Dear Friends,

As I sat to write this month’s letter, I looked back at what I wrote last month before the EU referendum and I finished with this sentence, ‘Let us all respect each other, tolerate each other and work towards a less aggressive society where we can all rejoice in the joy of life and God’s creation.’ Oh dear, has this happened?

Since then we have seen heated political disputes, an upsurge in racist incidents and a variety of major incidents around the world. I pray that by the time this goes to print there aren’t any more. How lovely it would be to wake up each morning to good news stories.

So, in my letter this month, I would like to concentrate on what is good in this world. I have the great pleasure of performing marriage ceremonies and am able to share in the joy of couples on their special day. I see happy, smiling faces of guests dressed in their finery, I see the initial anxiety on the couples’ faces which as the service progresses dissolves into smiles and often tears of joy. In those moments the trials of the outside world do not interfere with the celebration of God’s love given to each of us through Jesus Christ and which the couple are publicly declaring in their marriage. The couples’ happiness radiates and lifts the spirits of all present.

Then there are the Christening services which I take. Oh, how I love babies! As I pick up each child to baptize them with water, I marvel at their perfection, the chubby faces, the cuddly arms and legs and even when they sometimes cry, it is a joy to see new creation and marvel at new life. Again those who share in the service are surrounding the child with love, God’s love. It is a happy time where we are all joined together to wish the child God’s blessing for their future life and we pray that as they grow up they will follow the teachings of Jesus and live happy and fulfilling lives. Again, we all feel uplifted by the love and joy shared.

As I drive around our lanes, past houses with attractive hanging baskets and gardens, I marvel at the variety of colours. I see fields of swaying wheat and barley and hear the birds sing. It makes me forget for a moment some of the trials, tribulations and horrors of the world. So let’s be positive and celebrate God’s marvellous creation and each of us in our own way work in keeping the world as it should be.

Every blessing, Rev Cate

Broadhembury and District Gardening Club

Club members met at Kerswell Priory for a private visit where we marvelled at the new greenhouse and the walled garden which were looking very productive. A further area was devoted to shrubs and flowers with some lovely roses. It was a delightful visit in very peaceful surroundings.

Our next meeting is the Annual Produce and Flower Show and will take place on Wednesday 3rd August at 7.30pm in Hall. Pat Davies

Parish Coffee Morning

Very many thanks to Louise and Ray for hosting the Coffee Morning in July, which was very well attended. It was a shame the weather was not good enough to sit in their pretty garden, but at least it didn’t rain!

We are invited to join Beryl and Fred Worman on Wednesday 24th August at their home, Court Baron, Higher Cheriton, at the usual time of 11am when once again we can be sure of a warm welcome.

All proceeds go to Church funds. We are so grateful to all the kind hosts who offer such warm hospitality. If you’d like to know more about the Coffee Mornings, or would like a lift, please give me a ring on 841828. Marjorie

Clarets’ Corner

It’s August which means the PREMIER LEAGUE kicks off (on the 13th to be exact) and after ’s pathetic performance at the European Championships, I can`t wait to be watching BURNLEY FC again. At the time of writing the temperatures are soaring (and about time too) but a few people have already said to me “Marty, it`s too hot” but just remember that it`s a long winter. CONGRATULATIONS to everybody connected with the village shop - PAYHEMBURY PROVISIONS. I went along to the party at the village hall last month which was well attended, to help celebrate the shop’s fifth anniversary. I still feel proud to have cut the ribbon at the opening! See you around the village and UP THE CLARETS! MARTY

Payhembury Provisions News

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our 5th birthday party. It was lovely to see so many people of all ages enjoying a chat, a laugh and a lavish cream tea with cake. As you may know, Payhembury Provisions has now repaid all the loans, commercial and private, that were needed five years ago when we first started and we hope that with help from all our wonderful volunteers, customers and share-holders the shop will continue to prosper for many years to come.

On October 6th we will be holding our annual members’ meeting. This is traditionally our time for giving grants to village organisations, at the committee's discretion, from the funds raised from our weekly shop raffle and topped up by shop profits. If you are helping to run a club or activity and would like to apply for a grant please write to our chairman, David Curran, at the shop before 19th September. If you are thinking of starting up a new club, or have an idea for something that would benefit the village, please come and talk to us and we'll see if we are able to help.

CUP OF TEA AND BINGO So sorry we had to cancel July’s meeting but there were only going to be such a small number of us that it just wasn’t practical. However, we do hope that all you folk who were poorly are now better and looking forward to coming to our next get-together which will be on

Wednesday 3rd August in the Parish Hall from 2.15pm

We would be grateful if you could let us know if you are not going to be able to join us and also hopefully a few new folk will come along to give us a try! Look forward to seeing a full house…..Louise and Joy

The Village Bell Fair

We had our village Bell Fair on Saturday 9th July to coincide with the Guild of Devonshire Ringers (East branch) striking competition. The aim was to attract teams, involve the village in the event, and raise money for our bell repair fund.

