Countdown to 50: Gulf Breeze historical tidbits When did GB get its first library? By Betty Archer Allen In 1962, a private library owned and operated by the members of Saint Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church and housed in the Soderlind Cottage owned by Mark and Eloise Benson at U.S. Highway 98 and Pfeiffer Street, opened to the public. The next library was the Bookmobile from Pensacola. In mid-1962, the flashy, pop- art sailfish Pensacola Beach sign pointing the way for visi- tors was moved from its origi- nal home atop the Escambia Motors Building on the north- west corner of Gregory and Palafox streets in Pensacola to its new home at the intersection of U.S. 98 and Beach Road in Gulf Breeze. The Santa Rosa Island Authority paid a total of about $11,000 for the sign that was built by Lamar Advertising in the late 1950s. U.S. 98 was widened to four lanes through Gulf Breeze and the new Pensacola Bay Bridge was completed on Aug. 10, 1962, and was officially named the Philip Dane Beall Sr. Memorial Bridge in honor of the late senator who was President of the Florida Senate when he died in 1943.
