NEWSLETTER #66 - 2008-09 REAL COMPETITORS http://www.cybersportsusa.com/hooptactics/hooptactics.asp Ernie Woods, HoopTactics.com

Real competitors are those players that come to play every time they step on the court. They are a team’s hardest workers - constantly improving. They are not the type of player that screams at teammates or officials or kick trash cans after the game. They are the type that is determined and just plain enjoys playing. Competitors are those players that players love to play with - not against, spectators love to watch, and coaches love to coach.

Real competitors are hard to find. Legendary Coach John Wooden once said that “If you have one competitor on your squad you will be successful. If you have two you will be competing for the conference title and with three a national title.” He had no idea what four or five competitors on a single team would be like since he had never witnessed it.

Real competitors view adversity as a challenge not as a detriment. In trying situations, they compete and work hard to over come it rather than get frustrated or angry. Michael Jordan is a classic example of a real competitor. He competed every night despite the fact that he was facing the opponent’s best defenders, double teams and even triple teams. Despite constantly being held and grabbed, pushed and shoved, he rarely ever complained to the officials or lost control of his actions. Instead he accepted the challenge and was more motivated to succeed. When Michael Jordan stepped on the court he was bound and determined to be successful no matter what the opponents threw at him.

Real competitors make their teammates better. They are not successful at the expense of their teammates. They do not gripe or complain about their teammates’ lack of skills and abilities. They are helpful not only in improving their teammates skills but more importantly their confidence. Did you know while playing for the Chicago Bulls, in order to make his teammates better, Michael Jordan scrimmaged with the second string during practices?

Competitors are “Erasers.” After bad calls or turnovers, rather than griping or complaining, they hustle back on defense to make a defense stop. They are fully aware of the fact that the only turnovers that hurt a team are the ones upon which the opponent score. If/when the opponent does not score after a then, no matter how bad, that turnover is erased! Xavier University - Men's - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 - (887) WE ARE XU REAL COMPETITORS Competitors don’t have to look at the score board to know the score. Winning is certainly important, but how it is achieved is more important. To them the most satisfaction and pleasure comes in playing the game, not with the final game score. They know that when they are passing, shooting, rebounding and playing solid defense, the scoreboard will take care of itself. They play every play in a game as if it was the last play of the game. After the game, regardless of the score, they are satisfied because they gave their absolute best effort.

How do you identify competitors? A simple test for competitiveness is to place a player with the worst players and have them play against the best players. In this situation, do they accept the challenge and give it their best in rallying their lesser skilled teammates into competing against the stronger team? Or, do they complain, sulk and give a less than their best effort because they are over matched and not playing with the stronger group?

JOHN MAXWELL - TALENT IS NEVER ENOUGH John Maxwell’s, Talent is Never Enough has been making its way around the basketball offices over the past month. A rcent release in a series of over a dozen books on leadership and organization, this book is very easily adaptable to the coaching profession.

From BarnesandNoble.com: Talent is "often overrated and frequently misunderstood," observes leadership expert Maxwell (The 360 Degree Leader), who advises readers on building their strengths to become a "Talent-plus person." In the first chapter, he examines how "belief lifts your talent," whether it's belief in your potential, yourself and your mission that empowers and encourages you. He then introduces a dozen other factors that can be combined with talent to achieve your goals: passion, initiative, focus, preparation, practice, perseverance, courage, teachability, character, relation- ships, responsibility and teamwork. Synthesizing the work of business gurus like Marcus Bucking- ham and Peter Drucker with inspiring anecdotes from the lives of famous athletes and coaches, Christian leaders, writers and artists, Maxwell engages the reader with his enthusiasm for his subject matter and clear insights. Well organized and focused, the book conveys how talent can be enhanced through historical and contemporary examples of "Talent-Plus" people in action- from Charles Dickens to Vince Lombardi and Tom Hanks.

TWO GUARD FASTBREAK

In the Two Guard Fastbreak there are no assigned lanes. There are no predetermined guard or guards. All players play all positions with the exception of after made baskets. After made baskets the 5 man inbounds the basketball. That is the only change in the break from the break off a miss. On a make the other four positions are interchangeable.

