Iowa Jersey Today- November 2011 5 Iowa Jersey Cattle Club Annual Summer Meeting 2011 The regular meeting of the Iowa Jersey Cattle Club was held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Brian and Heidi Lantzky’s family farm. There were 20 members in attendance and 3 visitors. Following a delicious pot luck meal and welcome from Heidi Lantzky and Blessing from Brian Lantzky, the business meeting was called to order by President Jeff Holtz at 1:00 pm. There was no President or Vice President report – March meeting minutes were printed in the Spring IJT, and David Kunde moved to accept the minutes as printed. Ron Kaiser second. Motion carried. Treasurer’s report was given. Balance on hand in checking is $ 1268.08 , Scholarship fund (UBS account) is $ 11,379.88 and Convention savings account $ 8337.05. Nathan Cline moved to approve the report as read. Brian Lantzky second. Motion carried. Club Business: Iowa State Fair: This year’s open show judge is Jeff Core. Next year’s judge is Dean Dohle, Herby Lutz or Robert Yoeman. ISU DSC agreed to do the Boulevard of Breeds again. Jeff Holtz will serve as Grand and Reserve Champion Escorts this year. One more volunteer will be needed and will probably be selected from exhibitors at the State Fair. A heifer statue will again be given to the Junior Champion of the Junior and Open Show. The Junior Show judge will be Garritt DeBruin, who is also judging the Open Brown Swiss Show. Eric Lang asked for donations to go toward the PDCA meal- so that the money previously donated for PDCA can go fully to trophies, etc for the your shows. He encouraged us to mention this to businesses we work with daily. Their budget is $3000 and they are part way there to date. Brian Lantzky moved that the IJCC donated $100. Nathan Cline second. Motion carried. There are several schedule changes this year- Friday night will include the Kittie Kattle Kapers, Celebrity Milking Contest and a Butter sculpting contest in honor of the 100th year Anniversary of the Butter Cow. Thursday after the youth show will be the Novice show at 1 pm. All entry areas are down, except dairy which is up- so be prepared for some tight spaces. State Sale Wrap-up: Pot of Gold sale was discussed. It went well for the fi rst year. Brian suggested looking into Genomic testing possible animals for future sales. There was some discussion on whether it would be important, fi nancially feasible or if animals would then solely be selected on those merits. Animals would need to be submitted in the late fall/early winter to allow testing results and selection to take place. Heidi moved to move the decision to committee. Nathan Cline second. Motion carried. Jennifer will set up a separate account for the Pot O Gold fund with 25% of the consignments gross ($975). Eric Lang spoke of the plans to include Jersey cattle in the Ayrshire fall sale (September 10th, Dubuque Co. fairgrounds). He encouraged the group to approve the inclusion of Jerseys in the sale and earn the same 3% commission as we do from the spring sale. Volunteers would again be needed to help prior and during the sale. There was much discussion about whether we should consider hosting a high volume sale similar to Illinois or alternate hosting it with them to capitalize more on the many Iowa cattle the leave the state for those sales in IL and WI. It was also noted many animals come back to Iowa from those sale. The commission is lower and the animals don’t have to be broke to lead. Jeff Holtz said he would look into the possibility of doing that. Ron Kaiser was concerned about the quality of the sale, but Eric and Jeff reassured the group that the quality is no less than the spring; producers are just looking to get animals that are ready to milk through the fall. Lisa Holtz moved to join the Ayrshire fall sale this fall and revisit the idea next spring. Brian Lantzky second. Motion carried. Jeff Holtz volunteered to be the Jersey chair for the fall sale. The need is mainly Fresh young cows and springing heifers. There is not as much of a market in the fall sale for show calves, short-bred heifers or anything not ready to make some money milking. The 2011 Sale commission was $1782.25 ($200 was subtracted for hiring a night crew since there were no Jersey volunteers), 2010 was $1860.75. AJCA Awards: Just to get you thinking, those awards will be due in January 2011. Early suggestions??? Master Breeder- Joe Lyon, Meritorious Service-, Distinguished Service-, Young Jersey Breeder- Jennifer Zumbach, Michael Kunde. We can nominate as many as we would like. Iowa Jersey Today- Please feel free to make suggestions to Jennifer for improvements on the magazine. Please send news items- like weddings, babies, etc. Ron Kaiser asked to include more stories of producers around Iowa. National Convention: Still have items remaining. Keep these items in mind for gifts throughout the year. Heidi offered to post some of these items on Craig’s list to maybe get more people interested in purchasing them. Jennifer will ship them. Jennifer will also get an inventory list. 2011 State Jersey Award: Eric Metzger will receive the award this year and a heifer Jersey calf from Kevin and Mariselle Cline. They (or Golden Dream Jersey’s) will receive 3 free IJT ½ page ads for their donation. IJCC Memorial Scholarship: Jordan Hanson was chosen to receive this $500 award. 