Politics and Entertainment Unite at the Second Annual Politicon POLITICS AND ENTERTAINMENT UNITE AT THE SECOND ANNUAL POLITICON Confirmed participants span all political affiliations and include Governor Sarah Palin, President Vicente Fox of Mexico, James Carville, Wendy Davis, Paul Begala, Senator Barbara Boxer, Ann Coulter, Frank Luntz, plus comedians from The Daily Show and The Nightly Show The return of the national two-day festival will take place at the Pasadena Convention Center on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday June 26, 2016 Los Angeles, Calif. (March 7, 2016, updated May 19, 2016) — The worlds of politics and entertainment are set to merge again this summer at the second annual Politicon, the Unconventional Political Convention, held at the Pasadena Convention Center on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26, 2016. A nonpartisan fan fest for politics and entertainment, Politicon will bring together politicians, pundits, comedians and entertainers from across the spectrum for a weekend of comedy, panels, book signings, radio and TV broadcasts, debates, podcasts, interviews, film screenings, meet & greets, and much more. Last year over 9,000 fans flocked to the inaugural Politicon and the festival is anticipated to bring even more political nerds to the West Coast in 2016. Already confirmed to participate in this year’s Politicon are Governor Sarah Palin, President Vicente Fox of Mexico, James Carville, Ann Coulter, Upright Citizens Brigade, Eugene Robinson, Dinesh D’Souza, Senator Barbara Boxer, Lizz Winstead, Jon Ronson, Paul Begala, Van Jones, S.E. Cupp, Sally Kohn, Tomi Lahren, Touré, Ken Rudin, Michael Murphy, Congressman Ted Lieu, and many more to be announced in the coming weeks. From The Nightly Show Grace Parra and Jordon Carlos will be attending Politicon. Comedian Greg Proops will be hosting his podcast The Greg Proops Film Club Live at Politicon. Additionally, political consultant Frank Luntz will be on-site, attempting to hold the world’s largest focus group of over 3,000 individuals. The public opinion guru has garnered fame for his instant response focus groups, featured on Fox News after presidential debates. A full list of participants can be found here: politicon.com/lineup. 2016’s Politicon will also mark the return of Democracy Village, a space dedicated to politically incorrect comedy, socially charged music, interactive games, photo booths, and more. Last year featured comedy performances by Upright Citizen’s Brigade and the Founding Fathers, and beats by DJs Jeremy Sole (KCRW) and Daisy O’Dell. This year’s Politicon will also bring back the Art Exhibition, which will feature provocative art pieces from all sides of the political spectrum. What propels this mythology is the concept of the Internet as a neutral site, where identity is irrelevant other than the persona one chooses to create and share. Social life on the Internet is presented as an idealized, random collection of atomized individuals who happen to come together to interact over shared interests, with collectivity stopping there. Of course, this mythology has always been attractive to a certain segment of the population, who has always been able to utilize the Internet and shape society as they wished: Straight white men, often considered the default Internet user, see the Internet as a neutral tool because it conforms so exactly to their expectations, everyone else had to make adjustments and look for loopholes in order to use the Internet in the way they wanted. (Poland, 2016, p. 213) Indeed, for the women and minorities who are constantly harassed on the Internet, they are met with the dismissive (if not hostile) attitude that this is the price to pay for having the nerve to disrupt the “wide, open cyberspaces” that they are violating because of their unwillingness to no longer let racism, sexism, and homophobia go unnoticed. This can take the form of name calling, threats, and a blurring of online and offline stalking and violence. Far from being a neutral, idealized space, what the Internet reveals is “a story of how the deepest prejudices in a society can take purchase in new settings due to technology” which has been in the process of “transforming not only online spaces but real lives and potentially even the trajectory of our politics” for some time now (Beauchamp, 2019, para.

Presser † INTRODUCTION Ever since the Warren Court rewrote much of the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment, there has been a debate within legal academia about the legitimacy of this judicial law making.1 Very little popular attention was paid, at least in the last several decades, to this problem. More recently, however, the issue of the legitimacy of judicial law making has begun to enter the realm of partisan popular debate. This is due to the fact that Republicans controlled the White House for six years and a majority in the Senate for almost all of that time, that they have announced, as it were, a program of picking judges committed to adjudication rather than legislation, and finally, that the Democrats have, just as vigorously, resisted Republican efforts. Cass Sunstein, a professor at the University of Chicago Law School,2 and now a visiting professor at Harvard Law School,3 has written a provocative book purporting to be a popular, yet scholarly critique of the sort of judges President George W. MOURÃO Michigan State University, USA Building on research analyses of Black Lives Matter media portrayals, this inquiry uses a two-wave panel survey to examine the effects news coverage has on the evaluation of the core ideas from the Black Lives Matter social movement agenda. Results show that conservative media use increases negative evaluations; models suggest this relationship works as a multidirectional feedback loop. Mainstream and liberal media consumptions do not lead to more positive views about Black Lives Matter’s core ideas. Keywords: media effects, partisan media, conflict, news audiences, Black Lives Matter The 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, was the catalyst that launched a brewing protest movement into the international spotlight. Police officer Darren Wilson shot the unarmed teenager multiple times in the middle of a neighborhood street. Initial protests aimed at finding justice for Brown turned violent quickly and were subsequently met with a militarized police force (e.g., Brown, 2014). Local protests continued in Ferguson while the jury deliberated Wilson’s possible indictment. However, in November 2014, Wilson was not indicted, and the decision refueled national protests. Brown’s death was one of many in 2014, and news media paid attention to the reoccurrence of similar scenarios, as well as the associated protests. These demonstrations were part of the growing, decentralized Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Protests echoed demands for justice for Black men, women, and children killed by excessive use of force, for police policy reformation, and for the acknowledgment of oppression against Blacks and other marginalized communities.
