Auto Train Amtrak’s Auto Train service operates daily between Lorton, (outside of Washington, D.C.) and the Auto Train terminal off I-4 in Sanford, Florida. This unique service carries passengers and their vehicles on a 16½ hour overnight trip from Northern Virginia to Florida. Passengers ride in Superliner coaches and sleepers, while their vehicles are transported in auto carrier cars at the rear of the train and are delivered to them upon arrival at the Sanford terminal. Amtrak’s capital plan (which is subject to federal funding levels) includes additional capital investments to overhaul Superliner cars and P-42 diesel used on the Auto Train. During FY10, repairs were made to hurricane damaged equipment and the hydraulic loading ramps were replaced. Additionally, the new Sanford terminal waiting room and ticket office was opened in early FY11.

Station Improvements • Miami: Florida DOT has begun construction on the $1.5-billion Miami Intermodal Center, which may open in 2012. It is designed to bring Amtrak, Tri-Rail, Metro Rail, car rentals, and other transportation services together in one location, connected to Miami International Airport by people mover.

• Sanford: Amtrak conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 18, 2010, celebrating the renovation of the Sanford Auto Train station. The new facility is quadruple in size thanks to the $10 million project, which used ARRA stimulus funds.

• Okeechobee: Amtrak has constructed a new shelter station, complete with ADA-compliant platform. Okeechobee is served once a day in each direction by the Silver Star.
