman people”. The purpose of this basilica is to honor the Virgin Mary as Theotokos(God-Bearer). Under the high altar we can pray before the Crypt of the Nativity, said to contain wood from the holy crib of the nativity in Bethlehem. This is also the burial site of St. Jerome, the 4th-Century Doctor of the Church who translated the Bible into Latin. Before we take leave of this basilica, we will walk through the Jubilee Door of Mercy as part of our pilgrimage. Next we visit the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Rome, St. John Lateran. This is the actual Episcopal Seat of the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis. It is the oldest basilica in Rome. Built on the site of the former Laterini family palace, it was given by Constantine in the 4th Century to the Church and became the principal residence of the Popes for about a thousand years. With- in this basilica, we will see the great baldacchino over the high altar, at the top of which is a reliquary said to contain the heads of Saints Peter and Paul. Beneath the baldacchino is the High Altar, which can only be used by the Pope. It contains a relic said to be part of St. Peter's com- munion table. After walking through the Jubilee Door of Mercy, we will walk across the street and see the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs), a set of 28 marble steps which according to Catholic tradition, are the steps leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate, used by Our Lord during the Passion. The stairs were, reputed- ly, brought to Rome by St. Helena in the 4th Century. For centuries, the Scala Santa have attract- ed Christian pilgrims who wish to honor the Passion of Jesus. After a break for lunch (on own) we will travel to St. Paul’s Basilica outside the Walls. Originally founded by Emperor Con- stantine in the 4th century, the Basilica of St. Paul is the burial place of Saint Paul the Apostle. After his execution and burial in Rome in the 1st century AD, Saint Paul's followers erected a shrine over the grave. Today millions of pilgrims visit this church dedicated to the Apostle to the Gentiles. Also while here, we can see a row of papal friezes that represent 266 portraits of Popes.
