Our Friendly Drop-In is Back

Formerly known as Tea With a Twist, our Hedge End drop-in returns as Cuppa and Catch Up. The idea is exactly the same: pop into the Old School House at St John’s Road, Hedge End, for a cuppa and a chat. You’ll be greeted by our friendly team and you can meet old friends there or make new ones among the others dropping in. We’re starting Tuesday 22 June, and thereafter Cuppa and Catch Up will run on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month 10am-12 noon. Tea/coffee and biscuits are served and there will be board games, crafts and sometimes guest speakers - come along and help shape the course of this neighbourhood social group. Want to find out more, or fancy volunteering as a host? You can contact us at One Community on:

We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteers’ Week 2021 1-7 June Volunteers’ Week is a time to say thank you for the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. Join us this year by recognising the fantastic contribution your volunteers make to your organisation. One Community News

From the Chief Executive For some people life is changing quickly, they are able to go out on their own again, meet friends and family and get on with their lives. For others life as ‘normal’ is not easy, they are facing financial pressures, they have lost support and they are not sure where to go or what to do. All of us need to ensure we are able to get the right messages out to people about where they can go to get information and help for themselves or others. Making people aware of services is growing on social media as well as more traditional methods, but we need to be mindful of our audiences. If you need help with getting up to speed on any digital issue or want more people to know what you can offer, please talk to myself or any of my team. This year is going to be a different challenge to last year for all of us but there will be exciting opportunities as well. Do take a look at our training offer on the back page. As ever, take care, keep safe. Jean Roberts-Jones, Chief Executive, One Community

One Community Day Centre Re-Opens We reopened the One Community Day Centre at Pavilion On The Park on Friday 16 April after a long lockdown. The clients were thrilled to come back and some have even asked for extra days. The staff were thankful to return and it was nice for our new staff member, Lewis, to actually see how the day centre runs, as he started with One Community in January when lockdown returned. It was nice for him to see the clients at the day centre enjoying themselves, as he had only seen them at home till then. Since we returned we have been able to walk some of the clients through the lovely grounds at Fleming Park, where Pavilion on the Park is located, and we intend to do this much more as the weather improves. We are back to playing games, listening to different types of music, having the most amazing discussions and, most importantly, lifting all our spirits again.

Governance Guidance If you are an Organiser or a Committee Member then you are most likely a Trustee for your organisation and you should be aware of your responsibilities and requirements. At One Community we realise the complexities of your roles and this regular column is designed to support you with this. “Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: Directors, Board Members, Governors, Committee Members. “Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole. “Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.” From: Charity Commission /Charity trustee: what’s involved (CC3a)/: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/charity-trustee-whats-involved#find-out-more-about-being-a-trustee

The Queen’s Speech: What Charities Need to Know The first Queen’s Speech since the pandemic was always going to be low-key in terms of ceremonial proceedings, with fewer people and less grandeur. With what has felt like a lost legislative year, parliament can expect to be much busier on legislation in this next session. Thirty bills were announced in the Queen’s speech, a number of which will affect charities.

New Music Makers Keep Singing! Throughout the pandemic the New Music Makers choir from Hedge End has continued with their weekly zoom rehearsals. As well as supporting the benefits and importance of socialising throughout these strange times, they have been concentrating on familiar and new pieces, and learning about resonance, breathing exercises and posture. With Lockdown rules continuing to lift they are very much looking forward to face to face gatherings and for the new members to finally meet the rest of the choir in person as opposed to just seeing each other from the shoulders upwards! As well as recording a Virtual Christmas Concert and other pieces, which can be found on their YouTube channel, the choir is working towards performing concerts with a live audience, hopefully by the end of the year. All government guidelines will be strictly adhered to ensuring a COVID-safe environment for everyone. New members are always welcome, so if you love to sing and are looking for a friendly choir to join then please don’t hesitate in contacting them through their website: www.newmusicmakers.com

OPCC Launches Youth Website Where You can Post Your Opportunities The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) is directly responding to feedback from their Youth Commission’s Big Conversation, where young people told them they weren’t aware of much to do and needed help with accessing activities. Therefore OPCC is delighted to announce the launch of a new website called One Eighty – https://oneeighty.live. One Eighty is designed to be a vehicle that houses a directory of free and low cost activities and things for young people to do, targeted predominately at 8-15 year olds but can host activities for 15+ too. The site has been designed with Youth Commission members, who have said they want to be able to filter by area and activity, and to have as much detail as possible, for example how to get there and what to expect. So the OPCC is looking to their partners to populate the site with all the open access and available opportunities you are running (including volunteering), to ensure that young people see the page as valuable and something to revisit - they will be able to ‘like’ their favourites. The site will be live 365 days a year but traffic is expected to be at its peak in the school holidays. The OPCC will promote the site and highlight activities through standalone Instagram and Facebook accounts, and if

This Month’s Top Tip: Check Your Eligibility

Tailoring Your Application: In a similar way that a generic CV is unlikely to attract the attention of any employer, generic sounding applications for funding are unlikely to persuade trustees to part with their cash! It is worth taking time to research the values and objectives of the funding body you are applying to and tailor your application accordingly. A good proposal would mirror the language of the funder whilst making sure that your organisation’s culture is clear and concise. It’s important that you pay careful attention to the ways in which the funder defines its mission as well as the language it uses to describe beneficiaries.

Funding Finder Service To help your organisation find available grants specifically tailored to a particular project or area of work, non-profit groups in Hampshire can access a free tailored search to help you discover what’s available. This service is provided by Voluntary Action on behalf of the Hampshire CVS Network. To find out more please visit: www.bvaction.org.uk/funding-finder
