Basketball Rules
Basketball Rules 1. Each team consists of five players. Basketball is played by two teams. The purpose of each team is to throw the ball into it’s own basket and to prevent the other team from scoring. 2. A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and passes through. A goal from the field counts 2 points for the team into whose basket the ball is thrown. A goal from a free throw attempt is credited to the thrower and counts 1 point for his or her team. A goal made from beyond the 3-point arc counts 3 points . 3. Jump Ball – This play takes place in the center of the court to start the game. The referee tosses the ball up between two opposing players. Players try to out-jump each other and tap the ball to a teammate. 4. Violation – Minor rule infraction such as: • Traveling – taking more than one step before passing or dribbling the ball. • Stepping out of bounds. • Throwing the ball out of bounds. • Double Dribble – dribbling, stopping the dribble, and starting the dribble again; dribbling the ball with both hands for more than one dribble. • 3 Seconds – offensive player with or without the ball may not be in the lane for more than 3 seconds. • Over and Back – once the ball has crossed over the center line, the offense may not go back over it. • Palming the Ball – permitting the ball to come to rest in one hand while dribbling. * On a violation the other team gains possession of the ball on the sideline or baseline. -

ORYA Basketball 3rd and 4th Grade Game Rules GAME PLAY 1. Please start games promptly. Teams should have at least 3 players each to start a game. If 3 players are not present, coaches have the option to loan players. There is no scoring or official clock at this level. 2. Play is 3 on 3 full court with man to man defense (no zone/no double team). No pressing at any time. Defense to initially pick up INSIDE 3-point line to allow offense to cross half court. Ideally defense lines up with one foot in the paint. 3. Games will consist of 2 – 20-minute halves, with running clock (Home team to keep time – on phone, etc.) with a 2 Minute half-time. 2nd half to run longer than 20 minutes is under the discretion of both coaches (taking into account number of subs, how much time is left before next team scheduled to play, etc). Clock Stop • The home coach may stop the clock in the case of unreasonable delay, i.e. the ball goes under the bleachers, an injured player, etc. • The clock will stop for all time-outs and quick substitution 4. Each team is allowed 1 time-out per half. Time-outs will be one minute and may be taken any time during half, on offensive possession (coach to call). 5. Games refereed by at least one coach. Coach discretion - can swap halves, or have 2 refs if there are enough assistants, etc. Referee Instruction • Instructional and loose refereeing may be needed – especially for younger/newer players and at the beginning of the season (ie. -

Basketball Study Guide James A. Naismith invented basketball in 1891 at the YMCA in Springfield, Mass. The game consists of 5 players on each team. RULES: Point value- Basket= 2 points, Free throw= 1 point, Outside the arc (3 point line)= 3 points. There are 2 types of penalties: Violations: 1. Double dribble- when a player dribbles with two hands at the time or they dribble a second time after they stop 2. Goal tending- Once a shot is coming down to the rim, a player may not touch the ball. 3. Traveling- After a player stops their dribble, they move both of their feet. 4. Three seconds- when an offensive player is in their free throw lane for more than 3 seconds when their team has the ball. Fouls: 1. Charging into an opponent 2. Holding 3. Hitting 4. Pushing 5. Tripping Triple Threat: When you receive a ball, before you dribble you are holding the ball about chest high. You have three options- dribble, pass, and shoot. This position is called triple threat. BEEF: body position for shooting B- Balance- legs bent, athletic stance E- Elbow in E- Eyes on target (rim) F- Follow-through to the target, snap the wrist. Dribbling: used to legally move the ball during a game. - eyes up - use pads of fingers - knees bent - protect the ball with your body Lay-up: A lay-up is a shot that is performed closer to the basket while moving. - Take one step - Shooting hand and same knee go up when the ball is being shot. -

