CHURCH NEWS

A Message from the Rector Charles Roberts

My dear friends, 100 Days Welcome back (if you’ve been on holiday!), and welcome to the start of another academic year for our children, young students and teachers. September is often the month for a reality check, to get our feet back on the ground and start thinking about Christmas, even though I dare say the shops will beat us to it every time!! But there is much to be done before then, and I want to mention two very different ele- ments that might be helpful. The first moves us towards this year’s Remembrance Sunday. On the 4th August 1918 King George V called the nation to a National Day of Prayer when he led both Houses of Parliament into St Margaret’s Church to pray for peace. Exactly 100 days later the Armistice was signed. What this illustrates to me is not only a very open and courageous piece of Christian leadership by the King, but also the power of prayer. We all know the dictum PUSH – pray until something hap- pens. It seems to me that when a nation prays together something does indeed happen. So it is that our Archbishop has called us all to join him in praying for peace, hope and reconciliation over that 100 day period between now and 11th No- vember in this centenary year. If you want some inspiration there is a prayer guide on the website ‘Remembrance 100’ and I commend it to you. On a different tack (although definitely an answer to prayer!) we will be celebrating as a Group the reopening of Church at the end of the month (see the sepa- rate notice). After three years of hard work and serious dedication the church now has a new roof, new heating and lighting, a kitchen, loads of social space, an exten- sion housing a loo and storage, and level access to the building. It’s been a challeng- ing project and certainly the biggest in the Group so far, but it means that St Michael’s is fit for purpose for the next generation and that is a great legacy. I am personally so proud and immensely grateful to so many people who have been involved in the project. It’s been a real labour of love and I know many of you have joined us in praying our way through it all, so thank you for supporting a project where God has once again achieved the apparently impossible. The choice was sim- ple enough three years ago – to get the job done somehow, or lock the doors in silent surrender. I’m so pleased we went for it! Everyone needs a little PUSH some- times. Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts.

12 Our Associate Priest Sandy Munday writes:

Recently we went to a friend’s wedding reception in . It is intriguing to find such a concentration of various beliefs in a fairly small and very English town, which has become a meeting place for a whole range of different beliefs originating from all over the world. As human beings we are rooted in the land and physical things. Many people admit to a “spiritual” dimension as well, even if some are suspicious of organised “religion”. There do seem to be places which are “awesome”. They make us reflect. The Christian presence at Glastonbury goes back to the fourth century at least, when a monastery of British (Celtic) monks lived there. In Orthodox tradition it is believed that Saint Aristobulos, one of the disciples sent out by Jesus himself to preach to the whole world, was missionary Bishop of Britain, based at Glastonbury. Both the British and Saxon monks maintained close links to the desert monasteries of Egypt and Palestine. Saint David of Wales, who extended the monastery at Glastonbury in the sixth century, had been ordained Bishop by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Following the Synod of Whitby (664) the eastern customs followed by the Celtic and early Saxon churches were replaced by Roman customs. The monks of Glastonbury adopted the more relaxed Rule of Saint Benedict, which required the monks not only to pray but to spend a large part of their time working with their hands. They adopted all the latest agricultural methods and became very successful farmers. They drained the Levels and changed much of the layout of the countryside for miles around the Abbey. We walk on hallowed ground!

Have a good September! With best wishes, Sandy

SCHOOL NEWS

Chew Stoke Church School celebrat- ed 300 years as a village primary school with a special tea party and a commemorative song. Written and composed especially for the occasion by parent, Dr Ruth Donlevy, the pu- pils delighted parents and visitors from the whole school community, with their singing of ‘Look Back in Time’, accompanied by violins, cel- los, flutes and handbells. Among the special visitors at the tea party were Archbishop Albert, the Archbishop of Central Africa, Derek Hollomon dressed in costume as Thomas Bilbie of the famous local Bilbie Bell family. The Bilbie Foundation have recently restored the ancient school bell at Chew Stoke, which is rung by the youngest pupils in the school to sound the end of the school day. Pupils and staff had fun dress- ing as historical characters from the past 300 years for the event. Chew Stoke Church School Trust has presented the School with new iron gates to com- memorate the 300 years. Pictured: Pupils from Chew Stoke, Headteacher Ben Hewett, Archbishop Albert & Thomas Bilbie (Derek Hollomon) Bishop Ruth led the 300th Anniversary celebration The school was delighted to welcome the Bishop of , Ruth Worsley to its 300th Birthday Celebration Service at St Andrew’s Church. On a sweltering hot Sunday, Bishop Ruth led pupils past and present in a reflective service celebrating 300 years of teaching and learning at the primary school. During the service Bishop Ruth reflected on the thousands of children who have passed through the school and on the dedication of all the teachers and staff who have worked there. The Bishop listened to the School Choir perform ‘Power in me’ and ‘Halleluja’ and to the children read Psalm 139. Bishop Ruth presented headteacher Ben Hewett, with a plaque from the Diocese of Bath and Wells to celebrate the anniversary. Chew Stoke Church School is the second oldest primary school within the Dio- cese of Bath and Wells. After the service, Bishop Ruth visited the school for refreshments and to dedicate a Crab Apple tree in the school Spiritual Garden. The tree is in memory of Teaching Assistant, Theophila Lewis, who worked at the school from 1999 to 2010 and who sadly passed away in 2011. Theophila’s family were present at the dedication. Pictured: Bishop Ruth presenting the plaque to Ben Hewett.

