A tradition of being up to date

6 7 It all began with DM 20,000, a lake and an idea. When a reservoir was due to be built in the idyllic Sankt Wendeler Land at the end of the 1970s, master baker and confectioner Gerold Weingärtner was rearing to get out of the bakehouse. With the support of his wife and a building society saving account, he planned to open a café beside the new lake. And indeed, there was an opening on 9 March 1977, but instead of the originally planned café, 27-year old Gerold Weingärtner opened a hotel and restaurant with 36 beds – the visionary had already added to his plans while still in the construction stage.

8 9 What followed was a story that is beyond compa- re. In the 1980s, the Seehotel Weingärtner and its "Hailife-Bar" – a disco with a genuine shark aqua- rium under the glass dance floor – was THE place to be seen in the south-west. The Weingärtners also created a stir with the world's longest rotisserie – which is in fact official, because it's in the Guinness Book of Records. The traditional establishment remains in a constant state of change to this day, and is always setting new standards. In 2018 it became the first archery hotel in the Saarland with its own 3D training area and an Olympic archery meadow.

12 13 However, there's also plenty to see and do at any other time of the year, too. For instance, there is a 6.8-km hiking path and a 7.2-km cycle path around the lake. Bikes, e-bikes and guided Segway tours can all be arranged at the marina.

Bathing, fishing, sailing, surfing – Lake Bostal is not only a veritable natural beauty, it is also an exciting place for numerous leisure activities. The largest recreational lake in south-west Germany has long been an established holiday resort. In the bathing season, Bosen lido with its large sandy beach, children's play area, beach volleyball courts and fire pits for barbecues is the no. 1 summer meeting place – and it's only an easy 5-minute stroll from the hotel.

18 19 Sankt Wendeler Land in the Saar-Hunsrück National Park is the leading tourist region in the Saarland. Just look around, and you'll see why: the varied landscapes, wonderful hiking paths, an excellent network of cycle paths and, last but by no means least, the 120-hectare Lake Bostal attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from near and far every year. But fortunately, you won't notice much of that in the quiet location of our hotel.

This region appeals in particular to keen walkers and cyclists. A dozen award-winning premium hiking trails, including the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig which is rated the best long-distance trail in Germany, plus countless well-signposted routes for mountain bikes, e-bikes and racing bikes, criss- cross all over the national park. One of the favourite routes of hotel director Gerold Weingärtner is the "Offizierspfad", the "Officers' Path" between Selbach and Theley, which offers wonderful views and two beer gardens for your refreshment.
