Welcome to Ysgol Carno

Ysgol Carno is one of three schools within the Federation of 3 local rural schools which include Ysgol and Ysgol . The federation (Ffederaswn Carno, Glantwymyn a Llanbrynmair) share one headteacher and one governing body, ensuring that each of the three schools stay separately within the law by keeping their own individual identity. This arrangement builds successfully on the strengths within the schools.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to your child to Ysgol Carno. Choosing the right school for your child is important. Parents want a good education for their children, but we also want them to be happy and feel secure. At Ysgol Carno we believe that we can offer all of these things. We are proud of the extensive, balanced and full education that we provide across the school.

The National Curriculum is taught by experienced teachers. In addition to the development of linguistic, mathematical, scientific and technological skills, your child will develop confidence, self support, will learn to make decisions and develop the ability to state feelings and ideas. We also emphasise the development of the child’s social skills and lead them to form a relationship with other children and adults, and to be sensitive to the feelings and the needs of other people. The teachers will ensure that the children move on at their own pace in order that they may reach their full potential. We work hard to ensure that all the children feel good about themselves and reach a high level of self respect. If you feel successful then you will succeed. The language of the school is Welsh, but our aim is for every pupil to be totally bilingual by the time they leave school at the age of eleven.

We feel that your contribution to the process is vital and we take every opportunity to inform you about the ways that we work with your child. Childhood is a very important time and you do not get a second chance. You can depend on us to make the time as happy and productive as possible for your child.

Since 1st September 2014 a new Instrument of Governance has been established a new Governing Body for the Ffederasiwn Carno, Glantwymyn a Llanbrynmair. As a result the membership of the new governing body has representatives from the schools and in the federation. The School

Ysgol Carno is a Welsh medium school run under the control of the . The school is part of the Federation of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair schools. Ysgol Carno is situated in the heart of Carno village next to the Community Centre, the bowling club and the village football fields. Ysgol Carno is situated along the A470 between Newtown and . Ysgol Carno pupils usually transfer to either Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, Machynlleth or High school.

ADMISSION TO SCHOOL

The main aim of the school when admitting your child is to ensure a happy and secure transition from home/Playgroup to the school. The arrangements that are laid out below hopefully ensure that the seemingly large step of entering school is made as easy as possible for the child and yourself. You are welcome to contact the school to discuss any issues involved in your child’s admission, both in the period before and after they have started.

In Powys a child may be admitted to school, at the request of the parents/carers, in September following his/her 4th birthday, provided that the school has sufficient resources of staff, accommodation and equipment.

During the Summer Term the parents and children that will start school during the next academic year will be invited to an open afternoon where time is spent within the classroom and an opportunity to talk to members of staff.

Our Vision

Our objective is to offer each and every pupil a wide balanced, appropriate and differentiated education based on their ability and interest. We strive to give each pupil an opportunity to develop and prepare them for life in their society. In addition we strive to develop respect for their culture, heritage and also to develop an interest in their environment and towards the .

Equal Opportunities

The school is committed to giving all pupils equal opportunities and does not show discrimination against pupils or staff on the basis of their gender, physical ability, religion or colour. As a school we ensure that all the pupils are treated equally.

Pupils with disabilities / Accessibility Plan

The school’s layout ensures easy access to pupils and parents with disabilities. Special arrangements are made between school and home when a pupil with disabilities or Additional Learning needs starts at the school. There is a disabled toilet within the school.

ILLNESS

If your child becomes ill during school hours, we will contact you so that you can come to collect your child. In cases where we fail to contact the parent, we will contact the other telephone numbers, which you will have given us. We ask you to contact us immediately when phone numbers/addresses change.

Each accident is recorded in the Accident Book at the school, and a member of staff with a First Aid qualification will deal with the child. All members of classroom staff are qualified First Aiders.

