The Board also approved 16 new PYC Members and set a New Member Appreciation Reception for October 9th. The Membership Committee is doing a great job.

The Board discussed the Members’ past due accounts as well as increasing the late fees for late payments, a membership survey, and again discussed membership caps. The consensus opinion was not to impose a membership cap, but to raise the initiation fees on Active Memberships from $2,500 to $3,500 and to increase Social and Corporate Memberships from $500 to $1,500 as a way to slow growth at PYC. To raise the initiation fees requires a by-law change by the Membership. These proposed changes would be effective on December 1st, 2018, assuming approval by the Membership.

PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS: • The Board approved, and we have ordered, new patio furniture for the deck. The carpet for the entry, Grill Room, and the hall has also been approved and ordered. • A new sailboat storage facility (of the same color and design as the existing buildings on the East side) is waiting to be permitted and will be under construction soon. • Staff is in the process of putting hard concrete pads down for the 4 RV sites where the pedestals have been installed. The General Manager discussed the need to replace the air conditioning system in ballroom B, as well as other projects that have been deferred because the Club was not in a financial position to incur the cost before now.

FINANCES: Finally, Tim Kane gave a glowing financial report for the month, including an additional $8,737 in New Member initiation fees. Thanks to Tim, we are in good financial shape.

Our Membership Committee, our Finance Committee, our Fleet Captain, and our staff do an outstanding job. Thank you!

As always, we ask our Members to report any person who would like to join our Club to the Membership Committee or to the staff members. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the benefits of joining “The South’s Finest Yacht Club!”

*Congratulations to the Navy Yacht Club, Commodore Bill Clark, and Past Commodore Bob Sutton on the outstanding WAVE Event this past Saturday, September 22, 2018.*

THE COMMODORE’S TOUR OF HOMES – LOVELY “HOMES OF YACHTS”!

Commodore Reeves Yacht Club Wish we were there! in front of the beautiful Newport, Rhode Island Yacht Club PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Carlton Proctor As we ease into Fall and cooler weather (please hurry!), your Board of Directors and staff are hard at work on several projects that will enhance the clubhouse and grounds. THE SHED At the top of the list is the installation of a new all-metal boat storage shed that will be situated a few yards east of the Junior Sailing Center. The 25-by-50 foot building, which will be trucked to the PYC as an unassembled kit, is expected to arrive by mid-October. The building is designed with racks that will hold between 30 and 35 of the Club’s Opti’s. The site also allows for future expansion of another storage shed if it becomes necessary. The shed will have four roll-up doors on the west-facing side for easy removal and storage of boats. The building’s sides and roof will be a light beige color, with white doors and blue trim.

The site was determined to be the best location by GM Warwick, Dockmaster Greg Spitzer and Sailing Director César Travado. The site chosen for the shed will not interfere with the view of the bay or beach area from the Grill Room or deck. The $22,000 cost of the building, assembly, and site preparation will be covered fully by the Club’s Capital Improvement Fund. Pensacola-based H+H Building Group won the contract for installation of the shed and will supervised. The assembly is expected to take a week. THE CARPET As noted last month, the Board has approved a bid of $14,944 by Jones Floor Center for installation of new carpet in the foyer through to the Grill Room. In mid-September, Rear Commodore Nikki Ferry and Club Member Bruce McAlpin performed an on-site examination of the carpet’s condition and reviewed various color samples. They determined that installing high-grade carpet ,with a color-pattern a few shades darker than the existing carpet, will be a better investment and hide stains that inevitably occur through high-trafficked areas of the foyer and Grill Room. In the August report, GM Warwick said that installation of the carpet will take place at night, over a few days, while the Club is closed. The installation is expected to begin sometime in October. Respectfully submitted, Carlton Proctor, Vice Commodore

Satori Foundation Tom Pace, Jr. NEW VENTURE! Two RS Venture Connects arrived at Pensacola Yacht Club Wednesday, Sept 26. They were purchased by the PYC Satori Foundation for use in both the Pensacola Yacht Club’s sailing education program and to begin a Satori Foundation Outreach Program to offer sailing experiences to disabled people and at risk children and families in the NW Florida community. The Venture Connect, in parasailing configuration, has two seats for a para sailor and able instructor/crew or two parasailors. The para-module pops out in a few minutes. The boat can then be sailed by a coach and four students or by a family of four or five. Add water and shake up your life... Contact PYC Sailing Director César Travado for details. Programs are in the planning stages now. Thanks to PYC member Vicki Fletcher for the use of a Fletcher Towing’s flatbed truck that Tom Pace, Talbot Wilson and César Travado used to unload the Ventures from the big semi. Thanks to Carol and Tom Patterson for their donation to Satori Foundation making this purchase possible. SEE FLEET CAPTAIN’S ARTICLE (pages 14-16) for more information about five additional 29er Ventures added to our PYC Fleet!

