1-minute Lay-ups Form one line under one basket, another line under opposite basket. 1 player has Description ball at elbow facing opposite basket. On coach's mark, players with the ball dribble full speed to make lay-up at other Instructions end. Next person in each line takes ball out of net and sprint dribble to opposite end for lay-up. Players Team We try to make 22 lay-ups in one minute. This allows for no misses in that minute. Tips We go right-handed 1 minute and left-handed 1 minute. This is a great conditioning drill as well as a skill drill for full speed lay-ups. Number of makes depends on skill level of your team. Variations Our consequences are sprints or pushups. Skills Full speed lay-ups 15 man scrimmage We work on offensive transition (numbered fast break), defensive communication, secondary break into our offense and make it competitive. Description You need 3 teams of 5 ex.(blue team, gold team and white team). Put gold team at one basket, blue team at the other basket, and white team at mid-court. White team has the ball and will play 5 on 5 vs blue team while the gold team does another drill, such as shooting drill, inbound plays, free throws, etc. Once the blue team has possession of the ball by either a turnover, rebound or off of a made basket by white, they push the ball up the floor vs gold team and play them 5 on 5 Instructions while white team does another drill. The gold team must call out the number of the person they are guarding while the blue team goes directly into the secondary break into the offense. once the defensive team (gold) gets possession of the ball they push it up the floor vs the white team and so on. Players 15 We keep the score of all 3 teams and the 2 losers run. We normally put 8 min. on Tips the clock and play. You can give points to the defense if you wish on turnovers, defensive rebound, Variations etc and extra points for the offense on offensive rebounds. Skills Transition Offense, Secondary Break, Defensive Communication 2-Minute Lay-Ups This drill is good for conditioning and it also helps your kids take shots from games spots at game tempo. In many of our games we miss easy lay-ups. This Description frustrates me as a coach so we use this drill to stress the importance of doing things at game speed. Place 6 players at each baseline under the goal. Place two passers or outlets at the top of the key. Each line has 2 basketballs and each player must make an outlet pass to the passer which, returns the ball right back. The player must then go full speed taking only 3 dribble reaching the basket making the lay-up. Players must stay close to the sideline and pick a suitable angle for the lay-up. Players must Instructions stay close to the sideline and pick a suitable angle for the lay-up. Place 2 minutes on the clock and require them to make 75 or 80 as a team. The next player in line must be in position to rebound the shot. If the team fails we start over. We also rotate right hand and left hand. Players 12 Stress good (no great!) outlet passes because this is the key for the team to be Tips successful. Skills Lay-ups, Dribbling, Passing, Rebounding 1 vs 2 - 2 vs 1 The players assume a basic three lines drills position on the baseline, the central one with the ball (offensive players), those lateral without ball (defensive players). To the signal of the coach the first player with the ball dribbling for lay up in the Description opposite basket, to the second signal, two or three second later, the first player of each lateral lines run to stop the ball. After have marked the offensive player becomes defender, and the two defender become offensive players. To the return they play 2vs1. Players minimum 3 Tips Emphasize speed The lateral players start when the ballhandler reaches the free throw line. Variations Limit number of dribbling in the 1vs2 (5 or 6) In the 2vs1 the offensive players don't use dribbling 2'30 Full Court Drill 2 groups of 3 players on one end of the floor on the baseline with 1 ball and 1 group of 3 players at the other end of the floor at the baseline (no ball). 2'30'' on the clock. The 1st group of 3 players is spread out on the baseline with the ball in the middle. The 1st pass is made to the player on the left-hand side and the pass can't be caught any higher than the free-throw line extended. The player after receiving the 1st pass is allowed 1 dribble before he makes his pass to the player Description who is streaking down the right hand side of the court. After receiving the pass the player shoots a right hand lay up while the other 2 players sprint down the court and must be with in the 3pt line once the ball is shot. All 3 players stay in their lanes (no 3 man weave) and the following group gets the rebound (player in the middle) and makes his initial pass to his left and the drill continues in the other direction. A good score is 25-30 lay-ups in 2m30s. Players 9 min Player on the right hand side of the floor can anticipate taking off easily but don't Tips let the 1st pass to the left be caught any higher than the free-throw line extended. Variations First pass to the right and the lay up is shot with the left hand. 20-10-10 We use this drill for several purposes. Conditioning, transition, shooting lay ups, Description and full court fast break opportunities. The team must make 20 lay-ups in a row within the 10-minute time frame or we run 10 up and back sprints. Instructions Divide team into 5 lines on the baseline. Players will five-man weave down the floor and back. When one group finishes, the next group of 5 head down and back. This continues for 10 minutes or 20 consecutive lay-ups, which ever comes first. The coach or the manager keeps track of the number of consecutive lay-ups made. Every time there is a missed lay-up, the count starts over. If the team makes 20 lay-ups before the time expires, I usually give them some type of reward. As the team progresses, I increase the number of consecutive lay-ups or cut the time allotted, or increase the number of sprints. Players 5 or more, 10-15 players works best Challenge players to go as hard as they can. Initially they will take things pretty slow and cautious. Tips Be sure your players are communicating with each other. This can be a great team builder to help bring up the level of play of your lower skilled players. Everyone must do his or her part in order for success in this drill. Every time there is a poorly thrown pass, start the count over. Variations Every time the ball is fumbled or mishandled, start the count over. Every time there is a violation, i.e. traveling, start the count over. Skills Passing and Shooting Lay-up Under Pressure Nonstop 3 Man Weave It is just three man weave but you use three balls to add a little confusion to the Description drill. Players are allowed to release to represent the fast break. We run this drill for ten minutes. We keep score in order to keep the intensity up. Instructions It is just three man weave but you allow the players to be going with three different groups all at the same time. Players 12 Tips Whatever score they reach is the new goal for tomorrow. Skills Passing, mental concentration and lay-ups 3 minute 10 seconds Start with half of each team on each baseline. Set the clock for as long as you want usually 3-5 minutes. Decide what side is going to go first. Then buzz the horn and Description the first side has 10 seconds to get down to the other baseline and back past the free-throw line. Then after 10 seconds buzz horn again and the other side goes. This is continuous for allotted time. Players Team 3 on 2 conditioner Have 3 players w/ball on one end of the court,as well as 2 defenders on the other Description end. Next, split up remaining players on both sides, at half court. As the 3 offensive players pass half court, a player from one line runs out, touches center court and trails as a defensive player. At the same time 2 players run out from the other line, touch center court as well, and run to the other end of the Instructions floor. After the defenders have rebounded the ball or surrendered a basket, they will then become the 3 offensive players against the 2 who ran out to the other end of the floor. Players 12 or more Make sure to stress to the offense that they must score quickly or face a 3 on 3 Tips situation instead of 3 on 2. This drill is also great as a conditioning drill since players are constantly rotating off and on the court.