Waverley Wildcats Basketball Club A0019336V Drill Skill Free throw 28 – Mushball shooting Offense/defense close to basket Description Players line up as shown in Diagram A. One player is in each of the low free-throw lane positions. The remaining players line up at the free- A throw line with the first person in line with a ball. The shooter shoots free-throws until they miss, scoring one point for each made shot. Free-throw lane rules must be adhered to; players in the lane cannot cross line until ball hits the rim, and the shooter cannot cross free-throw line until ball hits rim. On a miss all three players play to score. That is, the person who rebounds is on offense, the other two are on defense. A field goal from this 1 on 2 contest is worth two points. Players cannot go further than one step outside key. Play continues until either (a) a field goal is scored, (b) the ball leaves the field of play (i.e. one step outside of key), (c) a violation occurs or (d) the ball is held. Then players rotate. The rotation sequence is shown in Diagram B. Encourage strong moves to the basket, through the defense. There are no fouls (other than flagrant ones) in mushball. Variations a) In the case where a player is well defended and cannot score, allow a pass out to the coach (who is standing to one side just inside the three-point line). The coach should return the ball to the same player, as long as she does a good job of getting open (by B cutting to the basket, or posting up). -

Girls Inter-Village Basketball League Rules 2020 Barrington, Bartlett, Dundee, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Palatine, Schaumburg, South Barrington & Streamwood All participants will adhere to these Inter-Village League Rules. All other rules not defined here will be subject to IHSA/NFHS official Basketball Rulebook. 1. Player, Parent, and Coach Conduct: a) The officials may remove any player or coach from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct, including inappropriate language. In severe cases, the League Administrator may remove a player or coach from league play. b) Team coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players, parents and spectators. If an official finds their conduct disruptive to the game, the following courses of action may be taken: • First Warning to the team coach. • Second Technical foul against the team. • Third Forfeiture of the game. c) Three (3) technical fouls on a team in a given game shall constitute a forfeit. d) Two (2) technical fouls on a coach or player will result in disqualification and the coach/player will be asked to leave the gym and will be suspended from coaching/participating in the next scheduled game. e) If a coach or a parent is removed from a game, their child must leave the game and facility with that parent. 2. Length of the game: a) 3rd/4th Grade Games 4 x 6 minute quarters; Stopped clock. b) 5th /6th grade games 4 x 10 minute quarters; Running clock. c) 7th/8th Grade Games 4 x 10 minute quarters; Running clock. (The clock will stop on all whistles in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half, unless a team is up by 10 points) d) Overtime will consist of a three-minute period. -

The minimum required to start a game is 4 players. d) Each team shall designate to the Referee the team captain or captains for the contest. The captain is required to sign the scorecard at the end of each game. The team captain is responsible for all information and policies contained in the Intramural Innertube Water Polo Rules and Intramural Handbook. e) All players must follow Campus Recreation’s swimming pool policies found at the following link. i) http://www.campusrec.illinois.edu/membership/policies/policies_pool.html No Show Procedure for 10 minute wait period a) If a team is not present and ready to play by the scheduled game time (in proper swim attire and minimum number of players in the pool area) the opposing team will be given the choice to take a forfeit win or grant the team that is not ready a 10 minute wait period to field a legal team. If the 10 minute wait period is granted, the game clock will be started at the scheduled game time. b) If the team that is not present shows up or achieves a legal lineup within the 10 minute wait period, the game will be started immediately with the following exceptions: Time that has already run off the game clock will not be replaced. -

Glossary Basketball Glossary A Advance step: A step in which the defender's lead foot steps toward their man, and her back foot slides forward. Assist: A pass thrown to a player who immediately scores. B Backcourt: The half of the court a team is defending. The opposite of the frontcourt. Also used to describe parts of a team: backcourt = all guards (front court= all forwards and centers) Back cut: See cuts, Backdoor cut Backdoor cut: See cuts Back screen: See Screens Ball fake: A sudden movement by the player with the ball intended to cause the defender to move in one direction, allowing the passer to pass in another direction. Also called "pass fake." Ball reversal: Passing the ball from one side of the court to the other. Ball screen: See Screens Ball side: The half of the court (if the court is divided lengthwise) that the ball is on. Also called the "strong side." The opposite of the help side. Banana cut: See cuts Bank shot: A shot that hits the backboard before hitting the rim or going through the net. Baseball pass: A one-handed pass thrown like a baseball. Baseline: The line that marks the playing boundary at each end of the court. Also called the "end line." Baseline out-of-bounds play: The play used to return the ball to the court from outside the baseline along the opponent's basket. Basket cut: See cuts. Blindside screen: See Backscreen Glossary Block: (1) A violation in which a defender steps in front of a dribbler but is still moving when they collide.