Once the basketball is rebounder the four non-rebounders all follow the same path. That path is they sprint to the line extened about two steps from the sideline. The first player on each side that reaches this position recognizes he is the first person in that lane and turn to sprint up that sideline. The player should sprint up the sideline looking over his inside shoulder.

1) The first player out in each lane sprints down the sideline looking over his inside should because the rebounder may outlet the basketball directly to one of the first players out.

2) The second player to reach the sideline on his side of the court recognizes that he is the second player to fill that lane. Once he recognizes this he "sits" at free throw line extended, about two steps from the sideline, with his back to the sideline. This is happening on both sides of the court.

3) Keep in mind that all players are interchangeable and may actually play a different spot each trip down the court. With that in mind we will use the numbers in the diagram to illustrate and communicate the offensive movement.

4 (the rebounder) outlets the basketball to 2, 5 breaks directly to the middle of the court at the center jump circle. 1 and 3 continues their sprint down the court still looking for a pass.

4) If the first players out do not receive a pass they continue their sprint to the far free throw line extended then they cut directly to the on their side of the court.

5) 2 looks down the sideline and if 3 is open makes the pass to 3. Remember it is important that 3 runs wide and looking over his inside shoulder.

Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 – www.goxavier.com FROM: www.coach-jackson.com TWO GUARD FAST BREAK

6) 1 is also running wide and looking over his inside shoulder looking for a pass from 2.

Here for the first time in the diagrams we see the actions of the rebounder/outlet passer (4 in the diagram). The rebounder goes opposite of his outlet pass.

It would be very helpful in learning this offense to NEVER use the old "3-Man Weave Drill" in which the passer passes to a player and goes behind the player he passes to.

7) 3-LANES DRILL: This a a great drill to use instead of the old "3-Man Weave Drill." In this drill all three players start in the lane. 4 starts by tossing the ball off the and rebounding the ball. When the ball is tossed 2 and 5 sprint out (and for the purpose of the drill you tell them they are the second player in that lane) and "sit" 4 will outlet to 2 (or 5), when the pass has left 4's hands toward 2, 5 sprints to the middle of the court at the jump circle. 4 goes opposite his pass and fills the left lane. 2 passes to 5, then 2 runs the right lane. 5 catches the pass from 2 and dribbles to the top of the , passing to either 2 or 5 for a .

8) When 3 receives the ball on the pass ahead, he looks to attack the basket on the dribble to shoot a layup or a short bank shot at the block.

9) If a defender moves over to stop 3's attack on the basket, 3 passes to 1 sprinting the left lane to the basket for a layup.

10) If two defenders are back defensively and one defender stops 3's drive to the basket, we teach 3 to cross-over dribble and get into the lane for a short .

11) The next move we teach is that if a defender stops 3's initial attack, then 3 crosses-over and attempts to drive to the lane, but a defender stops 3's drive into the lane. As 3 approaches the defender who is stopping him from penetrating into the lane 3 performs a reverse dribble and shoots a layup.

13) After 3 receives a pass from 2 near half court he may look to pass the ball across court to a sprinting 1.

This pass should be made around the half court area but no lower than the old hash mark. If you enter the area below the old hash mark 3 would look to attack the basket and draw a defender before making the pass to 1.

12) If 2 does not pass down the sideline to 3 or 1, his next look is to pass to 5 breaking to the middle of the court at the jump circle. 3 and 1 continue their sprint down the sideline toward the block on their side of the court. 4 goes opposite his outlet pass.

13) 5 has the option of taking one or two dribbles to the top of the key. 1 and 3 continue their sprint down the sideline until they reach free throw line extended then they turn their sprint to the block on their side of the court. 4 fills the left wing area and 2 fills the right wing area.

14) You are now in this set. Although you may have a 5 man at the top of the key and a 4 on the wing as we see here. Even though this seems like we may be out of position it is rather an advantage because as players move their spots in the offense - whatever that offense may be - your team is automatically running a different secondary break nearly every time down the court. You of course will need to practice how to move into your offense from this formation. We have found it better to just tell players to get to their spots and let them do it rather than to attempt to explain to them how to do it from every possible combination.

