For Immediate Release Contact: Christine Czernejewski July 29, 2021 414-982-6684 Amity Shlaes, Esteemed Scholar and Author, a 2021 Bradley Prize Winner Award recognizes extraordinary talent, dedication to American exceptionalism Milwaukee, WI - The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation announced today that distinguished scholar and author Amity Shlaes is one of three winners of the 2021 Bradley Prizes. The honor recognizes individuals whose outstanding achievements reflect The Bradley Foundation’s mission to restore, strengthen and protect the principles and institutions of American exceptionalism. Shlaes will receive the award at the 17th annual Bradley Prizes ceremony on Monday, September 13th at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. “Amity’s exhaustive research and analysis of American economic history continues to inform influential decision makers,” said Rick Graber, President and CEO of The Bradley Foundation. “Her insight into how well-intentioned government programs have had the opposite effect of what they set out to achieve, provides valuable lessons for today. The Bradley Foundation is proud to honor Amity for her scholarship, which has contributed to important dialogue on economic policy.” Shlaes chairs the board of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, the official foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of America’s 30th president. The Coolidge Foundation is the sponsor of the popular Coolidge Scholarship, a full college scholarship for academic merit, and the Coolidge Senators program, which hosts 100 students each summer for a stay in Washington at Coolidge House to learn them about the values of President Coolidge. Shlaes’ most recent book is Great Society: A New History. -

H.O.P.E. What You Eat Matters A Film by Nina Messinger Documentary. Austria 2017. Running Time: 92 minutes. Language: English (with subtitles). Frame Rate: 25 fps. Shooting Format: HD. Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1, Stereo 2.0. www.hope-theproject.com H.O.P.E. What You Eat Matters I Press Kit SYNOPSIS (short) Obesity, allergies, diabetes, heart disease, or cancer: More than half of all people living in the industrialized world suffer from chronic diseases. Animals are reared for our consumption under abysmal conditions. Industrial-size livestock breeding facilities contribute to world hunger and the destruction of our natural environment and climate. The documentary H.O.P.E. shows how simply changing what we put on our plates and moving towards a plant-based diet can restore our body´s health and our planet´s balance. It has a clear message: By changing our eating habits, we can change the world! (long) Half of the population in Western society suffers from being overweight. Cardio- vascular diseases, diabetes and cancer are epidemic. Our meat consumption has quintupled over the past 50 years. 65 billion land animals are being slaughtered every year for food consumption. One third of the global grain production is fed to animals for fattening while 1.8 billion people worldwide suffer from hunger and starvation. Can there really be a solution to all these problems? It was the search for an answer to this question that led Austrian author and filmmaker Nina Messinger on a journey through Europe, India and the US to investigate the consequences of our diet and to meet with leading experts in nutrition, medicine, science, and agriculture, as well as with farmers and people who have recovered from severe illnesses by simply changing their eating habits. -

Msimang Book Choice Reflections EDITORIAL The upsurge of the mass democtratic movement against the Botha-Malan regime has been reflected in the increase of judicial murders in South Africa. The case of the Sharpville Six is well-known. They were sentenced to death on the 13th Decembe 1985 for the death of a Lekoa town council on the day of the Vaal uprising, during a mass protest against rent increases. The judge admitted there was no direct evidence connecting the Lix with the actual trurder, nevertheless he convicted them under the law of common cause, and refused to find extenuating circumstances. -

Wild Geese and Solidarity: Conjunctural Praxis for a Spirit-Filled Ethics
Wild Geese and Solidarity: Conjunctural Praxis for a Spirit-filled Ethics MARILYNJ. LEGGE Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over announcing your place in the family ofthings. 1 Introduction IN OUR CURRENT condition of postrnodem globalization, capitalism infil trates and commodifies the nooks and crannies of our personal lives and our world. This dislocation of our spatial, social, historical, and intimate connections presents new difficulties for building justice and peace and mending creation. In the absence of credible political alternatives, people's energy and hope for change can weaken and fade our vision of a common good. How can people link across particularities for the sake of justice and community? Mary Oliver's poetic voice moves us to pursue shifting pattems of conjunction. Like wild geese who resist domestica tion, we need to preserve energy in the rhythm of ongoing movement, to participate in a joumey without assured outcomes, to share leadership and rest, and never to forget the most vulnerable. In this harsh and excit ing world, we will conjoin social relations with the mystery of Cod's creation.2 1. Mary Oliver, "Wild Geese," in Dream Work (New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, 1986),14. 2. My hearty thanks to Liz Bounds, Michael Bourgeois, and Alyda Faber for their con structive response to earlier drafts of this essay. 165 166 MARILYN J. LEGGE Beverly Wildung Harrison is a contemporary prophet who considers theological ethics as a material practice. She has mentored many of us near and far in the political project of making Christian theology gen uinely critical enough to escape cultural provincialism, especially by making ethics and radical social change accountable to women's lived world experience, particularly that of those most marginalized. -

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Art and Life in America by Oliver W. Larkin Harvard Art Museums / Fogg Museum | Bush-Reisinger Museum | Arthur M. Sackler Museum. In this allegorical portrait, America is personified as a white marble goddess. Dressed in classical attire and crowned with thirteen stars representing the original thirteen colonies, the figure gives form to associations Americans drew between their democracy and the ancient Greek and Roman republics. Like most nineteenth-century American marble sculptures, America is the product of many hands. Powers, who worked in Florence, modeled the bust in plaster and then commissioned a team of Italian carvers to transform his model into a full-scale work. Nathaniel Hawthorne, who visited Powers’s studio in 1858, captured this division of labor with some irony in his novel The Marble Faun: “The sculptor has but to present these men with a plaster cast . and, in due time, without the necessity of his touching the work, he will see before him the statue that is to make him renowned.” Identification and Creation Object Number 1958.180 People Hiram Powers, American (Woodstock, NY 1805 - 1873 Florence, Italy) Title America Other Titles Former Title: Liberty Classification Sculpture Work Type sculpture Date 1854 Places Creation Place: North America, United States Culture American Persistent Link https://hvrd.art/o/228516 Location Level 2, Room 2100, European and American Art, 17th–19th century, Centuries of Tradition, Changing Times: Art for an Uncertain Age.