2011 Jersey Princess: Kendra Core was chosen as the Iowa Jersey Princess. She will be eligible to run in the Iowa Dairy Princess and National Jersey Queen Pageants. 3 Judges for Youth awards were: Daniel Kunde, Patricia Horst and Abby Cline. Jeff outlined announcements at bottom of agenda Brian and Heidi spoke to the group briefl y, explaining the farm and cows, then people toured the Hei-Bri Jerseys farm. Open Show Grand Champion Open Show Junior Champion Junior Show Junior Champion Junior Show Grand Champion Iowa Jersey Today- November 2011 19 DAVID BRANDAU RECOGNIZED WITH JERSEY AWARD FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE Reynoldsburg, Ohio, June 29, 2011—David L. Brandau, Wilton, Wis., received the AJCA-NAJ Award for Meritorious Service on June 24, 2011 during the annual meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc. in Wisconsin Dells. This award is given annually to a living individual who, in the joint opinion of the Boards of Directors of the national Jersey organizations, has made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Jersey breed and the livelihood of Jersey owners in the United States through research, education, development, marketing, or other signifi cant activities of the allied dairy industry. David grew up on his family’s farm near Wilton, Wis., as a third-generation breeder of Registered Jerseys™. He started at the Jersey organizations in July of 1981 as Equity Specialist with National All-Jersey Inc. and later added responsibilities Calvin Covington, David and Cathy Brandau as AJCA-NAJ Area Representative for the Upper Midwest region. Brandau’s work focused on educating producers and cooperatives on the benefi ts of high-component milk and the need for equitable milk pricing to improve cheese yields. A key part of this was to enlist the fi nancial support for this effort through the Equity check-off. “The Jersey breed would not be enjoying the success it is today without people like David on the front line gaining fi nancial support for the program,” said Calvin Covington, former Executive Secretary and CEO of the USJersey organizations. A major victory occurred when the fi ve Upper Midwest Federal Milk Marketing Orders implemented multiple component pricing. David played a key role in bringing all the major cooperatives and dairy organizations in the area together to discuss equitable milk pricing. An excerpt of the Upper Midwest fi nal decision dated August 2, 1995 is still posted in Brandau’s home offi ce. David and his wife Cathy reside at their farm in southwest Wisconsin and have two grown sons. He continues to support Jersey business and milk marketing development through his membership in the Wisconsin Jersey Breeders Association and independent consulting. KEVIN & CARI KNAPP RECEIVE NATIONAL YOUNG JERSEY BREEDER AWARD Reynoldsburg, Ohio, June 27, 2011—Kevin and Cari Knapp, Larchwood, Iowa, received one of six Young Jersey Breeder Awards given by the American Jersey Cattle Association in ceremonies on June 22, 2011, during the association’s Annual Meetings in Wisconsin Dells. The Young Jersey Breeder Award is presented to individuals or couples who are at least 28 years old and under the age of 40 on January 1 of the year nominated, who merit recognition for their expertise in dairy farming, breeding Jersey cattle, participation in programs of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc., and leadership in Jersey and other dairy and agriculture organizations. The Knapps are the perfect example of what can happen when city meets country. Kevin worked with and owned dairy cattle off and on until he met Cari, who managed a 320-cow dairy herd. Cari received her bachelor’s degree in dairy science from South Dakota State University. When the couple married in 2002, they blended their knowledge and experiences to expand their herd to 50 cows. “Kevin and Cari have a very strong interest in the genetic development of their herd and have the results to show that it is working,” said Eric Lyon, Lyon Jerseys, Toledo, Iowa, in a letter supporting their nomination. Today’s herd consists of 95 cows in milk with a 2010 AJCA lactation average of fr ont: Erica, Angie, Tara and Nathan 19,202 lbs. milk, 928 lbs. fat, 673 lbs. protein with 2,313 lbs. cheese yield per cow. The couple has set back: Jerry Spielman, Cari, Logan & Kevin a goal for their REAP herd to be at 20,000 lbs. milk with 5.0% fat and 4.0% protein. As for the future of Knapp Time Dairy, Kevin and Cari have considered different avenues offered by being a Registered Jersey™ farm, including bottling their own milk under the All-Jersey® label. Kevin and Cari also hope to instill the same love and excitement they have for Jerseys into their fi ve children, as they feel there is no better way to raise a family and teach valuable life lessons than on a Jersey dairy farm.

