Pastor’s Letter Dear Parishioners, We are in the Third Weekend of the Lenten journey with the Elects and Candidates. We thank you for continuing to support and pray for them during these Forty Days of their discernment towards the Baptismal Font and towards the Altar of the Eucha- ristic celebration! We thank their godparents and sponsors who are with them at each step of their journey. We thank you for joining them with different rites each week- end, such as the Rite of Election and the Rite of Scrutiny.

We joyfully share with you the good news that we have many different retreats of- fered at each parish location for people of different cultural backgrounds. We con- gratulate the students who received their First Reconciliation this year. We thank the priests who assisted them to celebrate this Sacrament of Reconciliation. We thank their teachers who took time in preparing them to receive this sacrament. We thank their parents for their fine example by celebrating this sacrament with them. We are very proud of their parents for setting a wonder- ful example to show them the way to celebrate this sacrament and make this special event joyful for them (leading their children to Jesus Christ during this Lenten Season). We would like to acknowledge parents/grandparents who are engaging and participating fully in our program of Faith Formation.

We had an informative meeting with the parish leadership team at Sacred Heart’s Church. I was surprised with the information shared from each of the parish ministries at the leadership meeting. We have many different activities and ministries at Sacred Heart Parish that you may not know about. I have heard from their reports that they spend time to evangelize by reaching out to non– Catholics and Catholics who are not active in their faith; they pray with them, and many of those people are not familiar with the Church’s teaching, liturgy and worship. Therefore, this was an opportunity for them to invite them to join our parish ministry and activities. We are celebrating the V Encuentro and we are focusing on some areas that we want to share with the Faith Community, the Good News of our Faith. We had more than 31 people who came to the Pastoral Council meeting, representatives of different ministries within our parish. It was a good meeting, and I thank them for their dedication and May God continue to bless them!

We also had a good meeting with our Deanery last week with other pastors, parish staff, the representatives of different organiza- tions. Staff of the Archdiocese came to share with us the ministries that we support from our Annual Catholic Appeal. The Arch- bishop has opened a new office to support Marriage and Family Life, Young Adult Ministry, Jail Ministry, and other ministries that we had a chance to hear from, so our parishes do receive support from them in regards to these ministries. Our Deanery also sup- ports different ministries as shared from their reports such as the Hospital Ministry and the Detention Ministry and Catholic Schools. It was nice to have a chance to check in with other priests.

We had many different celebrations last week such as the Feast Day of St. Patrick. We had a big feast and celebration to honor St. Patrick last weekend. We also congratulate the St. Joseph’s ministry group at St. Ann’s Church, who gathered to honor him on his feast day. We thank members and the ministry of St. Joseph at St. Ann Parish. This ministry group is very active at this parish (i.e. they are also involved in the Knights of Columbus Organization in other parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle). The mem- bers of this group are married men, who join this group to receive support from other men, who want to follow St. Joseph who was a good husband and good protector of the family. Their ministry mainly does things to support the Family and the parish ministry such as support the pastor’s ministry when he calls upon them to assist with different tasks. There are many projects that have been done at St. Ann’s Parish that the St. Joseph ministry group has done and continue to do. I thank them for their ministry and their time to serve their own family and our parish. I am very pleased with this group, as when we plan for any activity that benefits their family and children, they are right there to work side by side with us. This is why we have many different ministries to support young families and children because they are there to make it happen. We also have the Legion of Mary ministry and the Mother’s Support group within our parish and they are always there to support us with any parish activities for the family and for their chil- dren. We thank them for their Faith and their ministry. We also have retreats during Lent to support them.

I am very pleased to know that we have different ministry groups in charge of leading prayers during these Forty Days of Lent. You are cordially invited to join us on this journey.

There is more information on our parish website that you are cordially invited to visit. We thank you for supporting the “Called To Serve as Christ Campaign” and they are sending us the information to thank you and to remind you of your commitment. If you have any questions in this area, please call Sister Kim! I am working with the Financial Council and accountant to prepare for the coming year’s budget. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family! There are many parishioners who are sick from the homebound and families who are mourning for their love ones. Please remember them in your Lenten prayers!

Sincerely, Yours in Christ,

‘A great sign of hope’: More than 1,100 at- tend Rites of Election Nearly 1,200 people preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation at Easter are participating in special liturgies this month with the bishops of the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion “are the final stage of recognition by the bishop that those in RCIA have been ‘elected’ (chosen) by God to enter the Church at the Easter Vigil,” Archbishop J. Peter Sartain explained in an email to Northwest Catholic. Archbishop Sartain and Auxiliary Bishops Eusebio Elizondo and Daniel Mueggenborg are celebrating eight Rites of Election from March 7 through March 16 at parishes from Bellingham to Vancouver. “Three different groups participate in the rite,” said Jennifer Day, liturgy coordinator for the archdiocese: 1. catechumens, who will be baptized and confirmed and receive first Communion at the Easter Vigil; 2. candidates for full communion with the Catholic Church, who were baptized in another faith tradition; 3. adults who were baptized as Catholics but previously uncatechized, who now seek the sacraments of confirmation and Eucharist. Approximately 769 catechumens and 424 candidates for full communion, confirmation and Eucharist are scheduled to attend the rites, Day said. This year’s is the largest class of catechumens in the archdiocese since 2011, she noted.

Mission Statement: We, parishioners of St Ann Parish, are a Catholic faith community in the south end of Tacoma who proclaim the Gospels and embrace our many cultures and the gifts we share. We come together as one faith com- munity to celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We are grateful to those who built this place of worship with faith, sacrifice and sanctified it with their many years of devotion. We remain focused on our Roman Catholic traditions and promote an environment of hope, where all can grow into the likeness of Christ.
