SIR H IDRIS BELL 1966010 Ffynhonnell / Source Sir Harold Idris Bell, C.B., O.B.E., LL.D., Aberystwyth. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1965-66 Disgrifiad / Description Sir Idris has regularly, over the years, passed on to the Library the current issues of a number of foreign learned journals. He has now presented to the Library his entire personal collection amounting to over 1,000 books and 600 volumes of periodicals (Dept of Printed Books). His Welsh interests are represented by some 400 literary texts, studies, novels, essays, and poetry, mainly belonging to the twentieth century. As may be expected for one so eminently known in the fields of classical and papyrological studies, Sir Idris's collection of books and periodicals in these subjects forms an exceptionally fine acquisition of which the Library can be justly proud. The section concerned with papyrology is equal to any of the other notable specialist libraries acquired in the past, and Sir Idris may rest assured that every effort will be made to develop it by the acquisition of new material. From the wealth of texts and studies contained in the collection it is difficult to select items for particular mention but the following will give some indication of the general quality: sets of the Oxyrhynchus papyri; Publicazioni della Società Italiana per la ricerca dei Papiri greci e latini in Egitto; Munchener Beitrage zur Papyrus forschung und antiken Rechts geschichte; Michigan Papyri. Schweich Lectures; Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum. Studia hellenistica; Chester Beatty Biblical Papyri; The Codex Alexandrinus in reduced facsimile .. (London, 1915); The Tebtanis Papyri edited by B. P. Grefell, A. S. Hunt and J. G. Smyly (London, 1902); Grammatik der Griechischen papyri . by Edwin Mayser (Berlin, 1938); Apokrimata: decisions of Septimus Severus on legal matters ... by W. L. Westermann and A. A. Schiller (New York, 1954), Papyri Greci delle collezione italiane by Medea Norsa (Roma, 1933-46); Excavations at Nessana . .. edited by Caspar J. Kraemer (Princeton, 1958); Mizraim: the Journal of Papyrology . Other well known papyrologists whose works are included are Carl Wessely, Ernst Kornemann, Paul M. Meyer, Peter Jernstedt, Gregor Zereteli, O. Krueger, Joseph Bidez, Franz Camount, Fritz M. Heichelheim, Ulrich Kahrstedt, Claire Préaux, Wilhelm Schubart, Ulrich Wilcken, and Karl Preisendanz. It is interesting to note the number of books presented by their authors to Sir Idris as a mark of their affection and gratitude. In addition to the above there are a number of books which formed part of the library of the donor's father. Among them are Dodoens Niewe herbal [? 1578]; Gerard's Herball, 1597; Bacon's Sylva Sylvarum, 1664; the [? 1632] edition of Salusta du Bartas; Pliny's Historie of the world, 1601; Ca1nden's Britannia; Minshen's Guide into tongues, 1627; and Harris, Navigantium atque itinerantium bibliotheca, 1705. I am sincerely grateful to the efforts of everyone who has helped contribute to the making of this Plan which is so important for the future of Powys. Importantly, the Plan sets out a clear and strong strategy for meeting the future needs of the county’s communities over the next decade. By focussing development on our market towns and largest villages, it provides the direction and certainty to support investment and enable economic opportunities to be seized, to grow and support viable service centres and for housing development to accommodate our growing and changing household needs. At the same time the Plan provides the protection for our outstanding and important natural, built and cultural environments that make Powys such an attractive and special place in which to live, work, visit and enjoy. Our efforts along with all our partners must now shift to delivering the Plan for the benefit of our communities. Councillor Martin Weale Portfolio Holder for Economy and Planning

S T R A Y S Volume One: !'IARRIAGES Introduction This volume of 'stray' marriages is published with the hope that it will prove of some value as an additional source for the familv historian. For economic reasons, the 9rooms' names only are listed. Often people married many miles from their own parishes and sometimes also away from the parish of the spouse. Tracking down such a 'stray marriage' can involve fruitless and dishearteninq searches and may halt progress for many years. - Included here are 'strays', who were married in another parish within the county of Powys, or in another county. There are also a few non-Powys 'strays' from adjoining counties, particularly some which may be connected with Powys families. For those researchers puzzled and confused by the thought of dealing with patronymics, when looking for their Welsh ancestors, a few are to be found here and are ' indicated by an asterisk. A simple study of these few examples may help in a search for others, although it must be said, that this is not so easy when the father's name is not given. I would like to thank all those members who have helped in anyway with the compilation of this booklet. A second collection is already in progress; please· send any contributions to me. THE ORDER OF BARDS OVATES & DRUIDS MOUNT HAEMUS LECTURE FOR THE YEAR 2012 The Thirteenth Mt Haemus Lecture Magical Transformation in the Book of Taliesin and the Spoils of Annwn by Kristoffer Hughes Abstract The central theme within the OBOD Bardic grade expresses the transformation mystery present in the tale of Gwion Bach, who by degrees of elemental initiations and assimilation becomes he with the radiant brow – Taliesin. A further body of work exists in the form of Peniarth Manuscript Number 2, designated as ‘The Book of Taliesin’, inter-textual references within this material connects it to a vast body of work including the ‘Hanes Taliesin’ (the story of the birth of Taliesin) and the Four Branches of the Mabinogi which gives credence to the premise that magical transformation permeates the British/Welsh mythological sagas. This paper will focus on elements of magical transformation in the Book of Taliesin’s most famed mystical poem, ‘The Preideu Annwfyn (The Spoils of Annwn), and its pertinence to modern Druidic practise, to bridge the gulf between academia and the visionary, and to demonstrate the storehouse of wisdom accessible within the Taliesin material. Introduction It is the intention of this paper to examine the magical transformation properties present in the Book of Taliesin and the Preideu Annwfn. By the term ‘Magical Transformation’ I refer to the preternatural accounts of change initiated by magical means that are present within the Taliesin material and pertinent to modern practise and the assumption of various states of being. The transformative qualities of the Hanes Taliesin material is familiar to students of the OBOD, but I suggest that further material can be utilised to enhance the spiritual connection of the student to the source material of the OBOD and other Druidic systems.
