PM10 emissions increased due to biomass burning for heating. Much lower values 20% of residential probably because emissions from fireplaces of lack of biomass and stoves were burning. allocated to urban areas while the rest were placed in suburban and rural.

FAIRMODE Technical Meeting WG2 - Emissions 7-9 October 2019 Madrid, Spain The new EMEP grid VS FEI-GREGAA: Athens 11 Residential heating / cooking

FEI-GREGAA It seems that no specific proxy value was used for the spatial allocation

Emissions per km2: 0.30 tn (urban area) 0.38 tn(rural area)

PM10 emissions from biomass burning were attributed at urban and rural areas based on urbanization and population.

Annual emissions per km2: 2.60 tn (urban area) 0.25 tn (rural area) EMEP 0.1°x0.1° The new EMEP grid VS FEI-GREGAA

12

Lessons learnt from the comparison with EMEP

1. Regular updates of initial data are necessary in order to import new sources, new fuels, new technologies.

2. Bottom up emission inventories depict more accurately the actual situation.

3. Spatial allocation coefficients define the profile of emissions. The expansion of the urban conurbation in Athens has brought changes to the land use, population density and building characteristics which definitely have an impact on the amount and spread of emissions.

4. Scientific studies should be in line with socioeconomic conditions Future work

13

 Complete the development of the e.i. in municipality level for Attica

 Complete the spatial allocation based also on the number of people living on each household

 Create temporal coefficients for Greece and Attica based on the survey’s responses

 Develop temperature sensitive emissions National Observatory of Athens (NOA)
