NOTESTOTHE CONDUCTOR: Peter I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) completed the 1812 Overture in 1880. The work was premiered in Moscow in 1882. This arrangement opens with the slow chorale-like theme, which opens the original overture. Extend all notes for their full value throughout this opening section, carefully balancing the woodwind section. The brass entrance should begin quietly. Work for an even crescendo in measure 11 on the eighth notes. Be certain the snare drum is clearly heard in measure 23. Carefully articulate the moving eighth notes, and gradually crescendo on the repeat starting at measure 25. The low brass and low woodwind melody at measure 49 should be quite loud and full, reminding young players not to overblow. The Bass Line Reinforcement part covers the bass line of the entire piece, and is written in the baritone range. lt can be played by any bass clef instrument or transposed to treble clef, if desired. Use this part to reinforce the bass line if needed.
