Come celebrate World Day of the Sick at our 8:00 a.m. Mass MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11 Anointing of the sick and Blessing for caregivers

February 11th is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by then John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the Memorial of .

Pope John Paul II initiated the day in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregivers. World Day of the Sick was first observed on February 11, 1993.

In his message for the 27th World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis urges believers to promote a cul- ture of generosity, noting that the joy of generous giving is a barometer of the health of a Chris- tian. Each year a different city is chosen to the host the World Day of the Sick - this year’s city - Calcutta in India. Pope Francis says that those who care for the sick and give of themselves with generosity and straightforward love - like St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta - are amongst the Church’s most credible evangelizers. Pope Francis focuses on Jesus’s words to the Apostles: “You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8).

One hundred and sixty years ago, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on eighteen occasions to Bernadette Soubirous, a very poor, 14-year-old girl, in a cave situated just outside the Village of Lourdes. The first of the apparitions took place on February 11th, the day we celebrate Our Lady of Lourdes. On this same day twenty six years ago, Pope John Paul II declared February 11th the World Day of the Sick. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has written a message that everyone should read on the them of his year’s two-part celebration, the image of the “Mater Ecclesia”.

In his message, the Holy Father points out that, just like “Mary’s maternal vocation for all hu- manity”, the Church, with its long standing tradition of service to the sick, keeps its own “maternal vocation to the need and to the sick. [That tradition] has found concrete expression throughout the two thousand years of her history in an impressive series of initiatives on behalf of the sick [. . . and] continues to the present day throughout the world”.

DID YOU KNOW? Pope Benedict XVI declared his decision to resign from his post as the Pope on this day in 2013. He cited his failing health as the reason behind his decision.

GOD’S SUMMONS Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Please pray for the sick:

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright ©, J. S. Paluch Co.
