#2: Outside Berlin Hotel, Wannsee House, Town Guide, Into next tape (4 discs) -“Walking Tour” guide- Siemens factory, heaquarters’ ruins, spot above Hitler’s bunker (interpreted by John mark Ennis and Dr. Susan Burch) #3: , Deaf/Blind House (4 discs) -Wannsee House, historical tour inside, guided by the Wannsee House director, narrating the background and event s of the Wannsee Conference (1/20/1942) Followed by Q&A by student including myself. -Deaf-Blind House (shelter) on Nosenthalstrasse (formally East Berlin,) guided tour by the house guide narrating blind and deaf/blind Jewish refugees hiding from Nazis) Ennis interpreting Gudrun (German Sign language interpreter) who translated the guide’s spoken German into spoken English. Jochen Muhs added info on Deaf-Blind Germans. Because the house’s rooms were too small, my group had to be divided into 2 small groups for tours in turn. #4: Deaf-Blind House (4 discs) -Deaf-Blind House continued #5: Wannsee School, West Berlin Club, Muh’s Lecture Pt 1 (4 discs) -Jewish Deaf school in Wannsee. Henry Florsheim recollecting his student experiences there, room by room (he later emigrated to the US) #6: Wannsee- Deaf Club, Berlin (4 discs) -Deaf Club, East Berlin- on Schönhausen Allee (once and still leading Deaf Club for East Berlin)Lectures by Deaf officers of club(they didn’t share much of their experiences under communist/ East German regime-DDR) Q&A by students #7: Prague- Castle, Cathedral, Golden Lane, Charles Bridge, Ariana Restaurant (4 discs) -Royal castle, Cathedral, Czech guide re-telling Czech history up to Nazi Occupation. -Golden lane home of Frank Kafka’s -Charles Bridge- bridge line by Royal Figure Statues -Ariance Restaurant- where Newby indulged in 4-star Czech cuisine #8: Prague- Jewish Quarter (4 discs) -Jewish Quarter- several synagogues including Moorish Temple #9: Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, Jewish Town Hall, Survivor (4 discs) -Terezin (Theresienstadt- named after Empress Thenesa of the Hapsburg Empire) -Town Hall in Jewish Quarter -lecture by hearing Jewish Czech woman who recollected growing up in Terezin . Followed by Q&A’s including myself- I asked her if she met any Deaf People in Terezin #10: Prague- Assassin- Heydrich, Prague- lunch (4 discs) -Tour of Udice, a Prague suburb, where Nazis exterminated male residents and abducted female and child residents for Czech resistance’s assassination of Reinfard Heydrich, then Governor of Czechslovakia. Guided by Elisabeth, hearing Czech survivor, interpreted by John Mark Ennis. Documentary of Udice, spoken in English with Ennis ASL interpreting. -Site of Heydrich’s assassination recollected by Elisabeth followed by the hospital site where Heydrich died. -Lunch break in native Czech restaurant recommended by Elisabeth – Czech cuisine -Site of church where the Czech assassin’s holed up and cornered by Nazis. Elisabeth narrated the events leading to the Czech’s suicide (rather than Nazi arrest) -Tour of Barandov Studios, Prague- the leading Czech studio. (Like MGM and Paramount) From silent films to today- Nazis used this often for Nazi propaganda films because it was out of allied bombing range #11: 5/2_/00 Prague- Remue Cemetery, Shlener with Guide at Restaurant, Church, Poland (4 discs) -Cemetery of 1,000 grave stones- most sacred cemetery in Prague #12: Krakow, Poland- Auschwitz, Jewish Ghetto, Schindler’s List, Shopping District (4 discs) -Site of Schindler’s office #13: 5/2_/00 Auschwitz- Barracks dedicated to Soviets, Birkenau - Hut with Bunks (4 discs) -Auschwitz death camp, including Henry Florsheim’s dedication to Deaf who died there -Birkenau (adjacent to Auschwitz) Hut with bunks, gas chambers, and death ovens. #16: 4/28/00 Krakow- Interview Part 3/3, Walk back to hotel (4 discs) -Interview with Deaf Polish man guided by Dr. Schuchman, interpreted by John Mark Ennis (Note, none of us knew Polish or Polish Sign language so Ennis gestured with the Polish man) He recollected surviving Nazi occupation of Krakow, making bombs and escaping Nazi arrest, meeting Deaf Polish Jews before they were arrested by the Nazis
