CHURCH NEWS

A Message from the Rector Charles Roberts My dear friends, I don’t know whether you enjoy looking at old photographs! The other day Julie and I discovered an old album of holiday photos taken in the summer of 1980. Mostly these were of a visit my parents made to see us in South Africa and I remarked that the elderly man in the photo (my father) would have been younger then, than I am now! Terrifying! Time does go by, as they say, and February is the month I always consider my anniversary month for our time here. According to my diary I began work in the parishes on the 9th February and was licensed by Bishop William of on the 24th. That was in 1998, so I have as it were come of age finally after 21 years. Do I get the key of the door? Perhaps not, but it is a sobering thought that around half my working life has been in this wonderful place with all its joys and challenges. I’m also pleased to report that a significant number of you are still here and may remember those early days too!

Anniversaries are those markers that help us to stop for a moment of reflection and take stock. They also might draw us to consider something specific. For many the most significant date in February is the 14th, traditionally St Valentine’s Day. The actual Valentine has a dubious history and seems to offer very little in the way of romance. Probably a Roman priest or bishop, he was martyred in the third century under the Emperor Claudius. More likely is the custom of choosing a partner during an ancient Roman festival in February, or perhaps if we turn to Chaucer he tells us of the way birds pair on the 14th February. While most of these things seem to be ‘red herrings’ (excuse the mixed metaphors), and without a single church dedicated to this saint in , nevertheless the notion that ‘love is in the air’ remains,

And that reminds us once again of the gospel imperative to love. Usually by Febru- ary all the New Year resolutions have gone out of the window, but perhaps by the time we get to month #2 we can reform those early ambitions with a pledge to just love a little more. Love of God and love of neighbour was Jesus’ mantra, and it was the byword of every Jew in the first century. The ‘schema’ was that very text quoted throughout the day, and worn by the orthodox Jew on forehead or forearm in a phylactery. We may of course give Valentine a brief nod (and thereby give the card, flower or chocolate industry a little boost), and why not, but by going a little deeper we place ourselves in a situation where we can do rather more good. Loving our neighbour changes the world, loving God changes everything! Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts.

Parish Electoral Roll Update

In 2019, we have to prepare a completely new electoral roll for St Andrew’s Church. Joining the roll is a practical symbol of commitment to our Church; there is no time or financial commitment involved. The Church has been here for hundreds of years as a place of worship and a focus for the community and we hope very much that you want to be part of its future.

Further details & an application form can be found on a sheet inserted into this copy of the magazine, or obtained from St Andrew’s Church or from the Electoral Roll Officer, Alison Hoddell, on 332421.

PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY

Living God, you are at work in so many ways, if we could only see it. Forgive us for everything that blinds us to the breadth of your activity. Open our eyes to your presence, our minds to your truth, and our souls to your Spirit, that we may glimpse you in everyday life, and in the affairs of the world. And at this time of uncertainty, may you be the rock on which our life is grounded. In Christ’s name. Amen

Chew Stoke Parish Council – Planning Applications Information The Parish Council is responsible for providing a response on behalf of the parish to all plan- ning applications submitted and considered by BANES in relation to the parish of Chew Stoke. The Parish Council’s response can often influence the determination of a planning consent by BANES. Approximately 25 planning applications are submitted to BANES every year in the parish of Chew Stoke. When considering how to respond to planning applications, the Parish Council’s main objective is to preserve and maintain the rural character of the village whilst trying to meet the changing needs and development requirements of a 21st century community. The Parish Council would like to highlight a number of planning related issues that it considers important for applicants to consider before submitting a planning application :

18 Planning application advice – The Parish Council is not able to provide planning advice to parishoners. The Parish Council recommends that applicants takes professional advice when submitting a planning application and consults planning information contained on the BANES website. Pre-application advice can be obtained from BANES. Applicants are also referred to the Planning Portal website for advice on submitting planning applica- tions : www.planningportal.co.uk Chew Valley Neighbourhood Plan – The CVNP specifies planning policy specifically relating to the Chew Valley. A copy of the plan can be found on the BANES website. Applicants should have regard to these policies when submitting application. A particular policy worth noting relates to parking requirements for new developments. Green Belt – Chew Stoke is washed over by the green belt. Specific planning policies apply to green belt status and regard should be had for policies restricting development in green belt areas. Large extensions to existing dwellings can be refused when they are considered to have a detrimental effect on the openness of the green belt and/or represent a disproportionate addi- tion over and above the size of the original dwelling. Careful attention should be given to the relevant policies when considering extending a dwelling. Please refer to the planning policy pages on the BANES website for further information. Conservation Area status – Parts of the village are in a conservation area. Specific planning policies apply to conservation area status and regard should be had for policies restricting development in conservation areas. Please refer to the planning policy pages on the BANES website for further information. http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/sites/default/files/sitedocuments/Planning-and-Building-Control/ Planning-Policy/Local-Plan/Maps/05_CHEWSTOKE.pdf