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET Rear Commodore’s Comments Nicole Ferry I can’t say it any other way other than, what a great September PYC had! We welcomed 16 new members last month! We are now at 645 total members. PYC is the place to be! We want every member to experience as much of PYC that they want. If you have questions about what is happening at PYC, activities or events, feel free to call or email me. Our PYC office is also a great place for information, too. Deon and Jennifer are the sweet women who will most likely answer the phone. They are pretty amazing. They are part of the core team at PYC that not every member sees. You probably have seen our Chef, Artie Gless, but you may not see our Pasty Chef, Sarah or our “second-in-command,” Steven. Sarah is responsible for decorating almost every Bushwacker Pie (made in our kitchen from scratch) and our Key Lime Pie (made locally by Kelly’s Pies).

I hope you attended our Biergarten German Food Fest / Octoberfest event this past September 23rd (my birthday). If you did, you did not go home hungry! Chef Artie planned our menu, but Steven was responsible for preparing local craft beer pairings. The food was like none I’ve had before. I’m on a diet and I had seconds!

I let you know about Steven to inform you that at PYC, we have a team! If one is missing, another will step in and step up. For our new members, our kitchen is not like others. If you have a special menu item that you know ahead of time that you want, let us know. The kitchen can probably fix it for you. If you have special dietary needs, PYC can handle it. If you have a picky eater (I have 3), PYC can make almost anything how you need it. Make sure to try to make a reservation if you think you are coming for dinner.

Thankfully, as the cooler weather moves in, we will get to enjoy the back porch fully. The new furniture has been ordered and will be here as soon as they make it! Again, thank you to Larry and Diane Robbins, PYC members and owners of Pensacola Pools, who again have allowed us to order the furniture at cost. Bye, bye brown furniture! Hello blue and white!

PAGE 10 | JIB SHEET PAGE 11 | JIB SHEET Ship’s Log Dave Hoffman Pensacola Yacht Club’s First Cook Pensacola Yacht Club has the reputation for providing a fine dining experience comparable to the top rated restaurants along the Gulf Coast. In addition to the culinary delights served for special events, PYC Executive Chef Artie Gless and his staff provide our members a varied menu of delicious meals throughout every week. However, this tradition of good food had rather humble beginnings. The accompanying photos are of “Sparks,” the first cook referenced in our PYC archives. Although there were no ice carvings or crystal stemware provided, some of our senior members can still recall the praises Sparks received for his spaghetti and his snapper chowder. Legend has it that Sparks would “acquire” a big red snapper from one of the snapper smacks moored near the downtown clubhouse and cook it up for a tasty weekend dinner. Junior club members served as waiters at these events. Perhaps this month we can grant the title of Executive Chef to Sparks for his contribution to Pensacola Yacht Club lore.

PAGE 13 | JIB SHEET Fleet Captain’s Report Hal Smith OUR MISSION – THE VISION “Yacht” is our middle name… Pensacola Yacht Club. The first three things listed in our mission have been defined for over 100 years and are stated in our By-Laws.

The Pensacola Yacht Club is organized to:

A. Encourage and support safe and responsible seamanship; B. Promote and conduct amateur sporting activities including racing events involving all types and classes of watercraft; and C. Preserve the history and traditions of amateur yachting in the United States and along the coast of the in the Americas.

