In a city where N the majority of residents do not own or have access to a car, this means there are few safe, extended, and uninterrupted routes for the majority of New Yorkers looking to commute, exercise, or enjoy all that their city has to offer. For years, transportation and safe streets advocates seeking to reclaim public access to the region’s waterfront with linear parks, combined with pedestrian and bicycle pathways, have called for New York to comprehensively alleviate gaps in this emerging waterfront network by investing in the Harbor Ring plan. Encircling New York Harbor by way of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the cities of Bayonne, Jersey City, and Hoboken, New Jersey, the Harbor Ring is an ambitious transportation and recreation project for the greater New York metropolitan area that integrates more than 28 miles of existing shared use paths and bikeways, including significant portions of the Brooklyn Greenway, a regional section of the East Coast Greenway, the pathway over the Bayonne Bridge, the Hudson River Walkway, Hudson River Greenway, and the East River Esplanade. 1 While much of the route already exists, many sections are missing dedicated bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure. -

Planning permission was granted in 2016 under planning application reference: DC/16/03654/FULL1 for a similar application. The application currently before the Council comprises of several revisions to the approved scheme. The application is accompanied by a Design and Access Statement. Location The application site is located on the west side of Holwood Park Avenue. The area is characterised by large detached dwellinghouses of varying designs but these predominantly have pitched roofs, and traditional/arts & crafts style. Woodlands was previously a large detached house in a mock Tudor style dating back from early phase of the Holwood Park Development. It is set back from the road and is set within significant landscaping. The area is particularly notable for the long green front gardens and extensive plots. -

LONDON STROLLERS WALKS PROGRAMME: JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2021 NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING COVID-19: Following discussions with Ramblers’ Central Office, it has been confirmed that as organized ‘outdoor physical activity events’, Ramblers’ group walks are exempt from other restrictions on social gatherings. This means that group walks in London can continue to go ahead. Each walk is required to meet certain requirements, including maintenance of a register for Test and Trace purposes, and completion of risk assessments. There is no longer a formal upper limit on numbers for walks; however, since Walk Leaders are still expected to enforce social distancing, and given the difficulties of doing this with large numbers, we are continuing to use a compulsory booking system to limit numbers for the time being. Ramblers’ Central Office has published guidance for those wishing to join group walks. Please be sure to read this carefully before going on a walk. It is available on the main Ramblers’ website at www.ramblers.org.uk. The advice may be summarised as: - face masks must be carried and used, for travel to and from a walk on public transport, and in case of an unexpected incident; - appropriate social distancing must be maintained at all times, especially at stiles or gates; - you should consider bringing your own supply of hand sanitiser, and - don’t share food, drink or equipment with others. Lea Valley Walk Section 5 (Three Mills to Limehouse Basin)
Lea Valley Walk To reach the start from Bromley-by-Bow station (District Line): Turn Section 5 (Three Mills to Limehouse Basin) left out of the station and at once go under the underpass and come up to pavement level on the far side of the main road. Go right to walk north, then Version 3 : July 2011 turn right down Three Mill Lane. Directions: Having come up the towpath ramp onto Three Mill Lane, turn left to cross the canal, and then turn right down another towpath ramp. There was a mill here in Saxon times, in fact at one stage four mills were Start: Three Mills (TQ382828) here, driven by sea and river water which came up the Lea at high tide. The clock tower dates from about 1750. The Club History quotes “Bells Life In London” of Weds October 27th 1869 on the first run of Peckham Hare & Hounds, “The first meet of this Club took place on Saturday, the 23rd inst., at the King’s Arms, Peckham Rye…. The hares… were sent off at four o’clock, and led the “run” through Goose Green, Denmark Hill, Lordship Lane, Dulwich, Sydenham, Forest Hill, and back to the Rye, making a run from nine to ten miles. Time of running, 97 minutes”. Peckham Hare & Hounds became Peckham AC, who became Blackheath Harriers, who became Blackheath Harriers, Bromley, who became Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC on merging with Bromley AC, who had previously been Bromley Ladies AC, Wigmore Ladies AC and originally Wigmore Harriers. Throw in a number of HQ changes, the Boer War, First World War, Second World War etc etc… it’s been a long journey. Happily the Club birthday fell on a Wednesday Night and those attending our Clubhouse were treated to free beer. We saw some people we had not seen for some time such as Carolyna Haley (nee Jones Baldock) and Mark Colpus, one of the scoring 6 when we won the Senior Mens National Cross Country title for the first time in 1994. John Turner brought greetings from Bill Clapham, who had earlier in the day cycled part of the original course at the age of 89, and from David Johnson who is currently in hospital. -

Alternative modes of transport within urban environments are viable options in alleviating many of these problems. This thesis looks the habits and trends of bicyclists along the Midtown Greenway, a bicycle/pedestrian pathway that runs through Minneapolis, Minnesota and questions whether implementing non-auto throughways has encouraged bicyclists to bike further and to more destinations since its completion in 2006. -
How Do You Lose a River?

In this paper I explore the concept of the lost river and the implications this Jonathan Gardner term has for our understanding of the history of changing urban environ- jonathan.gardner@ucl. ments. ac.uk In taking a voyage down one of the London 2012 Olympic Park’s now-filled waterways, the Pudding Mill River, charting it and the surrounding area’s diverse history, I explore how rivers end up becoming losable. Drawing on diverse methodologies from archaeology and geography and with a particular emphasis on mapping, I argue that a literal and metaphorical exploration of such a rapidly changing environment reveals a multitude of buried narratives and fluid histories. This research suggests that the labeling of a river as lost is not a politically neutral act and that, with its romantic connotations, the term may actually serve to legitimise insensitive and contentious changes to our environment. Much has been written about London’s numerous lost watercourses over the years, most notably Nicho- las Barton’s seminal volume The Lost Rivers of London [1] and more, recently Paul Talling’s London’s Lost Riv- ers [2] and Tom Bolton’s London’s Lost Rivers: A Walker’s Guide [3]. In addition to these works a large range of blogs and websites devoted to the lost rivers are continually created and updated, for example, Diamond Geezer 2015 [4]. The subject is one that seems to inspire intense interest amongst a wide range of people and would suggest that city-dwellers are curiously attracted to such forgotten or lost spaces, and in particular, the unusual juxtaposition of the natural and the urban these watercourses seem to present.
