FMR. CLINTON ADVISER PAUL BEGALA ENDORSES TEDDY DAVIS FOR LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL Begala Fundraising E-Mail Calls Davis a ‘Rare Gem’ LOS FELIZ, CA—USC Unruh Fellow Teddy Davis, 35, was endorsed today by former Clinton adviser Paul Begala, adding additional momentum to Davis’ race to succeed Councilmember Tom LaBonge in the City’s 4thDistrict. “I don't normally get involved in City Council races. But trust me on this one,” writes Begala in a fundraising solicitation that is being emailed to Davis’ supporters later today. “When I left my position as Counselor to the President in the Clinton , Teddy Davis was a student of mine at . The course was a small seminar on ‘Governing in the 90's.’ The students were highly motivated - some of the brightest kids at one of the best schools in the country - and still, Teddy was a standout.” “Teddy is now 35 years old and running to represent the neighborhoods he grew up in on the Los Angeles City Council,” Begala’s e-mail continues. “Teddy will be accessible to local residents and stand up for them at City Hall.” The Begala endorsement of Davis comes exactly one year before voters go to the polls to choose a successor to Councilmember Tom LaBonge who is terming out of office after first being elected in 2001. Paul Begala is senior strategist for Priorities USA Action, a PAC that played a crucial role in re-electing President Obama. Begala first entered the national political scene after the consulting firm he and fellow Democratic strategist started, Carville & Begala, helped President get elected in 1992. Begala went on to serve as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House, helping define and defend the administration's agenda. After leaving the Clinton administration, Begala joined Georgetown University as a research professor of government and public policy. “I’m honored to have earned the support of Paul Begala,” said Davis. “Paul taught me that politics should be about putting people ahead of powerful special interests." Begala’s endorsement of Davis follows endorsements from actor/director/environmental leader Ed Begley, Jr.; Sherman Oaks Teacher of the Year Ken Hyatt; J. Richard Leyner, the past chairman of Valley VOTE and United Chambers of Commerce of the San Fernando Valley; and former California Senate President Pro Tempore David Roberti. Davis is an educator, attorney, and Emmy Award winning journalist who covered national politics for ABC News. He served as Special Assistant to the Governor of California and on the senior staff of the Mayor of Los Angeles. Teddy Davis grew up in Los Feliz and Sherman Oaks and is now running to represent these neighborhoods and all of Council District 4 on the Los Angeles City Council. Davis is married to Emily Turner Davis, an editor for Island Press, a publishing house that specializes in books about the environment. When I left my position as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House, Teddy Davis was a student of mine at Georgetown University. The course was a small seminar on "Governing in the 90's." The students were highly motivated - some of the brightest kids at one of the best schools in the country - and still, Teddy was a standout. Teddy has a keen mind and inquisitive attitude. He has the interpersonal skills to stake out and defend a strongly-held belief without looking like a jerk. Teddy also has a commitment to ideas and causes beyond his narrow self interest that mark him as a rare gem. Teddy is now 35 years old and running to represent the neighborhoods he grew up in on the Los Angeles City Council. He is focused on LA’s top priorities: creating jobs, reducing traffic, keeping neighborhoods clean and safe. Most importantly, Teddy will be accessible to local residents and stand up for them at City Hall. Teddy brings to the Council job the experience of having worked for the Mayor of Los Angeles, the Governor of California, and as an Emmy Award winning ABC News journalist. He also volunteers at his local public school, helping kids become first in their family to go to college. As soon as Teddy got in the race, I donated the maximum $700 to his campaign. I hope you will join me in supporting Teddy by contributing $5, $50 or $250 today. You will thank me for this later. All the best, Paul Begala ###