We were very lucky and the weather stayed dry and actually caught us out as most of the stallholders went home sunburnt! It was a lovely relaxing day with ringers and non-ringers talking about the competition whilst enjoying the fun of the fair. The afternoon flew by with ten entries into the striking competition. Even a broken stay (which couldn't be fixed on the day) didn't stop proceedings and some villagers went to the church to watch the teams ring and stayed to hear the results. A won category 1 with 13 faults and Friends of Payhembury won category 2 with 6 faults.

I was very pleased that our own tower was able to enter a Sunday ringers band, the first time this has happened in living memory, and they did our village proud. Many villages no longer have a resident band of ringers which is really very sad. Our tower is doing well and we attracted two more potential ringers as a result of the fair. We could do with a couple more experienced ringers so if anyone has a secret bell-ringing past come and give us a hand.

We raised £1,100 towards our repairs with everyone saying that they thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our total funds raised now stands at £2,152 with a total of £15,000 to raise.

MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED OR CONTRIBUTED TO THE FAIR. WHAT A FANTASTIC RESULT!

Yellingham Farm Diary – July

I buy in beautiful Angus Cross calves at three weeks old from a local dairy farmer and over the next couple of years they graze contentedly at Yellingham Farm. No rush, I just let them come on naturally.

Three of my bullocks were looking stunning and I knew that the time was fast approaching when they needed to be ‘moved’ on. One was to be slaughtered and the meat sold locally, and to my guests who always love taking home some delicious beef. The other two are destined for Exeter market to be sold as ‘stores’.

I can’t say I enjoy taking them to market as after a couple of years you certainly get attached to them. I always take them in the day before to limit the stress of moving them as much as possible. It works just fine as they are extremely well looked after overnight at the market and seem calm when I arrive to see them sold. They looked stunning and their jet black coats were gleaming. They came through the sale ring early and I was as proud as Punch when they fetched an extremely good price. The remaining bullocks are still at home enjoying their days just grazing, chewing their cud and growing on strongly. Time to think about more calves! Janet

Nature Notes Observations from July

Hello there

My highlight of the past month was a visit to Dartmoor, with the Butterfly Society, to hopefully see some rare butterflies. Dartmoor is a good place to see high brown and dark green fritillaries. These are species which I've only seen in books! However, we did see quite a few of both on Dartmoor. In fact, we came across two high browns making love! The photographers amongst us couldn't tear themselves away. What a picture! We didn't see many birds, which was disappointing.

This is a relatively quiet time for birds. They have gone through the breeding season, and are now resting up. The young ones are still about, but in smaller numbers. However, we do still see the greater spotted woodpeckers in the garden, both adult and young birds, feeding on the peanuts. Yesterday, I heard the tell-tale call of the green woodpecker, loud and clear. It's called a ‘yaffle’ in country places. And, there he was, on Nan's lawn, looking for ants, which are his favourite food. Green woodies are beautiful birds, with their green, red and yellow colouring.

So far, 2016 has been a poor year for butterflies. The cool, wet, windy weather does not suit them, and the numbers seen have been low. This includes the commoner pretty ones like peacocks, red admirals and tortoiseshells. Still, there's still time - September is often the best month for them. Churchyard Clean Up!

Payhembury Volunteers Needed

Ottery Help Scheme is a registered charity providing transport services to those living in and its surrounding areas. Due to increased take-up of our services in the Payhembury area we are looking to recruit additional car drivers to help people travel to and from medical appointments.

Often our clients have no other means of travelling to a hospital or doctor’s appointment and our community transport service ensures that isolated and often elderly people receive the care and support they need.

Many of our volunteers tell us that giving time in this way to those in their local community is both rewarding and enjoyable. So, if you drive a car and think you could spare two or three hours every now and then we would love to hear from you. Mileage expenses incurred will be paid at 45p per mile and full training will be provided.

Further details about our charity and other service areas are available on our website at www.otteryhelpscheme.org.uk

We can be contacted at [email protected] or you can phone 01404 813041 between 10am and 4pm for a chat with one of our friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Thank you for your time.

Miss Paulina Mary Trott

It is with sadness we report the passing of Miss Paulina Mary Trott who was born on the 19th of April 1931 when her parents had a small farm in Lower Cheriton. Known as Polly for most of her life, she lived on her own following the death of her Mum and Dad, many years ago. Polly was an animal lover, and her other great love was her garden. Unfortunately she suffered poor health for some years but she fought hard to maintain her beautiful garden. Paulina was cremated at Exeter Crematorium on the 22nd of June 2016 and her ashes scattered in the Garden of Remembrance there.

Hello Friends

Time for me to tell you about some of the happenings for us mice. When the weather is fine we like to go out into the field with our field mouse cousins, you can see them in the picture. We like to run up and down the pieces of wheat and barley and sway on them. We have to be careful we get out of the way before the combines come and harvest or else we would be minced mice! It’s great fun though and we do like going outside to play with our friends in the fields. We tell them about all that goes on in church and they tell us about the other creatures they meet in the fields, some of them do sound rather scary.

