Take a fresh look at the parks, waterways and heritage around Bow and the Olympic Park A self-guided walk inspired by the ‘Photos from the Footpath’ project DiscoverBow Looking afresh at the neighbourhood When dashing about day to day, it’s easy to miss the many interesting sights close to home. On the ‘Photos from the Footpath’ project, 45 local residents joined together on a series of walks. We used photography to look afresh at the parks, 1 Set o! from Mile End crossroads waterways, streets and landmarks in and around Bow. And stories from local history helped put the neighbourhood in context. Our walk begins on top of the Green Bridge – a millennium project to carry Mile End Park high above the tra"c. Here there’s Head out on this walk and, like us, you can discover tranquil a bird’s-eye view of High Street 2012, red-brick Guardian Angels, canals, taste smoked salmon on Fish Island, witness the latest and the Gherkin beyond. There are spectacular skylines too from Olympic developments, peer behind-the-scenes at the House Mill, the top of the mound, created in the footprint of the New Globe and explore the Cemetery Park’s wild charms. MeridianMeridian CuttingsCuttings Issue No. 004 Spring 2013 The newsletter of the North & East and South London branches of The Inland Waterways Association Campaigning for the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of the Inland Waterways - 1 - elcome to the Spring edition of Meridian Cuttings - although Spring seems as far away as when I was writing the last editorial in December. In preparation for our trip from Audlem, in Cheshire, to Canalway Cavalcade at WLittle Venice (see page 12) Alan and I had our boat, Tickety Boo, de winterised in mid March. Having spent two weekends attempting some paint patching in howling winds and blizzards we’re very much hoping the weather improves soon. We’re very excited about our trip and, at the last count, we’ll be amongst 148 other boats assembling for the 30th year of Cavalcade. Why not put in a couple of hours helping - there are lots of interesting things to do - give Libby a ring and she’ll give you some details. In preparation for the better weather waterside there are towpath walks you can join - take a look at the programme on page 8, and lots of opportunities to help smarten up a waterway near you - see Alison Smedley’s message on page 16, the C&RT Taskforce Diary on page 18, and the Wandle Community River Cleanups programme on page 22. There are lots of other snippets for you - some views of Deptford you may not have seen on page 15, Ian Shacklock’s concerns about the threat to Holborn Studios under the Eagle Wharf Regeneration scheme on page 9 and an update on the judgement against British Waterways (C&RT) also on page 9. -

EXAMINATION IN PUBLIC OF LLDC LOCAL PLAN 2015 - 2031 PROPOSED ADDITIONS AND AMENDMENTS TO LOCAL PLAN Based on East End Waterway Group Representation made at the hearing session on 3 March 2015 MATTER 4: BUILT AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT New para 2.4 (p. 8) HISTORY LOWER LEA VALLEY Pre-Roman Marshland, saltmarsh and tidal mud flats with timber trackways and ford across River Lea at Old Ford on prehistoric routeway across the flood plain. 43-410 AD Roman Britain Settlement at Stratford and along the Roman road to Colchester on higher ground in Bow: the road used the prehistoric ford at Old Ford 1100s-1500s Medieval Eight Mills in West Ham: probably in one or more tide mills on the tidal River Lea and Bow Back Rivers Marginal marshland used as meadow for hay, eg Old Ford Marsh Bow Bridge built over River Lea (first stone arch bridge in England) and causeway across wide flood plain to Stratford Langthorne (c.1110) Cicercian Abbey at Stratford Langthorne By the 13th century, the tide mills were grinding grain (brought by barge down the River Lea from Hertfordshire) into flour for the bakers of Bow to bake bread for sale in the City of London. British Waterways Board General Canal Bye-Laws
BRITISH WATERWAYS BOARD GENERAL CANAL BYE-LAWS 1965 BRITISH WATERWAYS BOARD BYE-LAWS ____________________ for regulation of the canals belonging to or under the control of the British Waterways Board (other than the canals specified in Bye-law 1) made pursuant to the powers of the British Transport Commission Act, 1954. (N.B. – The sub-headings and marginal notes do not form part of these Bye-laws). Application of Bye-laws Application of 1. These Bye-laws shall apply to every canal or inland navigation in Bye-Laws England and Wales belonging to or under the control of the British Waterways Board except the following canals: - (a) The Lee and Stort Navigation (b) the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal (c) the River Severn Navigation which are more particularly defined in the Schedule hereto. Provided that where the provisions of any of these Bye-laws are limited by such Bye-law to any particular canal or locality then such Bye-law shall apply only to such canal or locality to which it is so limited. These Bye-laws shall come into operation at the expiration of twenty-eight days after their confirmation by the Minister of Transport as from which date all existing Bye-laws applicable to the canals and inland navigations to which these Bye-laws apply (other than those made under the Explosives Act 1875, and the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928) shall cease to have effect, without prejudice to the validity of anything done thereunder or to any liability incurred in respect of any act or omission before the date of coming into operation of these Bye-laws. -

Published 1978 Added to the site by kind permission of Mr Michael Parker THE NAVIGATION OF THE RIVER LEE (1190 – 1790) PREFACE As the men of the river frequently pointed out the Lee is one of the "great rivers of the realm", and it is only fitting that its history should be traced; indeed it is surprising that the task has not been carried out far earlier than this. Regretfully the story of its busiest period in the days of post-canalisation has had to be left to another, later Occasional Paper. The spelling of the name of the river has varied over the centuries. In 1190 it was referred to as "the water of Lin", in the fourteenth century as "La Leye", the cartographer Saxton seems to have been the first to introduce "Lea" to map-makers in 1576, in the eighteenth century it was not infrequently called the "Ware River" but the commonest spelling would seem to be "Lee" and it is to this which we have decided to adhere.
