  • Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy
The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada Abstract This article explores how Donald Trump capitalized on the right's decades-long, carefully choreographed and well-financed campaign against political correctness in relation to the broader strategy of 'cultural conservatism.' It provides an historical overview of various iterations of this campaign, discusses the mainstream media's complicity in promulgating conservative talking points about higher education at the height of the 1990s 'culture wars,' examines the reconfigured anti- PC/pro-free speech crusade of recent years, its contemporary currency in the Trump era and the implications for academia and educational policy. Keywords: political correctness, culture wars, free speech, cultural conservatism, critical pedagogy Introduction More than two years after Donald Trump's ascendancy to the White House, post-mortems of the 2016 American election continue to explore the factors that propelled him to office. Some have pointed to the spread of right-wing populism in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis that culminated in Brexit in Europe and Trump's victory (Kagarlitsky, 2017; Tufts & Thomas, 2017) while Fuchs (2018) lays bare the deleterious role of social media in facilitating the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. and elsewhere. Other 69 | P a g e The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy explanations refer to deep-rooted misogyny that worked against Hillary Clinton (Wilz, 2016), a backlash against Barack Obama, sedimented racism and the demonization of diversity as a public good (Major, Blodorn and Blascovich, 2016; Shafer, 2017).

  • A Gay/Straight Comparison of Gay Voices
A GAY/STRAIGHT COMPARISON OF GAY VOICES A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY SHANE LANNING DR. CAROLYN MACKAY - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2015 Lanning-1 Introduction: This study compares 4 gay male comedians and 4 straight male comedians’ performances of “gay speech”. The researcher observed comedians who were performing gay characters for the following three variables: the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), a raised pitch, and formal [–iŋ] vs. informal [–In] endings. It was hypothesized that both straight comedians and gay comedians would manipulate their [s] production to the dental [s̪ ] when performing a gay character; moreover, the comedians would also raise their pitch during their performance. The [–iŋ] vs. [–In] sounds, because their production below the level of consciousness, would not vary in the homosexual or heterosexual comedians. The purpose of this comparison was to determine how salient the features were in each group in order to identify stereotypical features associated with gay speech. In other words, if all of the comedians were using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a stronger association with perceived gay speakers. Conversely, if the comedians were not using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a weaker association or is not associated at all with perceived gay speakers. In recent studies, participants were asked to rate speakers on a scale of homosexual to heterosexual and a scale of feminine to masculine. In these studies, the data showed that features like the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), received higher gay ratings; participants rated speakers’ sexuality as gay more often when they exhibited this feature (Mack & Munson, 2012).

  • 23Rd Annual Legislative Forum October 4, 2018 Legislative Forum 2018
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS RIGHT TIME. RIGHT PLACE. RIGHT SOLUTION. 23RD ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE FORUM OCTOBER 4, 2018 LEGISLATIVE FORUM 2018 Maine could make national headlines this November because of the number of key races on the ballot this year. With important seats up for grabs and two political parties looking to score “big wins” in our state, the only thing we can predict about our political forecast is that it is unpredictable. • Who will be Maine’s next Governor? • Which party will take control of the State Legislature? • Will incumbents prevail in Maine’s first and second Congressional districts? • Who will win the race for U.S. Senate, and will the result impact the balance of power in Washington? With so much up in the air here in Maine and a stagnant climate looming over Washington, our Legislative Forum’s key note speaker, CNN commentator Paul Begala, will offer his unique perspective and insight on today’s political landscape. He will discuss why Maine’s races will be closely watched and talk about the impact the 2018 midterm elections will have on our country and state. Begala will also offer his thoughts on the biggest issues facing Congress and how the election will impact Washington’s agenda. We’ll also bring to the stage radio power duo Ken and Matt from WGAN Newsradio’s Ken & Matt Show to share their political humor and insights with our Forum guests. Through their comedic banter, they will give “their take” on today’s top policy issues and the candidates running for office. And to close out the day, Maine Credit Union League President/CEO Todd Mason will interview a Special Guest to talk about why credit union advocacy and electing pro-credit union candidates matter.

