FFEDERASIWN CARNO, A

GOVERNORS’ REPORT TO PARENTS YSGOL GLANTWYMYN A word from the Chairman 24th October 2019

Dear Parents/Guardians

It is my pleasure to present the Annual Report to Parents of the Federation of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair on behalf of the governors and school staff for this year. With the support of the Welsh Government '21st Century Schools' grant, and the support of local Associations a brand-new school building has been built at Carno and was officially opened in June by AM Kirsty Williams. The building work at Ysgol Glantwymyn has now finished along with the extension to the school yard and car park.

The three schools within the Federation were very active during the year between learning about the New Curriculum, sports events, the formation of the choir, visits to various shows and Educational workshops. As we reflect on the great successes last year, we will look forward to continuing to develop the Federation. The collaboration and joint planning across the Federation sharing good practice contribute to raising standards across all three schools.

In accepting the role of Chair last September and then receiving the phone call from Estyn three weeks in provided quite a challenge. The result of the Estyn inspections however has been immensely positive, and we can all be very proud of the achievements in all three schools. As a result of the inspections we have had visitors from all over to the schools to share our good practice and we will continue to work together to deliver the new curriculum.

I would like to thank the staff for their dedication and commitment to working together demonstrating flexibility when needed and to ensure that all pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We bid farewell to Miss Manon Evans and wish her well in her new job at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd and and wish Mrs Lydia Jones and Mrs Ceris Rees a happy retirement. I would like to thank you as parents for your support. Parental involvement is essential to ensure success at schools and the governors are grateful to you all for your everready support. The academic year has been very busy and varied, and in taking advantage of the new facilities, the successes have been numerous, as you will see in the report.

As you all know we had some very sad news about Miss Elain Heledd, Assistant Headteacher at Ysgol Llanbrynmair over the summer holidays as she lost a cruel short battle to Cancer. She was a dedicated and exceptional teacher and as a parent governor from Llanbrynmair you could see that she had a great relationship with the children. Pupils all looked up to her as she had the ability to capture their imagination and her educational themes always had a lasting impression. She was a valued member of the Senior Management team within the Federation where she played a key role in sharing good practice across the three schools.

The school governors are committed to our role and responsibilities and are pleased to work with staff and parents to maintain high standards. I would also like to thank Mrs Bethan Gwawr Jones for her commitment and leadership within the federation on all levels from being in the classroom, working with , doing her office duties to sharing best practice with Schools both within and outside of the county.

I would like you to take time to read the report and reflect on the academic success and key highlights of our Federation during 2018-19.

Nia Meddins Chairman

Additionally: (a) the meetings must be held within a 25 day period; (b) the 25 day period begins on the day after receiving the petition, but does not include any days that are not school days; (c) if another meeting needs to be held due to a different petition, the 25 day period will not begin until the day after the other meeting has been held; (d) there must be enough days left in the school year to hold the meeting within the 25 day period; (e) meetings will be open to all parents of registered pupils at the school, the Headteacher and anyone else who is invited by the governing body; (f) notification of the meetings to parents must include the date, time and venue, as well as the matter or matters to be discussed For detailed information regarding statutory requirement, petitions and the process for holding a meeting, please follow this link: www.gov.wales/docs/dcells/publications/130503-statutory- guidance-parentsmeetings-en.p

In accordance with statutory rules, the prospectus is given to the parents of pupils who start full time education at the school. A copy of the prospectus is available from the school office or on the school website. School Language Policy Ysgol Glantwymyn is in a traditional Welsh area, and in accordance with Powys Education Authority’s policy, Welsh is the main teaching language of the school. Children are encouraged to speak Welsh both on the yard and during lessons with the exception of the English lessons (Years 3 – 6). Complaints Please discuss any concerns you may have with the Assistant Headteacher initially. You are also welcome to make an appointment to discuss any issues with the Headteacher. If issues are not resolved then parents should follow the guidelines outlined in the School’s Complaints Policy. This is available on the school website.

Curriculum Statement The school aims to provide a balanced curriculum in accordance with the requirements of the National Curriculum in order to stimulate the educational, emotional and social development of each individual child. The practice and procedures of the Foundation Phase are in place.

Differentiated strategies are used to develop the potential of every child to his/her full development. We aim to achieve the goals in a lively, intimate, interesting and creative way. The school policy documents can be viewed at the school in all subject areas; work plans in each subject area are also in place - in accordance with the guidelines of the National Curriculum. Pupils participate in sports as part of the curriculum and in extra-curricular activities. They also have swimming lessons. Additional information about the curriculum can be found in the school prospectus.