MEDICINE

Pupils are not allowed to keep medicine of any kind. No member of staff is able to undertake this duty without special arrangement with the school. If it is necessary for you to enter into such an arrangement with the school it is important that you complete the application form available from the school.

THE CURRICULUM

SCHOOL LANGUAGE POLICY

This school is situated in a traditionally Welsh area, and in accordance with the policy of Powys Education Authority, Welsh is the main medium of instruction at the school.

When English speaking newcomers come to the school we make every attempt to ensure that they are happy and well settled before making every effort to teach them Welsh as soon as possible so that they can take their place naturally within the life of the school and the community. The Authority has Area Teachers who assist the school in this work.

THE CURRICULUM

 The purpose of the school is to nurture and develop the child as an individual and as a member of society.  As an individual, his/her physical, mental and moral growth must be developed and he/she should be given the opportunity to develop fully.  A child is also a member of a community and must be prepared to take a full place within that community.

Aims The primary aims of the academic curriculum are to develop: • skills of Communication, Numeracy and Thinking • scientific skills • ICT skills • the ability to communicate in Welsh, both as a first language or second language. • an understanding of the geographical, historical and social aspects ofthe local and wider environment including sustainable development. • an awareness and appreciation of the national heritage and culture through the Curriculum Cymreig • an awareness and appreciation of other cultures, religions and races • enjoyment of, and participation in, the arts • physical and mental abilities and an awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle • an understanding of the world of work and entrepreneurship.

THE FOUNDATION PHASE

The aim of the Foundation Phase is to enrich the learning experiences that involve children to be creative in their imagination and have fun while learning. The children have opportunities to explore the world around them and understand how things work by taking part in practical activities that are fun and relevant to their level of development.

The Foundation Phase places greater emphasis on experimental learning, participation and development among the following:

• Skills and understanding

• Personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual development

• Create a positive attitude to learning so that they enjoy and want new things.

• Develop relationship with children and others

• To use expression and observations to encourage their development as individuals with different ways of responding to experiences using their creative skills

How can you help your child?

Before your child starts school we ask you to encourage them to be as independent as possible. Please try to teach your child to:

• get dressed and undressed (please ensure that all items of clothing have your child’s name on them) • use the toilet independently • wash and dry hands carefully • share with others • to take his or her turn

Key Stage 2

Your child will follow a curriculum that develops basic skills– communication, reading, and writing giving them opportunities to interpret the world around them. Pupils will be taught in accordance with the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and the Digital Compency Framework within the curriculum.

The aim is to ensure that every child by the time he/she is eleven years old is fluent in Welsh and English; he or she will be a child who is aware of his/her surroundings and a child who will have been given every opportunity during his/her school career to maximise his/her potential with due regard to ability, age and interest.

The National Curriculum

The National Curriculum is presented from Year 3 onwards. The children are taught the statutory subjects namely:-

Each subject follows a work-scheme, which is an outline of the content and skills to be studied in each area for each Key Stage.

The nature of the whole Welsh curriculum is reflected in Ysgol Carno School Curriculum - we work hard to develop pupils’ knowledge of Welsh culture. This will enable pupils to identify the context of their local area and the wider community

Religious Education

This school has no formal, direct connection with any religious denomination. The work in this subject is based on the Authority’s Agreed Syllabus and a copy of this Agreed Syllabus can be viewed at the school. Acts of worship on Christian lines are held at the school, which will provide an opportunity for the children and the staff to assemble as a unit to share the experience of worshipping and rejoicing together.

Collective Worship

Collective worship services are held at the school, these being mainly of a Christian nature. This enables the children and staff to meet together as a unit to share the experience of worship and rejoice together. We welcome visitors to participate in our services, eg, Rector, Minister or Charitable representatives. Arrangements can be made for children whose parents do not wish them to attend religious services or studies.