  • Politics Book Discussion Guide
One Book One Northwestern Book Group Discussion Politics Politics ¡ How do you think someone’s political affiliation (Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, Independent, etc.) may affect his or her analysis of the likelihood of certain world events? When have you seen this happen in real life? ¡ E.g. elections, wars, trade deals, environmental policy, etc. ¡ How can someone manage his or her own biases when making political predictions? Use your ideas and Silver’s. ¡ This election cycle has had a series of anomalies, especially regarding the race for and selection of presidential candidates. ¡ What specific anomalies have you noticed in this election cycle? ¡ How can political analysts factor in the possibility of anomalies in their predictions, given that there is no model to look back on that incorporates these anomalies? Politics ¡ In May 2016, Nate Silver published a blog post called “How I Acted Like A Pundit And Screwed Up On Donald Trump.” In the post, he lists reasons for why he incorrectly predicted that Trump would not win the Republican nomination for President, including that he ignored polls in favor of “educated guesses.” Harry Enten, a senior analyst at Nate Silver’s website FiveThirtyEight, describes more of this problem in an interview with This American Life. ¡ Why do you think Silver and his team ignored polls in this case, when they have relied on them heavily in the past? ¡ How do you think Silver’s predictions would have turned out differently if he had taken polls into consideration? ¡ Do you think Silver’s personal biases regarding the presidential candidate influenced his decisions when making his predictions? Why or why not? Politics: Case Study ¡ The Context: In July 2016, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was criticized for making public statements about the unfitness of presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Bauer, and Magda Konieczna Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Table of Contents Executive Summary 3 Introduction 7 Boundaries and Tensions Within the Online Conservative News Field 15 Training, Standards, and Practices 41 Columbia Journalism School Conservative Newswork 3 Executive Summary Through much of the 20th century, the U.S. news diet was dominated by journalism outlets that professed to operate according to principles of objectivity and nonpartisan balance. Today, news outlets that openly proclaim a political perspective — conservative, progressive, centrist, or otherwise — are more central to American life than at any time since the first journalism schools opened their doors. Conservative audiences, in particular, express far less trust in mainstream news media than do their liberal counterparts. These divides have contributed to concerns of a “post-truth” age and fanned fears that members of opposing parties no longer agree on basic facts, let alone how to report and interpret the news of the day in a credible fashion. Renewed popularity and commercial viability of openly partisan media in the United States can be traced back to the rise of conservative talk radio in the late 1980s, but the expansion of partisan news outlets has accelerated most rapidly online. This expansion has coincided with debates within many digital newsrooms. Should the ideals journalists adopted in the 20th century be preserved in a digital news landscape? Or must today’s news workers forge new relationships with their publics and find alternatives to traditional notions of journalistic objectivity, fairness, and balance? Despite the centrality of these questions to digital newsrooms, little research on “innovation in journalism” or the “future of news” has explicitly addressed how digital journalists and editors in partisan news organizations are rethinking norms.

Frank DeCaro's future existence came as a great surprise to his parents, Frank and Marion LaRegina DeCaro. After a decade of marriage, during which they had endured the painful experience of three miscarriages, they had given up the hope of having children, but when Marian DeCaro underwent an operation for a tumor in 1962, the couple learned that she was once again pregnant. Their only child was born in New York City on November 6 of that year. DeCaro grew up in nearby Little Falls, New Jersey in a household that included his maternal grandmother, who lived in the basement and "ruled the roost." When he was a toddler, his father suffered a heart attack and survived but, DeCaro wrote, "stopped dreaming and lost any semblance of playfulness he ever had." As a result of his father's emotional withdrawal, the boy became especially close to his mother. DeCaro's childhood was a mixture of Catholic Italian-American experience, pop culture, drag Halloween costumes, homophobic gym teachers, and Advanced Placement courses. In A Boy Named Phyllis: A Suburban Memoir (1996) he recounts this mélange with characteristic humor; nevertheless, he also speaks touchingly of the pain of being "different," enduring bullying and slurs from schoolmates, and getting very little support from teachers who could and should have intervened to stop the abuse.

Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.