Action Plans

The School has a Development Plan and it is fully operational. There is a close link between the school's self-evaluation documents that are reviewed annually. Self-appraisal and School Development Plan Main School Priorities 2018-19

P1. Develop strategies and provisions for teaching and further learning in line with the new curriculum requirements. P2. Developing Pupil Voice across the school which will create an impact on the standards and environment. P3. Raise the status of the and take pride and ownership in all aspects of their social life and activities. P4.Target selected groups of pupils who need support to develop confidence with procedual / number work 4 Staff Development / Performance Management

Performance Management is the term used to describe the process of agreeing annual performance objectives involving discussions between teachers and their team leaders, Headteachers and the Governing Body. Performance management supports the work of teachers as individuals and in teams. It establishes a framework for teachers and their team leaders to agree and review priorities and objectives in the context of the school’s development plan. It motivates staff to be more effective in their teaching and subject leadership. This in turn leads to the raising of standards for the whole school.

Teaching staff set objectives with the Headteacher and review meetings take place and new objectives are identified and discussed for the forthcoming year. All teaching assistants also go through the same process as above.

The school receives an Education Improvement Grant (EIG) yearly to ensure that staff are able to access Professional Develepment. Below is an example of the training received by staff during the last academic year.

Teachers from all schools in the Bro Hyddgen Cluster got together in the Spring and Summer Terms to moderate pupils' work. The work that was being assessed included Language, Mathematics Development and Personal and Social Development for the Foundation Phase (Year 2) and English and Maths for Key Stage 2 (Year 6). The process followed ERW (South West and Central Wales Education Consortium) guidelines to ensure consistency and accuracy in terms of teacher assessments and ensuring that the appropriate levels were awarded to pupils at the end of the key stage.

Local Education Authority and ERW

During the year the school has had 2 core visits by the School Challenge Officer. The main purpose of the first visit during the Autumn Term was to discuss school performance data, self-evaluation and performance management whilst the remainder of the time focused on scrutinising the actions and monitoring progress against the school's priorities. Ysgol Glantwymyn was placed in the yellow category within the national categorisation of schools across Wales. The school has secured good levels of outcomes in Core subjects and addresses areas in need of improvement.

Eco Schools The school has received three green flags by Eco Schools to recognise the efforts of the school to recycle, re-use and reduce waste. All pupils have been a part of the Edible Mach workshops, growing fruit and vegetables in the garden. Following an environmental walk around the school grounds, the Eco committee decided to reduce paper waste by emailing letters to parents, and ensuring that the information is available on the website, as well as looking into ways of reducing the amount of water we use at the school. The ‘Criw Cymraeg’ worked hard during the year to ensure that we were awarded the Welsh Language Charter silver award. Members of the ‘Criw Cymraeg’ gave a presentation to the governors discussing what they had achieved during the year, including their connection with a Welsh School in Patagonia.

Welsh Charter The main aim of the charter is to create and increase the children’s social use of Welsh. We want to inspire our children and young people to use Welsh in every aspect of their lives. The Welsh Language Charter asks for a contribution from every member of the school community – the pupils, the school council, the staff, the parents, the governors and the community. The ‘Criw Cymraeg’ worked effectively to promote the use of the 6 welsh language throught the school and within the community and as a result the school was awarded the Silver Award and will now be working towards achieving the Gold Award in the near future.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING NEEDS (ALN) The Governor for ALN is Mrs Mary Thomas. The provision for pupils with ALN is effectively monitored by the governors, ALN Co-ordinator and Support Staff within the school. ALN provision aims to ensure that all tasks, resources and materials are differentiated in order to match work to pupils' needs. This is reflected in the work plans and any planning that is being developed at the time. We recognise able and talented children and encourage all pupils to work to their best potential through formal and informal activities. All pupils on the ALN register will be provided with an Independent Learning Plan to be reviewed with the child twice a year. The school follows the authority guidelines on how to place learners on the ALN register.

It has always been considered the ethos of the school that each child is treated as an individual; no matter their age, gender, race or disability. The school aims to help all pupils to reach their full potential by supporting them appropriately. As a school we understand the importance of effective teaching and learning and ensure the best possible experiences for all pupils in the school. We ensure that all children with disabilities have the same experiences as everyone else at school. It is possible for children with physical disabilities to have access to all parts of the building. There is also a disabled toilet in the building.