Literacy and Numeracy Framework

The Framework became statutory in September 2013. Literacy and numeracy skills are absolutely essential in order for young people to reach their potential whether they are planning to enter further or higher education or the employment market. The National Literacy Programme and the National Numeracy Programme set out the actions the Welsh Government intends to implement to improve literacy and numeracy standards in . The plans for a statutory national framework and for a system of national testing are integral to both programmes. The key aims of the LNF are to:  help teachers of all subjects to identify and provide opportunities for learners to apply literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, and is broken down by year group  describe, with precision, the annual national expectations for literacy and numeracy for learners 5–14, and progression indicators for learners with additional learning needs  help determine learner progress in literacy and numeracy and provide annual reports to parents/carers based on teacher assessment so that teachers, learners and parents/carers are all clear how learners are progressing and what are the next steps. The literacy and numeracy tests for pupils in Year 2 to 6 will be held between 7-14 May 2019.

SEX EDUCATION AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Sex and Health Education is taught in accordance with the LEA and the Schools policy agreed on by the Governing body. An emphasis is placed on raising awareness and developing the skills which are important for the promotion of personal health.

Pastoral Care

During the school day the children are always under the supervision of a responsible adult. Teachers are not only responsible for their own classes but also any other child whom they come into contact. During the lunch break the mid-day supervisors will care for the children but the Headteacher and/or members of the teaching staff will also be present.

If a child has an accident in the school then staff will take such action as is necessary until the parents have been informed. Parents can then decide if it is advisable to take their child to a doctor or the hospital. In the event of being unable to contact parents, a member of staff will take the appropriate action i.e. arrange for the child to be taken to the surgery or hospital. Should a child be taken ill then parents will be notified and requested to collect him/her from school. It is for this reason that the school has the following up to date information on record:

 your doctor’s name, address and telephone number  your home and place of work telephone number where you can be contacted during school hours.  the name and address and telephone number of a relative or close friend  where your child can be taken in the event of your not being available.

I would like to add that all members of staff wish to work with parents and provide for all their children’s needs. Should any parent have any personal difficulties or problems which could relate to the well being of a child then all information received will be treated as strictly confidential and every effort will be made to provide the parent with any help he or she may require.

Teaching and Learning

Our goal is to produce learners who are fully motivated and increasingly responsible for their own learning. We hope to encourage pupils who can make full use of new technologies and will be able to learn and apply new skills effectively throughout their lives, whether at school, at work, or at home. Various teaching and learning startegies are used to engage pupils and to help them develop as part of our school and community.

Mind Maps:

The mind maps are one of the most powerful ways to enhance a child's learning. The map is a diagram that starts with the word / picture in central key, and then develops from the centre by combining all the words / key drawings with lines and arrows to show connections. Maps are used to:

● Assess knowledge and understanding.

● Share ideas.

 Make connections between concepts.

● Reinforce previous learning experiences.

● Challenge thinking skills and extend learning. Pupils create a mind map according to their age and ability.

Thematic Approach: Using Thematic approach children will have the opportunity to consolidate and apply skills in a completely new context e.g Week; school visits to RSPB, Assembly etc.. Focus on the skills: We use the Department of Skills in the national curriculum orders and Learning Framework for Children 3-7 years to identify what skills should be focused on. Teachers are aware of the current skills and the skills previously taught, and they plan to use opportunities, so that all schools participate in the ongoing development, application and consolidate skills

Additional Music Lessons

Mr Philip Pryce, brass instrumental teacher, Mrs Bache, guitar teacher and Ms Sarah Barnwell, violin teacher are all peripatetic music teachers who visit the school weekly to give additional music lessons to pupils in years 3 – 6. The children who receive tuition are expected to practise on a daily basis and bring their instrument to school on the day of their lesson.

Health Promotion / Eco and Global Citizenship

The school is part of the Powys Healthy Schools programme. Pupils are encouraged to eat fruit at morning snack times and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

The school is working on the Eco – Schools project, a program that provides a simple framework to enable the school to become more sustainable. The project promotes teamwork and helps to get pupils to understand what is necessary to live in an eco friendly environment.