22 IowaJunior Jersey Show- Today Senior- November Champion 2011 selection -Iowa State Fair Duffy Over the Years- A Timeline July 29, 1929 -- Norma Duffi eld Stong, known as Duffy, is born in Nashville, the daughter of Benton J. Stong, a newspaper reporter, and his wife, Elsa. Her grandmother, Bertha Clark, was a founder of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Her uncle, Phil Stong, was author of the book “State Fair,” which was the basis of the Rodgers and Hammerstein fi lm musical of the same name. Norma spent her childhood between Knoxville, Tenn. and Keosauqua, Iowa where her paternal grandmother lived. 1947 – Enrolls in Iowa State University to study animal science. 1949 – Begins dating G. Joe Lyon and marries him the next year. 1951 – Joe and Duffy graduate from Iowa State University and move to Toledo, Iowa and join his parents and brother Howard’s family in the dairy operation. 1960 – Duffy sculpts her fi rst butter cow for the Iowa State Fair. 1963 – Duffy appears on “To Tell the Truth” television game show. 1984 – She appears on “Today” show, “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night With David Letterman” where she shows up with a small Cheddar-cheese version of her butter cow “to make it easier to carry.” Also in 1984 -- Duffy expands her butter sculpture repertoire at the Iowa State Fair with a life-size sculpture of Garth Brooks. Over the years, she sculpts John Wayne, a diorama of “Peanuts” comic-strip characters, a Harley- Davidson motorcycle and a reproduction of “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. 1997 – Duffy suffers a stroke, but recovers in time to sculpt a butter cow and a 6-foot likeness of Elvis Presley that fairgoers line up around the building to see. 1998 – B. Green writes a book on Duffy’s life, entitled “The Butter Cow Lady.” In 1999-- Duffy tackles her most ambitious project: Her own rendition of the biblical story of the Last Supper, featuring disciples around a table while Jesus stands at the head of the table with his arms stretched out, looking toward the heavens. 2002 – Duffy is honored by the Iowa State Dairy Association at the Iowa State Fair by being presented the 2002 Ralph Keeling Dairy Leadership Award. Then Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge notes, “Duffy is a tireless promoter and industry enthusiast. She is an Iowa State Fair icon as she has sculpted one of the Fair’s biggest attractions for 43 years.” In Memoriam 2004 – Duffy and her husband G. Joe receive Iowa State Fair’s Outstanding Lifetime Accomplishment Award. 2006 – Duffy retires from sculpting the Butter Cow and creates a bronze sculpture of “Jersey Jewel” for the entrance to ISU’s new milking facilities. 2007 – Barack Obama seeks her endorsement while campaigning in Iowa for the Democratic presidential nomination. She produces a 60- second radio campaign commercial for him. “He knows our kids need opportunity here in Iowa so they don’t have to leave home to follow their dreams,” she says in the ad. “Even if that dream is 500 pounds of butter shaped like a cow.” June 26, 2011 – Norma Duffi eld “Duffy” Stong Lyon passes away of an apparent stroke. A Presidential Tribute: Hearing of her Duffy Lyon’s passing, President Barack Obama issued this statement. “I was sad to learn that Duffy Lyon passed away. She was a wonderful woman, who loved her family, her home of Iowa, and the many years she spent living and working on her family’s dairy farm. After almost fi ve decades carving cows out of butter for the state fair, her sculptures became not just an attraction, but a symbol of all the cherished traditions of the place she called home. Her support made a real difference during the campaign, and I’ll always be grateful to her for standing with me. My thoughts are with Duffy’s husband, Joe, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And I’m glad to hear that come this August, the butter cow will rise again, with the tradition continuing in Duffy’s fond memory,” Obama said. She would give advice, but she was very supportive. I think she’d just give me a big hug, probably,” said butter sculptor Pratt, fi ghting tears. Norma “Duffy” Lyon died on June 26. Pratt was her apprentice for 15 years. This year’s surprise sculpture is a recreation of the 1911 sculpture, which featured a farm boy with a cow and its calf. Pratt added a girl to the sculpture – a young Duffy Lyon, holding butterfl y. A paper butterfl y was given to Lyon by her future husband while they were courting. This is the fi rst year the sculpture was placed on a turntable, which made the project more challenging for Pratt. “This is a secret that I let leek, but the original cow was not all the way around. The back of it’s not done. So because of the spinning turntable, you could see it from every single angle, and every single nook and cranny,” said Pratt, who started the sculpture on July 25. The cows in the farm scene are different than the robust ones Duffy is famous for sculpting “Duffy really prided herself on trying to make it a show cow, so a cow that had all the sought-after features of a really grand champion dairy cow. In 1911, the artist was more shooting for