    Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

Anderson This dissertation analyzes the roles of the Harry Truman administration and Congress in directing American policy regarding the Korean conflict. Using evidence from primary sources such as Truman’s presidential papers, communications of White House staffers, and correspondence from State Department operatives and key congressional figures, this study suggests that the legislative branch had an important role in Korean policy. Congress sometimes affected the war by what it did and, at other times, by what it did not do. Several themes are addressed in this project. One is how Truman and the congressional Democrats failed each other during the war. The president did not dedicate adequate attention to congressional relations early in his term, and was slow to react to charges of corruption within his administration, weakening his party politically.

There are gaming apps, there are weather apps, but there isn’t anything that puts the two together. So you get a forecast, you get information you need to know, but there’s a little game involved. Of course I do early morning TV, both Wake Up with Al and the Todayshow, and there was a little episode last year when I overslept for the first time. There’s a game that involves these cute little weather characters that you have to use to wake me up and help me get to the studio. So it’s both a game and a weather app.” And it incorporates your love of animation. “Yeah, I have loved animation ever since I was a little kid. I wanted to be an animator. What’s been great is that I’ve been able to use some of that in designing these apps and working with the programmers to get the animation right. It’s kind of addictive’ it’s fun. This is a project that a number of my colleagues have been working very hard on to - to get in shape having had a similar facility in Tampa last week. And as Al Hunt is fond of reminding me, eight years ago, Bloomberg was sharing space as far away from the perimeter and I guess any press could be. I think sharing that space with Al Jazeera -- About four years ago, we certainly had a press presence in Denver and St. Paul, but this year, we're a whole lot more active and a lot more aggressive and I think that reflects all the things that Bloomberg has been doing to increase its presence in Washington where, in the last two years through an acquisition and a start up, we've gone from a 145 journalists working at Bloomberg News to close to 2,000 employees and that reflects in large part the acquisition of BNA last September but also the start up of Bloomberg Government, a web based subscription service. And so over the next few days, we welcome you to come back to the Bloomberg Link for a number of events and hopefully, you'll get a chance to meet a number of my colleagues in the process.     Dear Fultonians, The Fultonian for Summer 2019 was mailed on July 12, 2019 and contained a completely unexpected honor for me as I learned that I had been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a representative of the Golden Age of Fulton Debate. It came at a perfect time for me to immediately show it to my brother Kevin, who had entered BC in 1967 and co-chaired the Fulton High School Debate Tournament in 1968. It also came at a perfect time in the history of Boston College, since the Boston College Magazine had just announced that the archive of issues from 100 years of The Heights has been made available on the internet. So I was able to browse my life at BC and recall my time as a Fultonian. I realize that your march through the decades made me one of the first honorees with an opportunity to thank you for the honor. Accordingly, I feel the obligation to recount my journey to this honor with the help of pictures and the thousands of words they merit. I was in the vortex of the Golden Age, because it didn’t begin with me and it didn’t end with me. My entrance to the Fulton certainly did not presage such an honor, based on my high school record as a member of the Behrens Debate Society of Canisius High School. I certainly couldn’t have been described as a “former all-state debater from Illinois” as Charlie Lawson, CBA ’70 was in 1967. The only debate tournament I won in high school occurred on Nov.

With the 2012 Republican presidential primary race in high gear this fall, students packed buses to nearby New Hampshire to meet presidential candidates as the IOP conducted timely younger voter public opinion research in Iowa and the Granite State. Welcome to the Institute of Politics at Harvard University Trey Grayson, Director The 2012 election cycle is in high gear, and the past six months have been fast- paced at the Institute. As you will note in this newsletter, the IOP has been at the forefront of election and campaign-related programming, with events, conferences and younger voter research unavailable anywhere else. One of my biggest goals since beginning service as the Institute’s Director has been to improve how the IOP utilizes technology – in an effort to maximize efficiency internally and best distribute and share our content externally to audiences inter- ested in politics and public service. Toward this end, we are very pleased this month to unveil the new online home for John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum programming at www.jfkjrforum.org (see feature on next page). The new microsite not only has a state-of-the art design but also can broadcast Forum programming in a format allowing Forum events to be streamed live or viewed later on any computer or device, including iPads and iPhones. We are also hard at work building a new IOP-wide website – scheduled to be completed next fall – which improves our current website layout and better integrates key online content from Institute students and student publications like the Harvard Political Review.

PutAiNo, JR.* Abstract: Public shareholders likely have suffered billions of dollars in losses in recent years as a result of collusion among potential purchasers in change-of-control transactions. Unfortunately, the federal courts have been unable to devise an appropriate antitrust approach to collusion in change-of-control transactions. This article proposes a new approach to the antitrust regulation of the market for the control of public and pri- vate companies. Collusion among purchasers in that market has occurred in nearly every American industry The proposed approach will effectively deter the three types of anticompetitive conduct most likely to occur in these circumstances: (1) express agreements to allocate bids among po- tential purchasers, (2) implicit bid rigging by potential purchasers, and (3) consortiums among potential purchasers to submit single bids in company auctions.

    1 Climate change politics in the United States From Rio to Johannesburg Pierre Lepetit* One year ago international negotiations on climate change were expected to cease after the decision of President Bush to reject the Kyoto Protocol as “fatally flawed”. Despite the Bush administration's position, the rest of the world agreed at the sixth UNFCCC1 Conference of the Parties (COP6) in Bonn to push ahead without the United States, and a number of decisions were adopted at COP7 in Marrakech in November 2001. It allows for an imminent ratification of the Kyoto protocol before the Johannesburg summit in spite of Canada’s understandable reluctance.. Nevertheless the goal set by the Convention of Climate Change will not be reached unless the United States participates fully in the international effort. Without the United States, and because the rules have been relaxed in the Bonn and Marrakech bargaining, the Kyoto protocol will have only a modest impact on worldwide emissions. As Ray Kopp2 has shown, the amount of carbon dioxide that some countries would have to cut is approximately equal to the amount by which other countries – mostly Russia - would be allowed to increase. Moreover, without the United States there is little chance to enlarge the participation in the Kyoto mechanism during the second commitment period. “Countries know that pursuing virtuous global warming policies make little sense if no one follows suit. Any individual reduction on their part will be swamped by emissions from others. Indeed going first could be economically lethal, driving up a country’s production costs and pushing jobs abroad.