Drinking Water

The children are encouraged throughout the day to drink fresh water. Bottles can be filled as and when needed.

Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

The school is part of a number of projects that promote international relations. The aim of the project is to develop an understanding and knowledge of the world around them and develop them to become global citizens.

Attendance

Attendance

As you know regular attendance is essential if children are to make the most of their time in school. In fact, regular attendance is essential to ensure your childs educational and social development. In cases of long or frequent absences, or persistent lateness the school will notify the Authority’s Welfare Officer. A letter will be sent to parents of any pupil whose attendance falls below 90%

Punctuality

The bell rings at 9am, all children are expected to be on school grounds by this time.

1. Registration period will between 9.00am and 9.10am

2. A record of each child arriving late will be kept i.e. after registration. If this pattern will continue then further action will be taken by the school.

3. If your child arrives after 9.30am, without a satisfactory explanation will be marked as late.

4. The school follows the ERW attendance guidelines.

Collection at end of school day

Pupils should be collected promptly at 3.30 pm. We ask parents to collect their children from the school gates. If arrangements are different to usual, the school must be informed verbally. This is essential in ensuring the safety of each and every child in our care.

Holidays during term time. Medical /Dental Appointments

In accordance with school Policy and ERW The school must be notified before guidelines any family holiday will be marked as hand if your child has a medical or unauthorised unless permission has been granted dental appointment in writing by the headteacher. Letters of request should be sent in at least 14 days before the holiday.

Absence due to illness

If children are unwell, or otherwise unable to attend school, parents are requested to inform the school as soon as possible by telephoning by 9.15a.m. or 1.15pm in order to make a record of an authorised absence.

The school must receive a written note explaining the reason of absence

the day the child returns to school.

Daily Routines

School meals

School meals are prepared daily and transported from Caersws School kitchen. They aim to provide a balanced diet over a three-week cycle and include a vegetarian option. Please see our website for current menu plans. The Local Authority has launched a cashless system that enables parents to pay for lunches via the Parent Pay website. Every parent has their own login details and are able to make bank transfers. Lunches cost £2.30 per day. The school is unable to take any cash payments towards school lunches. You may contact the Local Education Office on 01686 626395 for information about having free school meals.

Our Before School Club opens in the school at 8.00 a.m. - 8.45 a.m. every Monday, Thursday and Friday. The children will join the other children on the yard at 8.50. There is no need to book a place you just turn up on the day. There is a charge of £1.00 per child per day.

SCHOOL TRANSPORT

To qualify for primary school transport, pupils must reside at least 2 miles from the school. Powys Education Authority provides this service and an application should be made to the Authority should you need transport for your child. School Uniform

The school has an official uniform and we hope that we can depend on you to encourage your children to wear it each day. Setting standards is one of our priorities as a School and I’m sure that you will agree that the appearance of the pupils leads to pride in the school. The school uniform is as follows:

Blue Sweatshirt / Hoodie - these can be ordered with the school logo on them Skirt / Trousers – Grey/ Black Blue Polo Shirt – these can be ordered with the school logo on them Dark shoes without too much of a heel

Pupils may wear one small stud earring in each ear and one ring. No jewellery at all should be worn in PE or Games lessons.

PE Kit

Our PE consists of a blue T-shirt, blue shorts and light-soled trainers for sport and

exercise; football boots and shin pads for football. During swimming lessons pupils should wear - one piece swimming costumes for girls and swimming trunks that are above knee length for boys as well as a towel for swimming lessons. If your child wishes to wear goggles please sign the appropriate form available in the office.

School jumpers, hoodies, cardigans,

hats and polo shirts are available to order from the school office.

School reading and swimming bags are also available to order.

Home – School Links

Homework Appropriate homework will be given to pupils. We appreciate your help in supporting your child with completion. Reading regularly with your child would be a great help as would playing maths games every now and then.