We have had a fun month in church and we started with a wedding; Sue and Dave got married on the same day as the Bell Competition. They were lucky to have their wedding over before all the teams of ringers came and rang and rang. It was a lovely day and we liked to see everyone looking so smart and happy. The bells competition started and our poor ears were sore from all the ringing. Poor Grandpa and Grandma mouse hid under a pile of kneelers! Everyone seemed to enjoy it and there were lots of people about to listen and see who the best team was.

We also had a Christening this month for baby Robert. Rev Cate baptized his older sister Rosie a couple of years ago and it was lovely to see the new addition to their family and welcome them into our church family.

I believe we have another wedding coming up soon, so more confetti for us to play with. We love collecting it and making pictures with all the different shapes but it also makes rather nice soft bedding for us. Well, must dash as I can hear Dad calling us for our meal. I wonder what it will be, biscuit crumbs or perhaps something really yummy. See you soon, Parchie and Parchina

Parachute Jump Fundraiser

Four intrepid parents of Payhembury school children will jump out of a plane, 15,000 feet above sea level, at Dunkeswell on 22nd August. (The jump previously planned for 20th June was postponed due to bad weather.) Their mission is to raise funds for a Tentipi for Payhembury Primary School which is a fun piece of outdoor equipment that the children can learn and play in. The jumpers are Kate and Kevin Wooff, Rick Jones and Sue Holmes. (Nicola Hart jumped separately on 24th June. Well done Nicola!) We need your donations! If you would like to contribute, please leave your money in the box behind the counter in the village shop.

Thank you so much!

For further information, please contact Kate Wooff on 841178.

PAYHEMBURY SHOP When the current shop was being planned, some people in the Parish gave unsecured loans to help get it started. Our loan was returned to us recently as the shop is now financially secure and thriving. It is a wonderful Payhembury facility and I would like to pay tribute to all those who have in some way helped it become so successful. When our community pulls together, making use of the huge variety of skills and abilities to be found here, then amazing things are possible. John Somers

Supporting Sally An Interactive Theatre Programme on the onset of dementia

A small but interested and concerned audience attended this Interactive Theatre performance in Payhembury Hall on Saturday 18th June. Dealing with the onset of memory loss in a previously very able, part-time business administrator, Sally Chisholm, the performance ended at a crisis and audience members were asked to advise Sally on how best to proceed with her family relationships and career whilst acknowledging that things in her life would need to change.

Following discussion and a chance to question each of the four people in Sally’s life, and Sally herself, the audience advised and guided her. Her husband Eric was having difficulty facing up to the changes in his wife and the three audiences in Payhembury, Kentisbeare and Cullompton decided that the crucial way forward was for the couple to be honest with one another. The actors then improvised the story extension before a discussion took place about Sally’s case and the issue of dementia more widely.

Sally was played by Anne Dalton and her husband by Martin Paine. Sally’s granddaughter was played by Laura Machin and the check-out operator by Jill Machin. Robert Deane played Sally’s manager. The production was also performed at the Walronds, Cullompton and at the Function Room at the Wyndham Arms, Kentisbeare.

Profits from the tour will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. People concerned with helping those experiencing memory loss spoke after each performance to offer support to those affected by the storyline. Min Rennolds did this at Payhembury. The production was written and directed by John Somers who you can contact at [email protected] or on 01884 277390.

BROADHEMBURY WI MEETINGS

In July, we enjoyed an interesting talk by a volunteer from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, on Roman Britain and the Seaton Down coin hoard of 22,888 nummus, buried in 348, and found in 2016 by a local metal detectorist called Lawrence Egerton.

This month we are meeting on Tuesday 9th August at 7.30pm in Broadhembury Hall when we are lucky to have Peter Newill of Peters Pan Catering visiting us to demonstrate how to make canapes, with members taking part if they wish, and then tasting the delicious food afterwards.

We also meet on Tuesday 30th August from 6.30 to 8.30pm at Julie’s house for a croquet evening, with a bring and share supper, and games for children. Friends and family welcome!

If you would be interested in coming along, please contact Angie Carr on 841862 or Julie Ashcroft on 841189.

Tale Millers Cricket Club

July has been a productive month for the Millers, starting with Party in the Park. A few club members (team and social) plus friends staffed the bar to raise some cash to help with repairs on the club mower. The night was a great success and thanks to Fred and Grant for getting the bar organised and Steve (beers by post) Post(ie) for lending us the gear to make the bar actually look like somewhere you would buy a drink. Well done Kirsty Cann for organising a great event. We'll definitely be there next year, if we’re invited that is!

On to the cricket and at the end of June we had a good win against Fullsys Allstars in almost continuous drizzle. Unfortunately the rain continued through the week and a game against was cancelled due to a very wet wicket. The following game against the Sunsets was good weather (finally) and quite close with the Millers losing 96 all out to the Sunsets 105 for 6. It was an umpiring debut for Jeremy Bradshaw-Smith (thank you) and we were also really pleased to see a recovering John Somers back at Tuck Mill. Another game against Broadhembury Lions ended in a Miller's win and although I wasn't there I've heard that Ed East's ham, egg and chips was astounding.

Plenty more games this season! Hope to see you at the club.