18 Beloved teacher retires After 38 years of dedicated teaching at Chew Stoke Church School, Angela Hurford has retired. Angela started at the school in 1980 and has taught over 1000 pupils, which includes the grandchildren of former pupils! Angela has been deputy head at the school, as well as head of Literacy & Music, she has played the piano in nearly every school morning worship and has played at countless school church services over the years. Ensuring the school is at the centre of the community has always been close to Angela’s heart; many of the links that the school has built over the years with the village has been down to her. Angela celebrated her retirement with a farewell party for family and friends, held at the school. Suzanne MacDonald from the Diocese of Bath & Wells presented Angela with a plaque to commemorate her years at the school. Angela will be sadly missed by the whole school community.

NEWS ABOUT CHEW STOKE SCOUTS AND CUBS In July, Chew Stoke Scouts and Cubs went camping for a weekend at the Scout site in . They enjoyed activities such as archery, crate stacking and hiking though out of everything the most fun seemed to be had enjoying the freedom to play in the woods which provid- ed a welcome break from the scorching summer sun. Everyone camped in tents, ate together and helped to collect firewood for Saturday night's barbecue. Those who were interested were even treated to watching the England football match against Sweden despite being in the middle of a field thanks to the wonders of mobile technology! The two groups meet each week during term time in Chew Stoke and Chew Magna respectively enjoying activities both indoors and out - during the last term this has included kayaking, cycling, fire lighting, clay modelling, ball games, hiking and working towards badges in athletics, home safety and entertainment. There are currently spaces available in the Scout troop which is open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. For further info please contact:: Ian Tucker on 07837 161649.

Lord of all, thank you for every kind of harvest we enjoy: food from the land and the sea, the harvest of factory and workshop, research and creative arts. Bless all those who work to provide these harvests. Bless too those who are beginning new phases of their lives, whether in school, universities or work situations, that in time they will reap a good harvest from their work. In Christ’s name, Amen.

We raised over £1500 and grateful thanks must go to everybody who contributed and helped on such a hot day, but especially to Julie and Malcolm Taylor who welcomed us all into their lovely garden.

Our Annual Members Show in July went well and we had a goodly number of entries in nearly all classes except broad beans. The lovely hot weather did have its wicked way with the number of entries into the fruit and vegetable sections. The floral displays once again took pride of place with Pat Peel winning the cup and Kate Habbakuk and Pat joint winners of the members choice cup. Kate's display of whiskery blue and silver flowers and foliage in a Wiskers cat food tin was delightful. The overall winner this year was Ann Holloman with Pat Peel entering the most classes. If you were around Church Rd on a sunny Saturday afternoon in August, you would have seen a quintessential English scene; ladies and gentlemen in colourful summer dresses playing Boules and Croquet and then sitting in the shade to enjoy a cream tea. Our thanks must go to Mary and Jeff Dowson who hosted the WIs 95th birthday celebration in their lovely garden. Preparations are in hand for our annual cake stall at the Harvest Home and also in Sep- tember we start our Autumn season of meetings at 7.30pm on the 19th when we wel- come Martin Horler (in full livery I understand) to talk on The History of the Royal Mail. Looking forward to catching up with all members and visitors if they wish to join us. FFI contact Jan 01275 472600 or Hazel 01275 332812

Important: Changes to NHS flu vaccination programme this year

This year, NHS England has recommended the use of two different types of flu vaccine for different patient groups during the 2018/19 winter season. This is to en- sure patients receive the most suitable vaccine that will give them the best protection against flu. Patients aged 18 – 65 years who are clinically ‘at risk’ from flu, including patients with diabetes, COPD and pregnant women, will be offered the quadrivalent vaccine (QIV). This vaccine will be available in September. This year, patients aged 65 years and over will be offered the adjuvanted trivalent vaccine (aTIV). This vaccine will be available slightly later than usual, in October. This is the case for all GP practices in the country. NHS England’s advice is for all patients aged 65 years and over to wait for the appropriate aTIV vaccine to be available so they have optimum flu cover. If you are a patient at Chew Medical Practice and in either of the above patient groups, your vaccine has been ordered for you. Please contact the surgery on 01275 332 420 to book your vaccination appointment. For convenience, Chew Medical Practice will be running two Saturday morning clin- ics in September and October soon after the initial delivery of both types of vaccine.
