The Great Northern Greenway is a thriving, local ecosystem that connects the northern half of and weaves together communities. It encompasses state-of-the-art bike/ infrastructure, public art, and green gathering spaces in a safe, welcoming and actively used corridor.

The Great Northern Greenway offers: • A green community connector across northern Minneapolis, linking Theodore Wirth on the west to the Diagonal on the east. • Connects North and Northeast Minneapolis neighborhoods. • Building on planned reconstruction of 26th Avenue N and portions of 18th Ave NE, the trail will close significant gaps in the area’s pedestrian and biking infrastructure. • Addresses a need for non-motorized access across the most densely populated areas of North and Northeast Minneapolis – comparable to the greenways across South Minneapolis. • Creates an education corridor – linking Nellie Stone Johnson Community School and Edison High School. • Creates a link across the , with change in ownership of the railroad bridge. • Existing connections along the river will allow for easy access to north-south travel.

This is a natural link across the middle of North and Northeast Minneapolis with connections to Wirth Park , the Diagonal Trail and the Grand Rounds. How is the greenway going to cross the river? The long term plan is to cross the river on or near the railroad bridge that crosses the river between 26th Ave N and 16th Ave NE. What’s next?

• Work with the City of Minneapolis on the planned reconstruction of 26th Ave N and 18th Ave NE to incorporate easily accessible bikeways and walkways in the routes and close gaps in trails. • Build an identity for the greenway across the route, making it easily identified by all. • Gain access to the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge.
