“Benevolent Supremacy”: Biblical Epic Films, Suez, and the Cultural Politics of U.S
“Benevolent Supremacy”: Biblical Epic Films, Suez, and the Cultural Politics of U.S. P ower Melani McAlister When The Ten Commandments opened in 1956, the critical consensus was that DeMille had created a middle-brow, melo- dramatic, and highly suspect account of the biblical story of Moses. Newsweek described the film as forced and “heavy- handed,” while the re v i ewer for Ti m e called The Te n Commandments – speaking in the epic terms of the film itself — “perhaps the most vulgar movie ever made.”1 Despite the critical consensus against it, however, DeMille’s version of the exodus story was a remarkable box-office success. It would become the best known and most popular of the cycle of reli- gious epics that swept the United States in the 1950s. For six of the twelve years from 1950 to 1962, a religious historical epic was the year’s number-one box office moneymaker.2 The Ten Commandments and other films like it–Ben Hur, The Robe, Quo Vadis–were offered up as pious activity. Ads for The Ten Commandments carried endorsements from a Baptist minister, a Rabbi, and the Cardinal of New York. And at luncheon in Manhattan just after the opening, DeMille told the guests: “I came here and ask you to use this picture, as I hope and pray that God himself will use it, for the good of the world...”3 But the Jewish and/or Christian plots of these films were narrated in a distinctly contemporary dialect, as tales in Melani McAlister, Assistant Professor Department of American Studies, George Washington University,Washington, D.C., USA 194 Benevolent Supremacy which moral virtue barely triumphed over elaborately staged sexual temptation. -

Our Faith in the School of Mary
IN MARY’S SCHOOL OF FAITH TODAY Introduction The Year of Faith opened by our meanwhile Pope emeritus Benedict XVI and continued by Pope Francis aims at the transmission of the faith in our secularized world. God’s providence foresaw a striking dynamic for this year commemorating the 50 th anniversary of Vatican Council II. From October to February we could attend lectures given by Benedict XVI. He taught us the content of faith and how to penetrate it with heart and mind. It appears that Pope Francis wants to send us to the areopaghi 1 of our times in order to become witnesses to the faith. A few days prior to the solemn opening of the Year of Faith the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops was launched. Synods can be likened to a graduate seminar, a think tank for the realities of the universal church. Last October the participants deliberated on how “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith” can succeed in our time. At stake is not simply boosting Mass attendance or advocating regular prayer; although a sound spiritual life was, is and will always remain at the heart of being Christian. Yet, evangelization aims at engaging broad social and cultural challenges 2 through a distinctively Christlike lens. In other words, faith is authentic and attractive "when, through our actions, words and way of being, Another makes himself present.” 3 Ultimately, such a transformation is a gift of grace supported by an educational process. 4 With this paper we want to consider the Meaning of the Year of Faith from a Pedagogical Perspective. -

American Vandal Episode
American Vandal Episode 101: The Crime Vandalism, Vulgarity and Destruction on March 15, 2016 written by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault TEASER EXT. THE HOME OF DYLAN MAXWELL - ESTABLISHING - DAY A modest southern California house with a patchy yard and a 2001 Acura parked in front of a one car garage. SUPER: April 2, 2016 INT. THE HOME OF DYLAN MAXWELL - KITCHEN - DAY DYLAN MAXWELL, 17, sits in a chair facing the camera. The framing is awkward; we see a light at the top of the frame as PETER ANDERHOLM, 15, slips a lav mic down Dylan’s Etnies T- shirt. PETER (O.C.) (PRELAP) Tell us your name and who you are. JUMP CUT: INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER A well composed interview setup. Dylan looks right into the camera. DYLAN My name is Dylan Maxwell. And I’m... I don’t know. I’m Dylan. What do you mean who am I? PETER It’s okay. You can look at me and not the camera. Dylan, why am I here interviewing you? DYLAN Because I didn’t fucking do it. PETER Didn’t do what? DYLAN The dicks. Cue music. Begin montage: 2. LOCAL NEWS REPORT - EXT. STAFF PARKING LOT - DAY The camera pans across the staff parking lot at Hanover High School. We see graffiti on dozens of cars. It’s all blurred. FEMALE REPORTER (V.O.) It was supposed to be a quiet “Administrative Day” at Hanover High - a day off for students as teachers took part in a series of mandatory faculty meetings. But there was one student activity that did, in fact, take place: vandalism. -
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum Are Still Going Strong
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels. -