15) 5's other option after receiving the pass from 2 is to advance the ball on the pass to either 1 and 3. This is not the second option, and the dribble by 5 was not the first option. They are both simply options.

From here 1 can attack the basket as previously described.

Let us just stop a minute here to remind the reader that there are no assigned spots in the break. We are saying the 1 can attack the basket because it happens to be 1 in the diagram, in a game it could in fact be any of the five players. The same holds true for each of the other four positions.

16) If 2 cannot pass to 5 breaking to the center of the court 5 will continues to the right lane and fill the right wing area. 5 will not stop in the middle and look for the pass. 2 may now dribble to the middle to the top of the key. We are now set up in the same formation as previously.

17) 2 also has the option of passing the ball across court to 4 (the outlet passer) running the left lane.

18) If 2 passed across to 4, 5 would continue to the right lane and fill the right wing area. 4 has the option of straight down the court to the left wing area. 2 would then fill the middle lane at the top of the key.

19) 4 also has the option to dribble to the top of the key. In this case 2 will fill the left wing spot.

20) If 4 made the outlet pass to 5, then 2 would break to the middle jump circle and 4 would go opposite his pass and fill the right lane.

21) 2 would pass the ball ahead to 1 or 3 or 2 may dribble to the top of the key. 1 moves to the left block, 3 moves to the right block, 5 fills the left wing spot and 4 fills the right wing spot.

22) We are now set up in the same 1-2-2 set ready to begin the offense.

Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 – www.goxavier.com FROM: www.coach-jackson.com TWO GUARD FAST BREAK

23) MADE SHOTS

On all made shots 5 inbounds the ball. The other four players follow the same rules as on a miss shot that they did not . The first player out on the right side runs the right wing (1 in the diagram), and the first player out on the left side runs the left wing (2 in the diagram). The second player out on the right side "sits" looking for the inbounds pass from 5. The second player out on the left side "sits" looking for the inbounds pass from 5.

5 may inbound the ball to 4.

24) Or if 5 is on the other side of the court he may inbound to 3. After a made shot 5 may also run the baseline.

Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 – www.goxavier.com FROM: www.coach-jackson.com TWO GUARD FAST BREAK

25) If 3 and 4 cannot receive the inbounds pass, they break to the nearest elbow.

1 and 2, who were the first players out in their lanes have looked back over their inside shoulder as they sprint down the court.

If the ball has not been inbounded by the time they reach half court, they "Return". A "Return" means they change directions and move back to replace the player on their side of the court that broke to the elbow.

26) If 5 inbounds to 2, the player at the nearest elbow (3 in the diagram) breaks to the intersection of the sideline and halfcourt. The player at the far elbow breaks to the middle jump circle (4 in the diagram). The opposite "Return" player sprints down the far sideline (1 in the diagram). 2 has the option to pass to any of these three. 5 steps inbounds to look for a return pass.

27) If 2 passes back to 5 for the return pass, the player in the middle moves to the "sit" position on the opposite side of the court and 2 breaks into the middle position.

28) As the ball is reverse to 4, he then looks for 2 in the middle or he may pass to 1 down the sideline who then passes to 2 in the middle.

Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 – www.goxavier.com FROM: www.coach-jackson.com TWO GUARD FAST BREAK

29) If the opponent is pressing but not denying the inbounds pass, as in a 2-2-1 press we now look the same as we did in Diagrams 25 and 26. And there is no need to execute a "Return." As the ball is passed inbounds to 4, 2 breaks hard to the middle.

30) If 2 is not open in the middle and cannot be passed to 1, 4 then reverses the ball to 5, 2 returns to the "sit" position on his side of the court and 4 breaks into the middle of the court.

Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 – www.goxavier.com FROM: www.coach-jackson.com TWO GUARD FAST BREAK

31) When the ball is passed into the middle 4 can push the ball on the dribble or turn and Look Opposite and pass the ball to 1.

Without a doubt the Two-Guard Fastbreak is a tough offensive attack to stop with it many options. And with it's ability to attack and defeat any full court pressure defense as well as attacking an opponent during transition.
