The The Vorarlberg of Applied Sciences was founded in 1989 and about 1,200 students are enrolled. The University supports international thinking and acting in all its degree programs.

The (University) provides students with a first-rate learning environment that is characterized by its modern , manageable size and state-of-the-art equipment. All the rooms, including the lecture theatres, seminar rooms, film studio, recording studio, computer labs, multimedia room, conference rooms, offices, library, and cafeteria are all completely networked and a number of rooms are also equipped with projection equipment.

The City The University is situated in (pop. 45,000), the province of Vorarlberg’s largest town and the economic center. The town is welcoming, and in the bustling pedestrian neighborhood in the middle of town there are lots of stores, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Sharing borders with , and , Vorarlberg is Austria’s western-most state and is part of one of the strongest economic regions in the European Union. Vorarlberg, a population of 350,000, boasts a surprising number of mainstream and alternative cultural institutions and events that cater to every taste.

Detailed listings of events can be found in the magazine Kultur and the daily newspaper Vorarlberger Nachrichten. In addition to art and culture, Vorarlberg – with its mountains, lakes and recreational facilities – also provides excellent conditions for different types of sports, such as , , swimming, surfing, golf, tennis, climbing, and .

These famous cities and cultural centers are also within easy reach of Vorarlberg: Zurich (75 miles), (110 miles), Munich (120 miles) or Milan (180 miles).

Health Insurance Need full-insurance coverage in Austria; note: students who are privately insured must make an upfront payment for doctors/hospital service before they are reimbursed by their insur- ance company. Visa regulations require a minimum coverage amount of 30,000 euro for illness, accident or injury.

Housing Paid by student; a shared flat with other colleagues, or a student dormitory in Studentwerk Thuringen.

Transportation Airport The nearest airports are Altenrhein, Switzerland (CH) 24km, Friedrichshafen, Germany (D) 32km, Kloten, Switzerland (CH) 120km, Innsbruck (A) 180km and Munich, Germany (D) 190km. It is also possible to fly via Vienna (A). From there a train can be taken to Dornbirn either via or Feldkirch, with a journey of approximately two (Zurich), four (Munich), and eight hours (Vienna).

Train The main train station in Dornbirn is Dornbirn Hauptbahnhof. www.oebb.at” http://www.vmobil.at.

Taxi Taxis are available in front of the train station and will cost approximately EUR 7.50 to Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, with a journey time of five minutes.

Buses Dornbirn is a small town, all places can easily be reached by foot or by bicycle. However, there is also a very good bus network: Red buses (“Stadt- bus”) provide excellent connections within Dornbirn, whereas yellow buses (“Landbus”) link neighboring towns and villages. Single, daily, weekly or monthly tickets can be purchased. All students are provided with a general timetable for all trains, buses, etc. upon their arrival in Austria. All the bus stops are diagonally opposite of Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences. The journey from the train station to the university takes approximately ten minutes and a single ticket costs about EURO 2. http://stadtbus.dornbirn.at.

Food FH-Restaurant Mensa Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences has a restaurant on the first floor of the main campus that offers lunch for about EURO 4 to 8 (vegetarian meals), and various snacks and beverages throughout the day.

Markets Large supermarkets and grocery stores are usually open from 8:00 / 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 / 7:30 p.m. during weekdays and to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Bakeries open their doors for customers earlier than other shops and the bakery at the main train station has extended opening hours (Mon – Sun from 5:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.). Please be aware that all stores are closed on Sundays, except some gas station shops.

Living Arrangements Moosmahdstrasse The flats in the brand new Student Dormitory are designed especially for Student Dormitory the international guest students of Vorarlberg University of Applied Sci- ences. It provides a home for approximately 30 people for min. five months at a time in the city centre of Dornbirn.

The furnished rooms are bright, modern and friendly. The house has laundry facilities and common rooms in which you can read magazines, spend time with other students or borrow games and household appliances. All flats are connected to the computer network, and the internet connection is fast. The bus takes you directly to the university, but it can also be reached within a 15 minute walk.

Kolpinghaus The Kolpinghaus student dormitory has a limited number of rooms avail- Student Dormitory able. It is located close to the city center and is a 10 minutes walk away from the university. The rooms are about 20 m2 and are furnished (bed, table and chair, wardrobe and private bathroom/WC). Kitchens are shared with other students. Private refrigerators in the rooms can be rented for an additional fee.

Culture Vorarlberg is a modern region with a great variety in cultural events and institutions, both in the field of mainstream as well as of the alternative scene.

The cultural centers are the following three cities: Bregenz, Dornbirn and Feldkirch. Events of all kinds taker place: The Festival of Bregenz (“Bregen- zer Festspiele”) offers spectacular performances on its stage, which is built on the waters of and which is the largest stage of this kind. Parties, concerts, bars, clubs and discos invite people to celebrate. And small theaters, museums, cabaret and exhibitions offer a very interesting cultural program within the region of Vorarlberg.

Dornbirn is the commercial center of Vorarlberg. Every year a number of international congresses and events as well as the popular “Dornbirner Messe”, which is the biggest fair / exhibition in Vorarlberg, take place in this town. You will find many interesting stores and shops as wells as cafes and bars in the pedestrian zone of Dornbirn downtown. The popular shopping-mall “Messepark” is situated in the outskirts of town, approxi- mately ten minutes by bus.