To be faithful to our MISSION, this year we supported our traditional regattas (Maxine 3, Fiesta of 5 Flags, Junior Olympics, Preemie Cup, Remember 9-11, and more to come), GYA teams, raft ups (for cruisers), water events, and it is also important to note that we expanded our reach with the highly successful hosting of the 2018 Optimist Nationals, the Kona Windsurfing North Americans in a couple of weeks, and the Melges 24 Pre-Winters in November. During our Junior Olympics and the Optimist Nationals this year, we had guests from US Sailing including CEO Jack Gierhart, Technology Officer Mike Waters, plus Paul Cayard who is looking for sites for training and development. They saw what a special place we have and instantly saw what is possible here – the VISION. Pensacola Bay can be the location for some of the most exciting sailboat competitions and development in the US. That started the US Sailing initiative to establish a 29er fleet in Pensacola, providing a 12-month opportunity for sailors across the country to come here and . Training facilities currently exist only in San Francisco and Miami. We are the convenient warm weather center of the US sailing world. Pensacola Bay is a unique and special body of water providing a superior natural resource for sailing and training. Not all projected activity is simply sailboat racing. We already have scheduled a US Sailing “Safety at Sea Course” and a US Sailing - certified “Advanced Race Management Course” for 2019. US Sailing courses for junior instructor levels, powerboat handling, etc., can follow. Many of these activities allow the Satori Foundation to earn regular income which is a requirement for maintaining a 501 (c) (3) corporation. This will positively impact people who are handicapped, underprivileged, otherwise challenged, as well as gifted and talented sailors who can learn and expand their skills fulfilling the PYC MISSION and the Satori Educational Mission.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PYC The path to sailing excellence will be here. The path to general sailing development will be here. US Sailing recognizes that few talented sailors will aspire to Olympic competition. Some will seek a life of sailing around the world, or, more commonly, weekly day-sail around home waters with competence and safety, as well as becoming local competitors in GYA regattas for the pure pleasure of spending time on the water. Looking to the future, GYA moved from the old Flying Scot to the higher tech Viper, with the reflecting the trend to more exciting sailing experiences. Some GYA clubs have already bought 29ers. PYC will be known for offering the best resources for any sailing (and powerboating) experience you seek. This is the VISION. Establishing the 29er fleet is not the completion of the VISION, but rather the beginning. It is a very exciting start. PYC is blessed to have the Pattersons and the members needed with energy and resources to implement the opportunities before us. There is probably a handle that you can grab if you would like to join and have some fun. In addition to obviously thanking the Pattersons for their generosity and engagement in the development of sailing here, please thank César Travado, Tom Pace, Talbot and Virginia Wilson, Betsy Moraski, Sally Smith, James Simkins, and many others whose creative efforts and hard work helped bring us to where we are today. PAGE 14 | JIB SHEET EXCITING NEWS!!! OUR NEW 7-BOAT FLEET Five VENTURE 29ers and Two RS VENTURE CONNECTS The founders of Satori Foundation, Carol and Tom Patterson, committed funds for Satori to purchase five Venture 29ers (including a 5-boat trailers) and two Para-sailboat equipped RS Venture Connects with individual trailers. (See specs and pictures attached.) 29er: 14.5’, 190 lb., 2-person, planing skiff, with spinnaker. Fiberglass hull. Aluminum and composite sectional rig. Capable of exceeding the wind speed both upwind and downwind. The 29ers are part of the US Sailing recommended program to train anyone from a Laser graduate just looking for a fun 2-person boat experience to Olympic-level aspirants. The 29er is the “little brother”to the 49er (an Olympic class boat with all of the same strings). US Sailing sees the 29er as replacing the C420 as the competitive 2-person hiking spinnaker boat. (The 470 was a previous Olympic class boat). US Sailing will send coaches for training, we will host an annual National Championship qualifier (one of two each year), and we expect to get teams from around the country to come here to train. Charter fees will help fund and support the Satori Foundation. RS Venture Connect: 16.3’, 655 lbs., 2-person (can handle 4+ including instructor), with spinnaker. Fiberglass hull. Aluminum mast. Aluminum ballasted retractable keel. Includes para-sailing equipment that is easily set up for normal sailing or para-sailing. The boat is suitable for both junior and adult double-handed training and sailing. The RS Ventures will replace our worn out Flying Scots in our Learn-to-Sail Programs. This is a tame and manageable, yet exciting sailboat that provides training opportunities at all levels including juniors, adults, day-sailors, and racers. These para-sailing equipped boats will provide PYC an opportunity to offer a sailing experience to everyone from handicapped children, to wounded warriors, to serious Para-Olympic candidates. With the para- sailing equipment removed (takes minutes), these boats sail as all normal sailboats. All of this gives César exciting and challenging opportunities to expand our Learn-to-Sail Programs. And, César had experience with the 29ers in Spain, so he is ready and up to the test.