a farm scene that would depict farm life in Iowa in that day. Cows were smaller then,” Pratt said. In 1911, the scene was sculpted by John Karl Daniels, a Norwegian immigrant from the Twin Cities. This year’s sculpture was kept a secret, which Pratt said was fun, but challenging. “I have a very hard time keeping secrets,” she said. Reprinted from the Des Moines Register. IInn MemoriamMemoriam Norma Duffi eld “Duffy” Stong Lyon, 81, of Toledo, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. A Memorial Mass was held Friday, July 1, 2011 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Tom Braak and Deacon Joe Behounek offi ciating. There was a luncheon following the Mass at the St. Patrick Parish Center in Tama. Norma was born on July 29, 1929 in Nashville, TN, the daughter of Elsa (Walburn) and Benton J. Stong. Norma spent her childhood between Knoxville, TN and Keosauqua, IA where her paternal grandmother lived. Norma realized her artistic abilities when she was a student at Iowa State University winning fi rst place in a snow sculpture contest catching the attention of Christian Petersen, resident sculptor, who offered her a chance to take his courses. Her training in sculpture along with a degree in Animal Husbandry laid the foundation for her title, “The Butter Cow Lady”. Norma had the pleasure of sculpting the butter cow for the Iowa State Fair for 46 years, as well as for many other venues throughout the United States and Canada. Her permanent sculptures are the cow and calf at the intersection of Highway 63 and 30 and the “Jersey Jewel” at the Iowa State University Dairy Farm. The Iowa State Fair runs deep in Duffy’s family. Her great grandfather served on the Iowa State Fair Board and her uncle, Phil Stong, wrote the book, State Fair that was later made into three movies. The Lyon family has had a long-standing tradition of showing Jerseys at the Iowa State Fair since 1931. Iowa State University is also where she met her husband, G. Joe Lyon. They were married July 22, 1950 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames. Shortly after graduating from college, Joe and Norma joined his parents and Brother Howard’s family in dairy farming. There, they raised their nine children. Duffy’s family was devoted to farm living. They were involved with many farm and dairy related activities. Duffy received many awards for her leadership in promoting the dairy industry. She was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. Duffy is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joe; her brother, Ben Stong of Oran, Iowa; her children, Emily Hansen (George) of River Falls, WI, Mark Lyon (Bonnie) of Newberry, SC, Eric Lyon (Theresa) of Toledo, Michelle Juhl (Tim) of Greene, Greg Lyon (Kathy) of Wilton, Valerie Lyon-Neylon (Kevin) of Perth, Australia, Lori Hartman (Jon) of Phoenix, AZ, Kurt Lyon (Jane) of DePere, WI and Doug Lyon (Steve Loucks) of Minneapolis, MN. She is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, Jeff Testa, Abbie Testaberg, Josh Lyon, Samantha Werts, Rachel Matuzak, Tom Lyon, Tyrel Lyon, Ted Lyon, Erin Lyon, Todd Lyon, Allison Juhl, Jacob Juhl, Lucas Lyon, Lyndsey Lyon, Oakley Lyon, Logan Lyon, Lakaya Lyon, David Cruise, Gavan Cruise, Haydn Cruise, Kyle Hartman, Sam Hartman and Ellen Lyon; and fi ve great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents. A memorial fund has been established.

Burial was at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Dorothy was born July 4, 1931, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Ray and Mildred Beem. At one year of age she went to live with her grandparents, Minnie and Walter Uhl in Brooklyn, Iowa. They raised her to adulthood and she graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1948. On June 1, 1948, she was united in marriage to Maynard Lang. He survives as do four children born to that marriage, John (friend Catherine Lamb), twins, Craig (Mary) and Christine Turpin (Tom), and Eric (Nicole Schlinger); eight grandchildren, Suzanne Turpin Upton (Ian), Sarah Lang, Stephen Turpin, Jessica Lang Bloomberg (Justin), Gavin Lang, Chase Lang (Sylvona), Dane Lang, Cade Lang; & fi ve great-grandchildren, Berkeley, Griffi n & Parker Upton & Carsynn & Cael Lang. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Walter Beem; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Lang. Dorothy was a long time 4-H leader, volunteer at Brookhaven Nursing Home (now Brooklyn Community Estates) and Brooklyn Activity Center. She was a member of the Madison Church of Christ and a full participant in their many activities. She always supported her children in all their school, 4-H and church activities and she was a full partner in the family dairy operation, keeping all the books and doing payroll until just a few years ago. Dorothy’s special request was that the only fl owers at her time of passing be fl owers from one’s garden or wildfl owers from along the Iowa roadside. Memorial donations may be made to the Madison Church of Christ, Brooklyn Activity Center or Brooklyn Community Estate. Online condolences may be extended to the family at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.
