Overall most wines showed Judged: 30 good varietal characteristics, the warmth of recent vintages did mean that some wines lacked the drive to hit truly great results. Low scored wines had phenolic or reduction issues.

Top awarded wines showed youthful Judged: 23 purity of fruit with varietal definition. Fume styles need to measure oak contribution against fruit profile and weight. Caution with phenolics in aromatics there is a fine line. The most complex and engaging wines balanced purity with texture without compromise.

The best wines showed diversity, from rich, “older” styles to delicacy, with Judged: 50 pristine fruit, judicious use of oak and reduction in measure. Some 2018s were heavy-handed with phenolics and oak. The 2017s were holding freshness well.

The best had Judged: 47 beautiful oak management, varietal cool climate profile and lovely spice lift.
Early development of fruit and colour coupled with heavy handed use of oak was disappointing to see.
Oak regime is a consistent issue throughout the show and needs addressing.