PAGE 15 | JIB SHEET SUCCESSFUL SEPTEMBER EVENTS: Sept. 8 Remember 9-11 Regatta: Eight boats competed with “Atlantic Union II” (Paul and Rachael Gillette) breaking a tie to win the regatta. “Phoenix” (Stephen Nichols) ended in second place after losing the tie-breaker. Thus PYC took the top of the podium with the places separated only by seconds. Congratulations to all! Sept. 22 W.A.V.E.: Sponsored by PYC, NYCP, and FCA, this is a special event honoring our wounded warriors by taking them for a sail around the bay and having lunch when they return. There were 30 veterans and their families (totaling 80) plus 2 service dogs who were treated to a perfect day on the water by 19 volunteer vessels. There was even a marriage proposal made on the deck of “Maxine.” The Color Guard was provided from the Navy and High School ROTC. Boat helpers to assist with safe boarding came from Navy student pilots and Civil Air Patrol Cadets. The guest speaker offering inspiring words was Rear Admiral Kyle J. Cozad. For pictures of the event go to NYCP website. CONTINUING RACE COMMITTEE OPPORTUNITIES We have three regular Pensacola Bay regattas and three special regattas remaining this year. The special regattas include the Kona Windsurfing North Americans with 40+ of the world’s best windsurfers coming in October 19-21, the first annual Melges 24 Pre-Winter Warm-ups in November 17, and the 30 Million Words regatta on December 1. All will be exciting. Contact our Race Committee chairperson, Betsy Moraski: [email protected], and Betsy will welcome you to our team. Let her know if you have a preference. October 20-21, 2018 PENSACOLA, FL (August 15, 2018) What could be more spectacular than a rainbow of fifty or so “KONA” One Boards winding their colorful way around a course on Pensacola Bay in the middle of October? Find out for yourself... Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC) will host an international fleet of amateurs and pros who will launch their KONA North American Championship from the Club’s 22 acre bayfront site. In a typical fall breeze on the bay, they could be reaching speeds up to 25 knots. Racers from all over the world will be setting their sights on Florida for the North Americans and the KONA Worlds the week following in Clearwater, Florida. And it all begins at Pensacola Yacht Club. Registration is open online at konaone.com. Tom Pace Jr., the regatta chairman and a pro windsurfer himself, is stoked. “Like the Optimist Nationals we just held at PYC, our Fleet Captain Hal Smith and I want this to be the best regatta ever for this one design class. On the bay we will offer great racing and on shore we’ll have the kind of fun and fellowship our Club, called the South’s Finest, stakes its reputation on.” Register now for the 2018 KONA North Americans. PAGE 17 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler P/C Larry Bowyer and Ann-Marie chose the perfect weekend for the September raft up. We enjoyed clear skies and a light breeze all weekend. The Pensacola Beach RV Park was the destination, so several boats chose to anchor in Little Sabine while others chose the Quiet Water side of the beach. Many different modes of transportation were represented. We had people arrive by power boats, sail boats, RVs, cars, trucks, motorcycles, and golf carts. We even had pedestrians join us. It was great to see many members enjoying their first raft up. The party started at the Tiki Bar on the beach where everyone enjoyed the sun, sand, water, and refreshingly cold drinks. When Commodore Larry rang the dinner bell, we all made our way to the gathering spot under the park’s community building. The shade and beautifully cool breeze were a welcome change from the beach, and the array of food was amazing. Our PYC kitchen outdid themselves with the ribs and the pulled pork. At least 60 members enjoyed an evening with good friends and good food.

Riding in style to the Pensacola Beach RV Resort Raft up Yum! Ann-Marie & Larry L to R: Ian & Susan McKinnon, Alan McMillan serving up ribs and pulled pork!

The weather remained calm Saturday night and the usual 3 AM anchor drill was omitted for this weekend. Sunday morning about 30 of us returned to the RV park for our usual Sunday brunch. Again, the brunch dishes provided by the participants were plentiful and delicious. Thank you PYC for providing our Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar. This was an amazing raft up. Thank you, Ann-Marie and Larry for all your hard work!

The next raft up is scheduled for October 6 at Pirate’s Cove in conjunction with Point Yacht Club’s Lost Bay Regatta and is always a good time. This is another “drivable” raft up, so come join us boat or no boat. I’m sure our hosts, Janet & Neil Davies and P/C Chip & Joyce MacMillan are planning some fun things for this weekend. See page 19 for more details from Chip and Joyce!

