Our Lady of Charity Parish 260 Okell • 1901 Buffalo, NY 14220 (716) 822-5962 • OurLadyOfCharityParish.org Buffalo, NY February 22/23, 2020 From the Desk of Fr. Sam...

Monday’s Scripture readings for Mass highlight the relationship between faith and Jesus’ ability to work in our lives. St. James wrote: “But he should ask in faith, not doubting...For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord...” And so I’d like to make the point that a thousand questions do not add up to a single doubt, because doubting and questioning are totally different. Questioning actually shows your faith, because you’re saying to yourself: “I accept that this is true, but I don’t know how it’s true.” And, so, your questions seek understanding. Whereas doubting says, “I don’t think this is true,” and therefore, there’s no motivation there to seek understanding. The Pharisees in Monday’s Gospel were testing Jesus, because they doubted. Their looking for a sign indicated their doubt. They were basically like little kids asking Jesus: “Oh yea? Prove it!” Well, Jesus isn’t a magician. Because, with Jesus, faith is necessary for him to perform miracles in our lives, because love doesn’t force itself on another. And so it doesn’t matter how many questions we have for Jesus or His Church. Questions are good and fine, but it’s doubt that tie Jesus’ hands. Every Tuesday from 9 AM until about 10 AM we have Bible Study in our Parish Center, and on every Friday from 3 PM until about 3:30 PM in our St. Ambrose church site we have a Divine Mercy prayer group. At each of these meetings, parishioners, with the priest, bring their ques- tions about the faith, the church, and what we’ve read at those meetings and we discuss to gain understanding. And it’s when our questions seek answers, like at those two meetings, is when our faith is made more solid. Consider joining us for either or both of those meetings. There is no cost or commitment. I am certain you will enjoy it as much as I do. Gratefully, Fr. Sam