Home- School contact As parents, you are your child's first educators. Ysgol Carno appreciates your role in supporting your child as they develop a positive attitude towards education and learning. We ask you to sign an agreement between the home and school annually so that everyone is working towards the same goal together

Sharing information with parents The school strives to update parents on activities, events and so on through the school newsletter, texts, Twitter and calendar. In addition, notices are place in the window for parents to access. It is important for parents to check their children's bags on a regular basis to ensure that the messages get home. Closing the school in an emergency. From time to time, especially in winter, situations may arise where necessary to close the school. Parents will be informed as soon as possible. However, if the school has to close at very short notice e.g Heavy snow, then this will be published on the Powys County Council website early in the morning before the school day. Notification will be given by staff at the main entrance and staff will endeavour to answer any queries by telephone. Assessment and Reporting

Parents' Evenings and Reports

Parents are invited to Parents' evening and open evenings termly, giving the opportunity to look around the school, to look at the children's work and to speak individually with the child's teacher. Written report will be distributed at the end of the summer term. Parents are also welcome to visit the school at any time to deal with their child's work or of just about any concerns that may arise. Parents who are concerned about educational problems, behavioural or physical developments are invited to make an appointment with the Headteacher at any time.

Assessment for learning Assessment for learning:

The school focuses on the attainment of pupils and how to proceed: What stage is a pupil on? Where are they aiming? What is the best way to get there? Teachers plan for creating opportunities for assessment for learning in order to develop detailed information about individual learners' strengths and areas that need more support.

Methods of dealing with bad behaviour

The school encourages good conduct and positive attitudes towards pupils and adults. But if any pupil behaves in contravention of the school’s code of conduct, the following steps will be taken. Each teacher/teaching support assistant has the right to draw a child’s attention to bad behaviour and to punish him/her by taking the following steps:

1. Having a talk with the pupil.

2. Setting a punishment – writing about the event, keeping the pupil in at playtime/lunchtime for one period or more according to the seriousness of the misconduct.

3. Send the pupil to the Head teacher to discuss the matter/event.

4. If the pupil continues to misbehave following these steps, the parent/guardian must be contacted by letter or telephone call.

5. The parent/guardian is invited in to discuss the bad behaviour.

6. In the event of regular misconduct, a ‘contract’ will be given to the child (with the support of the parent/guardian) to adhere to school rules.

7. In the event of a serious incident or where a child fails to adhere to the ‘contract’, the child would be suspended for a specific period.

The Governing Body and the Education Authority must be notified in the event of exclusion.

Friends of the School

Each parent will become part of the Friends of the school automatically. Your support is very valuable to us as a school. A warm welcome is extended to all to join in the meetings that are held to organise events and to raise money for the school. The Friends hold a meeting every half term.

Entertainment Evenings Books

School Council

The School pupils are represented by the School Council. Each year a new School Council will be elected by class members. Through activities such as circle time in class, the issues raised will be discussed at meetings of the School Council. The children will work closely with the Headteacher and staff to ensure benefits for all pupils. Meetings will be held regularly throughout the year between the Headteacher, governors and members of the School Council. The council raises concerns pupils may have at the school during the meeting and try to think of a way to move forward. 22

PUPIL VOICE

Pupils have opportunities to voice their opinion and share ideas through the school council and various classroom activites. This encourages pupils to take more responsibility for their own learning and creates an ethos of ‘Growing Together, Learning together’.

Additional Learning Needs

In this school special attention is given to each child with additional needs – whether they are exceptionally able or have various disabilities. There is a procedure to ensure that children who need additional educational assistance are given special attention by the class teachers and by the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator.

The school adheres to a strict policy regarding the teaching of children with Additional Learning Needs. Additional support is provided in the classroom, by the class teacher and the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator. The school will consult the parents regularly to discuss any problems and any further steps we will be taking.

