Xiulu Wang Bridging the Political and the Personal Literary Translation in Contemporary China

his book examines literary translation in contemporary China from two perspec- T tives . The first is related to the social and political dimension of translation, which is concerned with the general context of translation, translation practices, literary norms as well as the structures that support them . The second perspective focuses on the more personal dimension, which is influenced by personalities and dispositions of the individ- uals involved in translation . lthough university studies do not always provide translators with the necessary skills, A many of them continue in their professional capacity, which is understood to be the result of self-directed learning processes . Thus, translators seem to be not only agents of their own education, but also products of translation operations . The data obtained by means of a questionnaire covers three areas: specialisation and the market, qualifications and com- petence as well as affects and attitudes . Also, a general description of translators’ specific self-directed learning strategies is provided . The results reveal that institutional training has virtually no importance in the professional education of translators and that the skills missed most in their everyday activity are those they failed to acquire by means of self-directed learning procedures .

Para ello, ha sido necesario llevar a cabo una primera labor de catalogación y análisis desde varias perspectivas: autores, títulos, len- guas meta, etc . The notion of «homegrown translations» was a new departure for a post-colonial book market dominated for several decades by literary nationalism . In today’s globalised society, translation and interpreting are gaining visibility and rele- vance as a means to foster communication and dialogue in increasingly multicultural and multilingual environments . Practised since time immemorial, both activities have be- come more complex and multifaceted in recent decades, intersecting with many other disciplines . New Trends in Translation Studies is an international series with the main ob- jectives of promoting the scholarly study of translation and interpreting and of function- ing as a forum for the translation and interpreting research community . This series publishes research on subjects related to multimedia translation and in- terpreting, in their various social roles . Esta colección tiene por objetivo dar a conocer aportaciones novedosas en los ámbitos de la traducción y las relaciones interliterarias, tanto en lo que respecta a sus aspectos teóricos y metodológicos más generales como a sus plasmaciones en estudios concretos, tomando siempre como contexto de investigación el ámbito hispánico, en cualquier época histórica .
