4 MX Astronaut Ambassador SAMANTHA CRISTOFORETTI

5 FUTURA SAMANTHA CRISTOFORETTI MISSION

6 Samantha is the seventh Italian astronaut in space. She is the first femal Italian astronaut in space and the first female European astronaut on board the ISS. Her Mission FUTURA is the eleventh mission of an Italian person in space. Among the hundreds of experiments which Samantha conducts on ISS, 10 are Italian:  five experiments study the effects of the space environment on different aspect of the human body;  two of them analyze the biological effects of microgravity on cells;  one aboard the ISS from 2011 studied bio-contamination by bacteria and fungi present on the Station.

7 Italian Experiments… - Blind and Imagined - move Short bLind plus shrINK (SLINK) - Bone/Muscle check - Drain Brain - Wearable monitoring - Orthostatic Tolerance

- Cell Shape and Expression (Cytospace) - Nanoparticles and Osteoporosis (NATO)

- POP 3D - ISSpresso - Viable ISS (since June 2011)

8 At work… Install rotors on Biolab Studying fruit flies

To study the return of cerebral venous flow (Brain Drain)

EPO script Mission X 2015 Italian Edition Fitness and Nutrition topics addressed in one EPO video recording on ISS (Columbus). The purpose of EPO script is to give a motivational and inspiring message to children participating in the Mission X 2015 project related to “training like an astronaut”.

EPO In-flight call Mission X – Italian closing event 2015 20 minute EPO IFC in Italian with Samantha for Mission X Italian Closing Event at ASI to mark the end of a 9 week “Mission X: Train like an astronaut” programme. Italian children got a chance to pose questions related to nutrition and keeping fit in space. To see the IFC with Sam Click on ASITV.

10 The script introduced the fitness and nutrition field and the activity performed on ISS to be in good shape. The aim is to underline the importance of practicing scientific reasoning and teamwork in hands- on training missions. Samantha explained that it is necessary for an astronaut to be in good health and shape. Each astronaut trains around two hours every day on ISS with many other astronauts from different countries and follow a healthy diet to live and work without health trouble in microgravity aboard the ISS.

48 FUNDACION CIUDAD HORIZONTE 2050

MISSION X – COLOMBIA – 2015

MX is implemented by Foundation CH2050 in collaboration with the Colombian Space Commission

The objective of the Foundation is to reach the population with less opportunities. The project therefore addresses, with preference, public schools, rural areas, distant and of difficult access It is also important to influence the Students, Teachers and Parents through all those learnings that can be associated to the Training and Activities conducted by the Astronauts. In addition to the primary elements of Mission X, Nutrition and Physical Fitness, CH2050 integrates Inter-Relational Skills, as those exercised by the astronauts during their space missions. This approach provides means to influence the participating population in what refers to ethic, civic and social skills, as desired for a new generation. Participating teams currently work on those Social and Ethical Competencies through the implementation of the mentioned skills. A competition is on going on the implementation of these activities.

For this year, 2015, the participation of schools has been influenced by the introduction of modifications in the Education System. This new concept introduces a whole morning + afternoon study journey and the creation of additional mandatory and optional programs. This resulted in a redistribution of the school efforts that can be assigned to complementary activities, as is the case of Mission X.

This dynamics requires a new accommodation process with respect to their participation in Mission X hence our current development of the activities. J. A tribute was made to the “Space Celebrations” conducted by the 25th Public Primary School of Acharnes given the opportunity of the “World Space Week” celebrations.

•A report was submitted to the Greek Ministry of Education and I am now in anticipation/expectation of a face to face interview for the promotion of MX in Greece.

•The Primary School Directors of a great number of Greek Schools were informed about the project in a formal Meeting, as well as the Major of the City of Acharnes, who was also requested to participate as a partner.

•The closing event is scheduled some time in May with a number of 3 Schools conducting it in collaboration. Certificates and small flags will be given to the students participating in the event.

I would like to publicly thank the UK Space Agency, Hannah Garrett and Heather MacRae, who supported us with T-shirts and the “Astronaut training guide”. In addition, many thanks to Nubia for her assistance and support right from the beginning.

• Welcome video completed at EAC Cologne – will be ready for 2016! • Paxi has taken a role in helping get the message across with Tim Educational programme: • Rocket science project - rocket seeds to the ISS, where they will stay for several months. Flown seeds sent to schools. Students plant flown seeds with regular rocket seeds and compare results. • CVD: upload some hardware which will be used to record videos to support classroom teaching. Example of a demo: Lexan box with aluminum ball inside. One ball coloured so that it is visible. The Lexan box will be shaken to demonstrate the theory of gases. • Astro Pi project: Raspberry Pi computers equipped with various sensors uploaded to station and coded by students. First stage only UK students, then the plan is to use them for European-wide educational activities.

129 MX16 Astronaut Ambassadors

• ESA Astronaut from Denmark

• Short mission of 10 days (around September 2015)

• Off MX season but will do some recordings of questions post flight.