School Action The school notifies the parents that their child is considered to have ALN. The SENCO and the class teacher collect information about the child, together with the parents. The SENCO arranges additional provision and ensures that an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is formulated to plan intervention in the school

School Action Plus The SENCO brings in specialists from outside to give advice regarding further changes that could be made within the school in order to meet the needs of the child.

Statutory Assessment LEA considers the need to carry out a statutory assessment and, if appropriate, carries out a multi-disciplinary assessment.

Following the LEA considers the need to make a SEN statement, and if 23

Assessment appropriate, makes a statement and arranges to monitor and review the provision.

Safeguarding

In our school, the children's safety comes first. We have taken steps to ensure that no external door open during lessons, and all visitors must come to the main entrance and ring the bell to get attention. In terms of school entrance we must work together to ensure pupils' safety. We also have a comprehensive whole school policy in promoting health and safety for all.

All members of staff within this school are responsible for the safety and protection of the pupils. If there are any concerns regarding neglect or physical, emotional or sexual abuse then, under the County’s Child Protection Procedures, staff are duty bound to report the matter of the school’s Child Protection Co-ordinator.

The school’s Co-ordinator may consult with professional colleagues as well as relevant agencies such as Health and Social Services. Following these discussions the school’s Co-ordinator may be obliged to make an official referral to the Social Services Department in accordance with the county guidelines and protocol. It is the Social Services Department who decides on the next course of action.

The Headteacher Mrs Bethan G Jones is the appointed Child Protection Officer with Mrs Bethan Williams Assistant Headteacher deputising in her absence.

The school has an anti-bullying policy and Behaviour policy. The expectations of the school, the rules and the response steps that are followed when necessary are all outline in the policy. It also offers guidance for you as parents on the way you could help us. A complete copy of the policies available in the school office, and the Headteacher is always willing to discuss matters relating to the conduct with parents and pupils. Key Stage 2 pupils follow the KIVA programme which focusus on positive and anti buling behaviour.

Extra Curricular activities

Urdd

The school participates annually in Urdd activities. Each year we compete in the Eisteddfod, sport and art competitions. Year 5 and 6 pupils have the opportunity to attend residential courses. Each pupil must be a member of the Urdd in order to participate in these activities. Urdd Club is held every week for all pupils throughout the school. Activities will vary between cooking, games and rehersing for the Eisteddfod.

Sports Cooking Club Yearly pupils compete in numerous Urdd A cooking club is held sporting competitions including football, for all school pupils. netball, rounders and cross country running. The pupils will be able

to take part in the

COGURDD competition if they so wish.

Visits and activities

Years 5 and 6 visit both Glanllyn and Llangrannog Urdd Camps. During their visit they participate in numerous activities both indoors and outdoors.

In accordance with the LEA policy, the school will ask for voluntary contributions from time to time, towards the costs of activities i.e. shows or educational visits. No child will be excluded from any activity if a parent cannot or wishes not to make a contribution.

COMPLAINTS

We strive to provide the best possible education for our pupils and to care for their health, safety and welfare at all times. All staff at the school are committed to do this at all times. Occasionally, however, you may have concerns. If this is the case please let us know immediately. We will do endeavour to resolve satisfactorily any reasonable problem that is brought to our attention. Parents who have failed to resolve the problems even after full discussion with the Head teacher should approach the Chair of Governors. The majority of problems are usually solved by now. On rare occasions, parents who are not satisfied can contact the Director of Education at; Powys County Council County Hall LD1 5LG

PRIMARY / HIGH SCHOOL CONTACT

During the school year, the pupils of Year 6 have the opportunity to visit Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, Machynlleth and Llanidloes High School. The pupils visit the schools and take part in various lessons, such as Technology, French, Science and P.E. There is a close link between Ysgol Carno and Ysgol Bro Hyddgen. Courses and meetings are organised regularly between the staff of all schools within the Bro Ddyfi Cluster.
