The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Phil Littleford The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Background • Bob Littleford started the project in 2007 ago and had made significant progress • However, due to Bob’s illness and death the project stalled • Bob Littleford’s sons (Phil & Jonathan) with the support of their family, Vale Vision and the project team are now actively progressing the project • The project is not a tribute to Bob but the continuation of an important project • We now have a highly motivated team working hard to Bob on the Littlecombe site with first plans in 2008 bring Bob’s vision to fruition • We have made some adjustments to the original scheme in light of experience gained and more recent feedback Slimbridge Parish Council 2 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Definition & Scope • Project sponsored by Vale Vision • A Greenway route for Pedestrians, Cyclists, Horse Riders, Mobility Scooter, Wheelchair Users and Families • Incorporating “Safe Routes to Schools” and a link to Route 41 of the National Cycle Network • Included in County, District Local Plans, Neigbourhood plans, community plans and the masterplans for Littlecombe and NE Cam developments • The project team is a lobbying group working with all the local councils, developers and other groups to get the Greenway built Slimbridge Parish Council 3 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Approach • This project will be delivered step-by-step, bit-by-bit • We will overcome each challenge as and when we can • Sections will be built whenever possible and eventually be linked to provide an end-to-end Greenway • Examples - Littlecombe Development, Ferney to Bymacks, Box Road e.g. part of the route is already open and being used at the Cam end of the Littlecombe Development Slimbridge Parish Council 4 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Route • Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway (including Safe Routes to Schools) • 8km cycle & pedestrian greenway linking Uley, Dursley and Cam (as far as railway station) and the National Cycle Network in the Vale of Berkeley • Much of the route will be through the Littlecombe & NE Cam developments and on the old railway line wherever possible • Key sections are: 1. Uley to Dursley (Footpath opposite Parsons Close) 2. Footpath opposite Parsons Close to Littlecombe 3. Littlecombe 4. Church Road Crossing, Cam to Memorial Hall, Cam 5. Memorial Hall, Cam to Cam & Dursley Station (NE Cam Development) 6. Cam & Dursley Station to Route 41 Slimbridge (Everside / Gossington) Slimbridge Parish Council 5 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Indicative Detail of Route Note: parts of the route are subject to confirmation and in some places changing footpaths to bridleways • From Uley along the Uley Road (path to be widened to hedge to create mixed use Greenway) to footpath opposite Parsons Close • Footpath opposite Parsons Close to footpath east of Ewelme Close • Footpath east of Ewelme Close to Ewelme Close • Along Ewelme Close to footpath to Ferney • From Ferney follow bridleway to Brownings Lane to Lister Street • Follow Lister Street down past Priory Close to Long Street • Follow Long Street to Littlecombe • Through Littlecombe along Greenway to be completed to Lister Road exiting Littlecombe just below Ricardo Drive on to Church Road (including ramp to Rednock School) • Church Road along entirety of Everlands (traffic calming to support Greenway will be built) • End of Everlands turn left and along Chapel Street to roundabout (investigating options to create pedestrian and cyclist friendly roundabout) • Straight across roundabout and along Cam High Street to Memorial Hall • Follow footpath down left side of Memorial Hall to former railway line • Follow former railway line along the back of Middle Mills towards Draycott • Enter what will become North East Cam Development and follow Greenway that will built through development to Cam & Dursley Station Slimbridge Parish Council 6 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Benefits • Supports national and local Government initiatives for healthier lifestyles, environmentally friendly transport, integrated transport systems and accessibility for the whole community • Supports Safe Routes to Schools • Rednock • Cam Hopton • Cam Everlands • Woodfield Infant & Junior • Dursley CofE Primary • Uley CofE Primary • Slimbridge Primary • Links with Cam & Dursley Railway Station • Link to National Cycle Network in Vale of Berkeley Slimbridge Parish Council 7 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Benefits cont’d • Safety - will be built to recognised standards – • Ease of use for all users • Eventual adoption Gloucestershire County Council Highways for on-going maintenance • Air Quality and reducing traffic congestion 8 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway Challenges • Drumming-up local support • There are challenges in the route – • Awkward junctions such as Everlands/Station Road • Crossing the M5 to link to National Route 41 • Uley Road crossing • Tesco roundabout • Middle Mill • Funding • Ensuring parties that have made commitments deliver on them • Getting people out on their bikes 9 The Cam, Dursley & Uley Greenway We have received support from - • Cam Parish Council • Sustrans • Dursley Town Council • Stroud & District Pedestrian & Cycle • Stroud District Council Forum • Slimbridge Parish Council • Dursley Welcomes Walkers • Gloucestershire County Council • Vale Vision • Uley Parish Council • Littlecombe Development (St Modwen) • Cam Hopton School • Tesco Cam • Rednock School • Charlotte’s Tandems • Mid Cotswold Tracks & Trails Group • Delta Bikes, Dursley • Dutch Cycle Embassy • Active Gloucestershire In February 2017 Stroud District Council committed £300,000 to support three cycle projects in the district including the Cam, Dursley and Uley Greenway 10.
