    The Economic Crisis, Ex-Post An Interview with Amity Shlaes The extent to which government should intervene in the market is much more than an academic question. By altering incentives, redistributing wealth, and providig safety nets, the government influences living standards and economic expectations of both businesses and individuals. Since the Great Depression, the precise role that the government should play in regulating the economy and furthering the welfare state has been an issue of contentious debate and intense convictions precisely because it strikes at the heart of what a society’s priorities are and how they should be organized. The current financial crisis has revitalized this debate, recasting it onto a globalized world where different characteristics require a perspective that judiciously incorporates lessons learned from the past with a thorough understanding of the unique features of the present. In this interview, Amity Shlaes achieves this balance, and in so doing, helps us to understand the magnitude of what has happened. Noted author of The Forgotten Man, A New History of the Great Depression, Ms. Shlaes has also written numerous articles and regularly appears on noted programs. This situation was true not only for the “rust belt” sections of the US economy, such as Pittsburgh’s steel industry or Detroit’s automobile industry, but coal and energy industries as well as industrial manufacturing in general were all in decline. This sense of economic malaise and political turmoil was not isolated to the United States. The United Kingdom was experiencing decades of economic decline, as well social disruption due to strikes and violence, and the world learned of economic, political and human rights crises throughout Latin America and Africa. India and China continued to languish in extreme poverty. The economies in East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union were also stagnating and falling behind even the stalling economies of the mature western democracies of France and Germany. Economic malaise and political turmoil were a global phenomenon of the 1970s and early 1980s. Milton Friedman and Rose Friedman sought to explain the reasons for this sad economic reality with special reference to the public policy discussions in the US.

This paper emphasizes some key facts about two kinds of policy that were important during the Great Depression and have since become the focus of criticism by new New Deal critics: (1) regulatory and labor relations legislation, and (2) government spending and taxation. We argue that initiatives in these policy areas probably did not slow economic growth or worsen the unemployment problem from 1933 to 1939, as claimed by a number of economists in academic papers, in the popular press, and elsewhere.

Comey the expectation of privacy Encryption Surveillance & Big Data In a constantly connected world, how much privacy may one reasonably expect? whether knowingly or not, everyone in modern society is affected by this problem, as economic data and daily habits are increasingly tracked and stored in private, commercial and government databases of various kinds. Technological, commercial and security developments appear to make the private sphere a vanishing space. As the expectation of privacy diminishes, so too does the distinction that formed the basis for Western liberal democracy and the idea of limited government.
