DECEMBER / JANUARY It is time to begin to hand over my ministry and to plan for my retire- ment on August 6th 2014. The Altarnon parish will be joining up with , and St. Clether. Cardynham parish will be attached to the group. St. Neot and Warleggan will be partners with St. Cleer and Pensilva, from August 7th. St. Neot and Warleggan will there- fore have the Reverend Keith Lanyon-Jones as their Vicar (telephone number: 01579 343240); Keith will continue to live at the Vicarage in St. Cleer. In order to effect an efficient handover, Keith has invited St. Neot and Warleggan’s Churchwardens, Honorary Treasurers and Honorary Secretaries, together with the Worship Leaders, to St. Cleer Vicarage on Tuesday February 11th 2014 for a meal. Then on Tuesday April 1st the Churchwardens, Keith and I will meet at St. Neot Vicarage at 7.30 p.m. to discuss the pattern of services to be followed after the handover. I hope this helps. Meanwhile, Happy Christmas! Enjoy the carols. Andrew WARLEGGAN CEMETERY EXTENSION / CAR PARK St Bartholomew’s Church is in the process of purchasing just over one acre of land adjoining the Cemetery to provide much needed car parking and an extension to the Cemetery in future years. Access to the land will be directly off the road at the top of Warleggan village. The bounda- ry to the adjoining field will be fenced and a living hedge planted inside. It is hoped that a Parish Work Party can be assembled to plant the sap- ling trees. Watch the Parish Notice Boards for details. WARLEGGAN STRAWBERRIES I have recently had an interesting email exchange with Guy Dirix from Belgium. Guy is very enthusiastic about early varieties of fruit and veg- etables and his first enquiry was for information on Mrs Clements who he understood was “gardener in Warleggan in the rectory around 1860? I am very interested in historical strawberries and their creators. Mrs Clements was one of them”. I was able to respond that The Rev. Dalston Clements was Rector at Warleggan Church from 1836 to 1878. I believe his wife was Katherine and she was born around 1806 and lived until after 1881 but I have no other details of her life. Presumably she cultivated strawberries in the Rectory grounds? Guy Dirix has since provided further information on this early breeder of strawberries here in the remote parish of Warleggan. His latest email reads-

Here the varieties that were obtained by Mrs.Katherine Clements. They were highly regarded in French, German, Belgian, CS etc..strawberries catalogs, books and magazines. In the ' Revue Horticole ' from Paris in 1873 were three varieties ( 'Kate ' Gweniver ' and ' Sabreur ) described and added to the list of "the 50 best strawberries of that time"(" Tableau de 50 bonnes variétés de fraises"). Franz Goeschke german specialist of strawberries give in "Das buch der erdbeeren " (1888 ) praiseful descrip- tions of 'Cornish Diamond ' Crimson Cluster ' Favorite ' Her Majesty ' Sa- breur. But it was especialy' Princess Dagmar ' with its special perfume, who knew the most success in Europe. In the reputable journal " Revue Horti- cole '-Paris- in 1901 and in 1913 this strawberry received special attention by an article + colour plate. In 1931 this variety is still popular according to F.Lesourd " Le Fraisier " with illustration in B/W, Josef Vanek ( 1886-1968 ) also gives a nice coloring plate in ' Lidová Pomologia ' (1941 ) CS - etc ...

BARBARA HALL We were all saddened at the passing of Barbara who was a keen sup-

porter of many Parish activities. Barbara came to Whitewalls as a young child with her family in 1947 and although moving just into Cardinham Parish with Tony they both retained their links with Warleg- gan. Our sympathies go to Tony and the family.
