History relates that, when the Church of purchased the Abbey Ruins in 1907, it appointed the mediaeval archaeologist, Frederick Bligh- Bond, to undertake excavations. He lived at Abbots Leigh for Fourteen years. The property was later owned by Montagu Phippen Porch who became Lady Randolph Churchill’s third husband and stepfather to Winston Churchill, who visited the property a number of times.