I know it’s too early to think about Christmas, but the Annual Marina Party Raft up is scheduled for December 8. This party takes some serious logistical planning. PAGE 18 | JIB SHEET “More from Chip and Joyce! . . . October Raft Up at Pirates Cove/Lost Bay Regatta October 5-7 As fall weather starts to appear on the Gulf Coast, it’s time for our favorite raft up! Once again PYC has been invited by the Point Yacht Club to travel to Pirates Cove for a great weekend of racing in the Lost Bay Regatta and sharing their facility for our raft-up activities. Janet and Neil Davies, who are co- hosting the event, have offered to open their home on Friday evening for a get together similar to what we enjoyed two years ago. Saturday will be the Lost Bay Regatta sponsored by PtYC followed by a seafood dinner and an evening of dancing to what is almost always a spectacular band. Sunday morning we will have our usual Bloody Mary’s, Mimosas and champagne at the PtYC, so bring a covered dish to share.

The cost of the seafood dinner is $15 per person, and if you didn’t receive the evite directly from PtYC, I’ve included it here. Please respond early directly to them so they have a good head count. http://evite.me/S8jcFMabyd

Also, let us know if you will be joining us at Janet and Neil’s home on Friday night, how many will attend and, of course, please let us know how many will be there on Sunday so we don’t run out of champagne! Contact me at [email protected].

A schedule of activities for the Lost Bay Regatta can be find at the Point’s website at [email protected]. More information will be provided as we get closer.

We hope to see you there! P/C Chip and Joyce MacMillan

It was a GREAT “Day on the Bay” for Wounded American Veterans Saturday, September 22, 2018, when the NYCP Chapter FCA and the PYC Chapter FCA hosted WAVE 2018. The Master of Ceremonies was NYCP Commodore and FCA Chapter Member Bill Clark, who opened the ceremony. PYC Commodore and FCA Chapter Member Jim Reeves welcomed the veterans, their guests and all the volunteers to the event.

The Opening Ceremony included the presentation of the Colors, the singing of the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. Commodore Clark introduced the guest speaker, Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad, the CO of Naval Education and Training Command on board NASP, who gave an inspirational message. Following the conclusion of the opening ceremony, the veterans and their families were escorted to their assigned boats by “Boat Buddies” who were mostly members of the local Civil Air Patrol-Pensacola Cadet Squadron.

With clear skies, a rarity in Pensacola this summer, 19 boats headed out with 32 veterans, their families and three service dogs on board. The boats were a combination of sail and power boats. The veterans were given their choice of which boat to ride on. There were lots of smiles on our guests’ faces, especially on those of the newly engaged couple. Shane Saul, an Army combat wounded veteran, proposed to his girlfriend, Angela, while on the water in the powerboat, “Maxine.” It was a complete surprise to Angela who accepted his proposal. “Maxine’s” skipper, P/C John Matthews, arranged for photos of the special event.

Upon their return to shore, all guests were treated to “Lunch under the Tent,” which was prepared courtesy of American Legion Post 48 (Grill Masters). While the guests had their meal, local Saxophonist Jim Andrews gave a live musical tribute for their enjoyment.

Many “thank yous” were exchanged, ours for their service, and theirs for the amazing opportunity that they had received. All of the supporters and contributors were recognized and thanked for their contributions and support of the WAVE event.

In the words of one of our Veterans, “Thank you for everything y’all do. A lot of us would never get out of the house if it weren’t for folks like y’all. And that’s the honest truth.”

Kathy Champagne, Past Commodore NYCP, President, NYCP FCA Chapter, FCA 4 Star Commodore Recipient

PAGE 21 | JIB SHEET Do You Ride? Bob Kriegel Steve Harp, Bob Kriegel, Dave Norfleet, Jim Oyler, and Johnny Smith had a great after- noon ride Wednesday, October 12th. Steve led the bunch through the back roads of northern Santa Rosa County . The route took Chumuckla Highway north from Pace to Jay, and then west to Century and then back to Cantonment. The end point was Ollies on Nine Mile Road where the Yingling draft was great - cold - and $1.50/mug! It was a good ride!

Our next ride will be to Panama City, for the Autumn Thunderbeach Motorcycle Rally that runs from October 24th - 28th. A group of the SOBs will head over either Friday or Saturday, spend the night there, and return – possibly with a stop at the Outpost in Defuniak Springs for a late lunch (libations?). Let Jim Oyler know if you plan to attend (850- 572-3789). And finally, a big “Wow” to Johnny Smith for his new Harley Davidson RoadGlide motorcycle – water cooled (!), vibration free - almost (!!), with the newest Mil 8 114CI engine!
